Just got out of morning training and I gotta say that this helped me so damn much in getting out of side control. I'm 170lbs and have always struggled getting out of side control especially when rolling with big guys. These guys could not keep me down today! I've never been so confident being under side control! Literally just displayed so many submissions I’ve never seen before and that arm bar with his arm behind his back is sooo nasty! And you’re absolutely right, it’s more effective in an mma or striking situation then a grappling match. Grapplers are all about that control. The striker is handing you that escape.

you do know that your supposed to say 'Oss' in place of everything else, and writing it? thats sacrilege..... its not some kind of sign off. its not a bow or a respect/salute.... i could spend all day saying what it isnt, so ill try my best to explain what it is. its vague purpose is to exist as an aknowledgement in place of actual speach, like because your busy training and breathing you dont want to waste time stopping so you can string a few words together. there is no debate about its specific definition, the short answer is it doesnt have one. i studied a bit of japanese language and culture in college and the way your using this psuedo-word is just downright peculiar. example: your rolling with your buddy, then your coach comes over and gives you some detail to a technique you attempted. rather than stop and breath so you can say you understand, you shoukd just keep rolling and say Oss to acknowledge to your instructor that you are listening.

I completely agree it is better to see side control like a 50/50 or half guard position. The bottom half guard used to be seen as completely inferior, but after some evolution, it is very respected as being offensive. Side control, top and bottom, seems to be underdeveloped in most circles. I love seeing this quality of instruction, especially from bottom side control. Thank you!

Thank you Coach Brian! This move saved me! I was ending in side control all the time and I felt confused how to react. I was trying hip escapes, framing and shrimping away, but most of the time guys were putting pressure on me or transitioning into submissions. So for me side control was like a signal: you can relax now, fight is over. I first saw your video on Wednesday and I was like 'Wow!'. I tried it the same day in the gym. Suddenly I'm not trapped anymore! Suddenly I'm in a much better position, than 'controlling' guy! I'm not afraid of side control anymore. Thanks to you I know exactly what I need to do. Not only escape, but attack. And with details from this video I'm gonna polish this escape till I can get everyone in my gym into a submission!

Yeah, I've been using this exact technique in both my mma sparring and bbj- nogi and bathrobe style, and let me tell you: it is actually unstoppable. the worst that can happen in nogi is if the tricep slips due to sweat or exhaustion. But if they try to go north-south you're in a well enough position to reverse roll and knee-shield, hook your knees into their armpits, etc. The move is very fun to use, and i greatly appriciate your time to teach us, Coach. Subscribed.

Big guys small guys, all sizes and just from this small fine details you have given in the video it helps so much! I have utilized this with higher belts and experience grapplers even when they put me in that position after passing my guard and knee slicing, I still felt I had control an was not worried about escaping or advancing my position.

11:00 - this is a wonderful illustration of what it means for having inside control through the use of the filling the space underneath the armpit. Thinking John Danaher and Priit Mihkelson on how the stress about the battle that takes place to control the inside position of your opponent through the use of wedges and underhooks. The leg positioning for the crucifix in this position serves as a great example and highlights the differentiation of those positions. The lock of the triangle around the far arm taking inside position vs outside position.
