Coach what advice do you have for submissions in self defense scenarios? For example, I’m sure you never want to let go of a choke with a tap. Or are there certain subs that you don’t recommend in the street? A kimura from the guard maybe since you might have to pick between breaking their shoulder vs letting go in a bad position?? I’ve always wondered but have never seen anyone address this..
@Link00TMM4 жыл бұрын
Uh, just a general rule of thumb, you want to keep your back off the ground. That isn’t always the case, but something like a kimura should be used to control with leg over the head, very strong position of control and if they bite your leg you break the shoulder. Should be focusing mainly on staying on top and working to make them give up their back (not you roll off for their back) and go for rnc. If you’re good at armbars from mount and you know for a fact you can break an arm, armbar is also a smart one, spider control from armbar is also strong, as you can hook a leg to make sure they don’t stand up and you can break an arm if you have to. Generally you should be going for control positions and not submissions, looking to either control or disengage, if you have to do something, use your best most trained submission.
@grzegorzp.18274 жыл бұрын
If you are in bad position and it is self-defense scenario then it is justified to just break a limb. Person inside submission may not even realize he/she should surrender and you are justified to not trusting them. Good question is what to do after breaking an arm?
@kempbrown61634 жыл бұрын
For self defense, the best and most important thing is to learn a variety of strong pins, and sufficient throws and takedowns to get them there. One on one a pin is almost always the most noble option, and submissions are always fast and easy from the top. Whatever damage you do to someone in your typical teenage ego fight can be charged to you, either with fines or prison time. If it's a thief, you want them pinned for the police. If it's multiple people, even skilled martial artists are better off walking away. Do as little damage as possible, don't have your life ruined by the courts because of an argument
@grzegorzp.18274 жыл бұрын
Try not to get into a fight. Try to verbally de-escalate situation. Don't close the distance. But if somebody attacks anyway you're in a self-defense scenario and it is okay to do some damage. Usually try to do not life-threatening damage and do not put person on wheelchair and legally you will be fine. Sometimes even deadly force is justified. Look at what Massad Ayoob says on Deadly Force in Self-Defense video.

Coach (or anyone), Can you explain the mechanics of what's happening to the opponent's neck? Is it thumb and radius around throat getting arteries? Is it radius into windpipe? I always thought it was radius and biceps into arteries.
@johnelliott22124 жыл бұрын
if you used this for self defence in the street & you choked them out would the person come round naturally or would you need to do something to bring them round
@prandz4204 жыл бұрын
They would probably just come around fine on their own as long as you didn’t keep choking for ages after they went out Leave them in recovery position if you are worried
@prandz4204 жыл бұрын
People lift their legs up and stuff thinking that it helps get blood to the brain but there is no point. That only works if they have abnormally low blood pressure which isn’t how chokes put people to sleep.
@kempbrown61634 жыл бұрын
There's a misconception that choking people to sleep is safe. It only takes 3-6 seconds for a blood choke to take consciousness. After 30 seconds it is more likely than not to be fatal. Even with only the 6 second choke however, the victim may wake up to a seizure or fatal blood clot. It's rarer, but it does happen

I never learned guillotine in the nineties pulshing upward I learned it pushing the chocking fist towards the bicep and the elbow towards the solar plexus. In other words I learned the street guil was a trachial crush the proper guil was an arterial choke. I’m surprised you don’t do this. I learned make the space between your forearm and bicep as small as possible. Lifting actually makes this harder instead bending down and moving the legs away when standing makes it easier. The principles of coiling the arm to the smallest space possible should still apply.
