If you are teaching yourself an A-level but aren't too sure where to start this video should hopefully point you in the right direction.
Last year I taught myself the Ancient History A-level after I missed out on the grades that I wanted. I also started the year retaking an English Literature A-level before dropping this around March time.
I reapplied to UCAS during this time and have since recieved an offer to study at Durham University, and so I will be starting in October!
If you want to see my A-level results day video then click here: • Did I get into Durham ...
If you have any more questions about teaching yourself an A-level that I didn't cover in this video then feel free to leave a comment down below and I'd be happy to help :)

No Sabaku Gaara i booked my exams in a school near my area, but the exam officer told me that they won’t accept any private candidates because of COVID-19. What you can do is try and email the schools near your area about being a private candidate. They tend to have lower prices. I payed the exam centre around November, thats when they can enter students. For my predicted grades, my old teacher helped me from my college. Don’t worry about about references and predicted grades, you can even ask a private tutor to sort that out for you. Login in to UCAS and type in your referee’s email. From there they can help with your reference.

I was (mutually) kicked off Sociology A Level in very early Year 13 last school year, and I was really happy with that at the time, thinking 'I'm not going to University and this course is stupid anyway!'. I hadn't been taught it very well and even for the stuff they taught right, I had been so uninterested in the subject and school in general that I just didn't take anything in. Fast forward six months from leaving school, I realised I actually missed learning, when I was learning something that interested me and wasn't just told to learn, and I wanted to try Uni. So around the same time as you in very late february I bought an online course with my exams booked for 13 days' time. I'll update this comment on how it goes, but I've been following everything in this video despite only finding it today. And I now actually have a passion for sociology, despite only redoing it for a UCAS grade initially, and have really taken everything in in the very short amount of time I've given myself to do it. Finding out what I really need to learn and absolutely surrounding myself with that information has been the key so far. Here's hoping I can translate it into an exam!

Sometimes the best option is detailed learning and finding different methods to teach yourself. If you concentrate a lot of the meaning of things study becomes much easier and if you even go back to basic things and give your self a good foundation on maybe things that you’ve missed it can help you with higher subjects. With self study it’s better to learn a lot more than the material that you’ve been given and I would highly recommend using paper books or trusted sources on the internet but books are always the best option.

Heya! Firstly, thanks for such an honest video. I have been signed on to do an A level in Spanish course at a DLC. However, For the money I paid, i definitely feel like like I'm not really getting much apart from a portal to submit work to be marked and graded, and have posted frequently on their forums after finding many mistakes in their answers ( i also do feel like most of their comments on my work, although high grades, are just criticism ). I plan to start teaching myself 2 more A levels to do a route similar to you to university, which will require an application to UCAS. I don't think i will be handing over much more money to the DLC to do the two other a levels, but will need a tutor for UCAS application and a reference, and wondered about what advice you would be able to give me in being able to source a reputable one. Have you got a checklist that you could recommend me so I don't miss out on anything important to do with things such as the process of applying as an independent learner through an exam centre etc? Sorry for bombarding you with so many questions, It's just difficult to get information online about the specifics, admittedly I'm anxious to go through all the studying and discovering too late I've missed an important step in getting not only my exam space but the grades and the means to get my foot in the door of a uni :) Oh and finally, well done for doing so well with your exams my dude. You are an inspiration and you're just the motivation i needed today :)
@thatonecharlie
@thatonecharlie 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Personally I never actually used the online course i paid for, so it was a total waste of money :( In terms of UCAS you only need a reference, If i were you I would either visit your school (when safe to do so) or send an email to a few of your old teachers asking if they would be willing to be your UCAS referee - If they say yes there is a section on UCAS where you can then put their email down. UCAS will then provide your referee a place in which to submit a reference for you. So either try and get an old teacher or an employer (if you've had one). I guess the main thing in terms of a checklist is that you find a center to take your exams early! Try do it before christmas if you can. Secondly just be aware of the UCAS deadline. From then you just need to keep on track with your studies I guess. Off the top of my head anyway those are the two crucial steps I can remember. But good luck :)

I'm doing my A levels in homeschooling. It's safe to say that my homeschool is absolutely unhelpful, offers only once a week 2 hour classes per subject (I chose Maths, Physics, Chem, English Language), and no worksheets or assignments to do outside of those classes. I have no structure or any tangible resource from the school that I can refer to,, so I'm basically self studying my A levels right now WHILE paying for the homeschool... I tried persuading my mom to let me self study with the support of subscribing to paid online tutor websites (so I can actually get tangible guidance and is cheaper too), but she's not budging. Any advice?

