I love watching these videos that visually reinforce what I am learning from you. Your explanations to people are clear and help remind me of nuances I have forgotten to incorporate. In my case, I need reinforcement of those details many times before they become "conditioned" within me. The more precise I am, the better my pup becomes. Thanks!

If you haven’t already you should make a video specifically on negative reinforcement I’ve learned so much from u these last 2 years everyone around me thinks I’m an incredible trainer who has accomplished great things but I know the truth I’m missing the final step and I think that’s what it is

Thank you for your kind words! It sounds like you've already achieved incredible things as a trainer! Your dedication and the impact you've made on those around you are clear indicators of your skill and passion. In my training, I primarily utilize negative reinforcement through leash pressure training. There are various methods to apply it, but this is the most common in my practice. Exciting news - I'm picking up a working line GSD this weekend and will be documenting the entire training process. It would be great to have you follow along. Your support and engagement mean a lot to me, and I believe you'll find some valuable insights in this upcoming journey. Keep up the fantastic work on your end, and let's continue to grow and learn together in this amazing field of dog training!

Just started watching your videos and I'm learning so much! I have a 6 month old GSD and I've been only using "Yes" as a marker and then treat and release, so no continuation marker. For instance, I put her on "place" and say Yes as soon as she has all 4 on, I'll say good girl periodically as she stays, and then say "OK" as her release word. Should I start teaching a continuation marker or would that confuse her?

I guess not really related, but my Tizzy is pretty good at a lot of commands. I should figure out how to get some video. We have come a long way! I have a question about loose leash walking. Although we are better than we used to be, Tizzy still likes to trot ahead of me. Even if I catch up to her pace, she will trot faster to stay ahead of me. There are places that I was struggling with, near the library is one, so I have her sit, then release her, then sit or down and release. It sort of works to slow her down in that area. It's an area with lots of exciting smells, people and sometimes dogs. But for the rest of our walk, well, it's the same thing, she wants to trot ahead of me. What am I not seeing or doing? I see other dogs just walking along with a loose leash (I also see dogs who pull like crazy). I LOVE your videos and Bethany's too! They are SO HELPFUL!! Please give me some exercises to help with our walks. I also have a Klimb platform and a couple Cato boards, if those might help somehow...

Check out this video on loose leash walking: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2jdpaaiZZ6Xhas. When you reach the point where your dog reliably comes back with the use of your negative reinforcement (leash pressure) marker, it's time to introduce a correction for added reliability. Instead of saying "wrong" or any other word you use for negative reinforcement, use your positive punishment marker instead. In my case, that word is "no." After saying "no," give a leash correction to the dog. Following the correction, communicate what you want from the dog, such as "heel," and assist them into the commanded position if necessary, typically using the leash cue/pressure. You can watch this video on corrections for more information: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6jUkKatZd-AqJI. I hope this explanation helps.

what could be the longest period of time a dog could possibly need to learn a command, and what would be an average? how many weeks or months?
@truegrizzlesfan2292
@truegrizzlesfan2292 10 ай бұрын
Hey it all depends. Certain dogs learn faster then others. Practice make perfect. If I have to guess and depends on how many GOOD reps you are doing as well. For example, a dog can learn sit, down , name in few days with over 100+ reps but need to continue to work on the command. A dog been conditional to markers can take a few days too but it really all depends. I am a newbie trainer. I wouldn't worry about how fast your dog can do the commands but are you as the dog trainer giving out great reps for your dog to understand. I truly think good reps is the key. You can do 1k reps and 10 out of 1k reps are really good and rest are bad The dog will take a longer time to understand compared someone who does 100 perfect reps with their dog.. My two cents

@@truegrizzlesfan2292 Hi and thanks for your answer. I am a new trainer too. I have been working with a dog for 2 months and still the dog has not taken the commands. the first month I was practicing with him only the move to make him perform it as I want it. the 2nd month I started naming the commands. So because i feel kind of confused and a bit disappointed as I thought it would be fast. For me to have an estimate from experienced trainers would be encouraging.

Your dog should grasp the basic commands within a month. Try shorter training sessions multiple times a day. don't let the dog get away with Not doing it. Play with your pup in between commands. & Not being rude but you could be boring your dog if you're to serious. Be real upbeat & positive. Act like a little kid if you have to. Always tons of praise when they get it right & Never punish them if they don't - just do it again. Just some ideas for you 🐾🐾

Question...if my dog fails an off-leash come, and I say no (her positive punishment marker) and start walking to catch and correct her, but partway there she decides she's coming and starts running to me, how do I address that? She's four months old.

I’m a little confused. I watch a lot of your videos and I love them but in the everything you need to know about training your dog video I thought you said teach the physical cue before the verbal. Now your saying to use the verbal first. Can you clarify?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 10 ай бұрын
You teach the physical cue first, but when you add the command, the command comes before the physical cue. So you say the command, then pause for a half second to avoid overshadowing, then use the physical cue that guarantees the behavior. Once completed, mark, then reward. 😁👍
@SuperFrangelica
@SuperFrangelica 10 ай бұрын
@@NateSchoemer ok that’s what I’ve been doing but yes I teach the physical cue before the verbal. Also, isn’t it nose, eyes ears? So luring using the nose, physical cue using the eyes and ears using the verbal command. And after a while you don’t need the verbal if your dog is very well trained or conditioned to it yes? I’m a dog trainer as well for about a year now and these are the same methods I’ve been using and they work awesomely but I like to learn from more experienced trainers as well so I’m always open to other trainers perspectives and Training advise. Thank you so much! ❤️🐶❤️

I'm not convinced using Neg Reinf when they break command to put them back into it teaches them not to break command. You're reinforcing the act of going into command, but it never teaches them not to break it in the first place. Yes it's an aversive but it's actually just reinforcement like giving a treat. Unless you're trying to use Neg Punishment to stop the breaking of position (because I just noticed you are using a non-reinforcement verbal). In that case for it to be successful the dog needs to actually want the reward, and most of these dogs don't really care. It would be clearer and quicker to use Pos Punishment. They would actually get a heck of a lot more treats if you just Pos Punished them so they stayed in position. And if you use Pos Punish to teach stability (even during the teaching phase) it means instead of delivering the treat directly to their mouth (which is pretty boring for most dogs), you can make the reward event a huge production with movement and chasing treats and fun stuff and you don't need to be worried about them learning to break position in anticipation of reward. You teach them impulse control, and they have tonnes more fun in the process. Win win. But these are just my thoughts. What do you think?

Yes when I have a dog like that I make them skip atleast a day of food. Then I use their meal time to train with their dog food. Not so great when ppls dogs only eat wet to use for training 😂. But I’m sure you get the idea. I’ve done two days maximum of no food and when you get the yes cue down with the food it runs so smooth and they are ready and excited to train. Then every meal time is bonding and training even if it’s just one command 5 times.

And the asshole he was describing at 6:30 is somebody who shouldn't have a dog. Can't be bothered to learn how a dog's brain works, is taking it personally ("the dog's just spiting me" 🙄). Jesus go get some therapy buddy. Beautiful innocent creatures who give us unconditional love and we get into this mindset like they're supposed to be our robots.