@thatonecharlie 4 жыл бұрын
Ah i'm sorry to hear that! But definitely try and give it a shot yourself if you're really intrested in those subjects! Just make sure they dont include a coursework element! (If they do you'll need to find a center that will mark it early on). Textbooks and wider reading can definitely be a major help and if you can get a tutor definitely do that as I'm sure they'll be able to guide you! But for the most part you should be fine to teach yourself. I definitely suggest allocating time during the day (Monday to Friday at least) where you go somewhere like a library to study as it gets you into a routine! I would look at the subject topics and just split them up evenly to cover - leave yourself enough time for revision at the end though! But definitely make sure you sort out where you can take your exams as early on as you can!! If you need any other help just let me know :)

I think you could certainly study it by yourself but I would strongly advise you to make sure you would have some form of support whilst doing it. It seems strange that your school are forcing you to do subjects you don't enjoy. It may be worth starting to study Psychology, Economics and Maths and then asking your school if you take classes in those subjects after as you will be studying those subjects regardless. Hey dude, I'm completely new to a levels. I finished high school 10 years ago and didn't go to 6th form and have now decided I would like to do a biology a level to help me on the path to become a nutritionist. My question is how do you get UCAS points if you're studying by yourself? Might sound stupid but I have no idea about the a level process. Like how will the university I want to go to know how many points I've got after I've done my exam?
@thatonecharlie
@thatonecharlie 3 жыл бұрын
Okay in short A-level grades correspond to UCAS points e.g. A 'C' grade = 32 UCAS points, a 'B' grade = 40 UCAS points (www.theuniguide.co.uk/advice/ucas-application/new-ucas-tariff-everything-you-need-to-know). So to apply to university you'll need to sign up on UCAS and input the qualifications you have - then on results day the universities you have applied to will be able to see the grade you have recieved. However, I would personally suggest you look into doing a foundation year at university - often they require you have NOT done any A-levels. You then spend a year catching up to speed before undertaking the course you want to study. This might be easier as only 1 A-level might not be enough to get into most universities. Hope this helps

Hi, I just received my GCSE grades and since I want to do medicine in the future I need to take biology at A levels. However I can’t do it at my sixth form due to not meeting requirements. Would you suggest taking it independently as I really need it for medicine? Also will Unis accept independant A levels? (Will I be at a disadvantage because of this?)
@thatonecharlie
@thatonecharlie 3 жыл бұрын
Universities will accept an independent A-level (they won't know if you taught it to yourself) so you won't be disadvantaged. Although, it certainly helps to get taught a subject. However, in a personal statement you could always mention that you are teaching yourself - Universities may actually like this, as it is similar to have you learn at university. But if you want to take medicine and you think you'd be able to put the work in for it, go for it :)

Hey, I'm taking my A Levels by myself! I'm really scared 😂 I'm very bad at concentrating (it has been acknowledged that I probably have undiagnosed ADHD). But I really want to do this. I've been out of the school system for about 5 years so I don’t have that support. Yesterday I was told by someone that I care a lot about that I'm going to fail. Which hurt. A lot. 😂 umm do you have any advice? I have two years to take 3 A Levels and 1 GCSE. Thanks!

@thatonecharlie
@thatonecharlie 3 жыл бұрын
I guess the main thing is be prepared to have self-control and study everyday (or at least 5 days a week like in school or college). Try and get some advice from your old teachers about the best way to go about it. Find a place to take your exams early on - otherwise you'll end up paying late fees or may not even be able to take the exams. And just try and enjoy it :)

You have to contact a school or exam centre to take your exams as an external candidate. Online courses don't actually do anything for you with regards to taking an exam. They will just say that it is your responsibility to sort it out :) but do it early!!

Rose Well I've been doing physics for a few weeks now (OCR A) and I'm on chapter 6. Honestly all i'm using is the Oxford student book and a channel called Physics Online for when i need a dumbed down explanation. Also if I get stuck on calculations, the channel Science Shorts is good for the maths side of physics. So tbh it's really not that bad. As for maths (Edexcel), I'm using the CGP book and a youtube channel called TL Maths (he is absolutely amazing) - but i've only done the basics at the moment like graphs, quadratics, etc but a few other things like modulus and partial fractions - i'm finding this ok so far too. Are you doing into year 11?
