Great primer video on advanced tea farming. I'd like to see a bit deeper of an explanation on genetics. I've found the diamond pattern 50/50 method to be a bit easier in getting the specific genes that are desired. The centralized method you use is great for getting rid of red genes, but due to the imbalance of probability of genes in certain slots, it's harder to find appropriate donor genes and it still doesn't leave you with a perfect clone. I usually prefer planting a larger set of seeds until I find an all green off the rip, and then make adjustments (usually changing H's to Y's or G's) from there to fine tune it's genetics. I also feel that a 4Y/2G clone is a bit more efficient than a 3/3 provided that the farm isn't being run by a zerg who's going to be running the beds 24/7. You get a higher yield and the 20 min you save per run doesn't earn you back the loss of yield for a while.

One thing I always try to remember when gathering clones for a god-clone, is I always remove all fertilizer from the planter! Each seed planted immediately consumes one fertilizer, so I don't want that wasted on a bad gene seed.

I actually use fertiliser to speed up clone runs, once i've got a clone i like enough to use. Also too lazy to keep breeding until god clone, good enough is good enough for who it's for in this case lol

As a newbie tea grower I have watched several videos on tea growing, they were all as clear as mud on the process and assumed rather a large amount of knowledge beforehand. This video was the parting of the clouds, the unveiling of the tea conundrum, I can see clearly now and my tea-growing path is now clear. Thank you so much for this upload, a very entertaining and informative video indeed.

Found you yesterday looking for a tea tutorial and watched your beginners guide. I already knew everything in it but it was such a good video I watched the entire thing, and then went to your channel to look for an advanced guide which wasn't there yet. Then I see this uploaded today like it was meant to be. You are now my father, Tom.

You didn't get into heaters in this video but from all the farming i've done the only reliable layout for heaters is to put low walls for every pair of planters and 1 heater can 100% the temperature for only 2 planters (at all times, you can get further planters to 100% if it's warm outside but will drop when it's cold). The heaters do project heat a little bit but not enough to get the further planters at 100% at all times (particularly in snow or desert at night). The layout i scale is 2x3 where I have 2 sprinklers right in the middle across all 6 planters and then lights for every 4 planters (if only doing a single module there is overlap but you can scale that up to reduce overlaps) and 3 heaters where i have 1 heater for every pair of planters. This layout serves me well and when converting into pure teas leaves little leftovers.

Paddles are a tea farmer’s best friend. They’re the only tools I know of that you can hold and still see the plants’ genetics. That makes paddles useful for culling plants based on genetics. Super soakers can be pay to win for farmers because they allow you to precisely control planter saturation without affecting planter boxes that might be above the one you’re adjusting. Read below for more about multi story farms. My usual farm is a two story two by two. This saves electricity because I can place heaters near the top of the first floor and they will heat the second floor through the floor at night. The caveat with growing on two floors is that if you have to dump water onto the first floor, it will splash evenly onto the second floor as well. I mitigate this issue by keeping water balanced between all boxes. But if I need to break the balance (for instance in the initial cloning phase when I don’t have enough clones for both floors) I will make sure the upper floor is dryer, as I can dump water onto the upper floor without affecting the one under it.

I know this is not an electrical tutorial, but the max output on the batteries does work. Alot of people just forget that electrical branches, switches, splitters, and i think a few other things take 1 power passivley while active. So if you have a medium battery with a max of 50, and then you pass it into 3 electrical branches chained together. You're actually only gonna get a max of 47 out of the battery. A trick you can do if you really need that extra output power. Run the last root combiner into a splitters. Add some more batteries near your medium/large battery, and run the power from your turbine/solar pannels into all the batteries at the same time. Then run the batteries outputs into root combiners and connect it to 1 switch. Then you have a switch with an output of all the batteries combined, -1 for the switch when powered on.

About the sprinklers. They provide indeed 15ml of water, but that's every 5s. Plants need 4-5ml of water every 60s. This leads to some differences if you're like me and want to create an electrical circuit to keep the water always at a wanted level depending on what you're farming. So with a 2x2 and 1 sprinkler in the middle or a 2x5 with 2 sprinklers you'll get 3ml per 5s which leads to 36ml per min so 36ml / 9 = 4ml so perfect for berries and no need for a complex circuit. With more water hungry plants though you won't be able to sustain the water levels over time. For those you'll need a 1x3 providing a whopping 60ml per min per planterbox or a 2x3 with 2 sprinklers (in the middle) for 48ml per min. For 5ml plants the required water amount is 45ml per min per planterbox. If you happen to be a perfectionist you'll need a circuit with a double timer for the proper fractions for your sprinklers, in the case of 2x3 setup (48ml per min) that'll be 225/240s for 5ml plants and 45/60 for 4ml. I hope my ramblings will help someone out there :D

Tom, you can stack large planters on half floors and have them function thus doubling output. I've developed a base design that has good movability for indentured farmers for big clans fully defended. It's tricky to get the bottom floor lights so it's best to build in sections as you have to get the wire tool just right depending on how you build it. Enjoy!

Learned something new - I was wondering why the first/last and 4th genes were always such trouble getting G or Y, now I know. Will start saving clones that have good genes in those slots more often when crossbreeding. I normally run a 2x6 based farm (the long boy) with 4 sprinklers hitting 3 boxes each per level, one pump, and two small batteries with a solar each - one running the pump and one running the lights. I upgrade to a medium if i add a 2nd level, large for 3 or more. Solar panels N works for the first week of the wipe, then point them S, then N again at the 3rd week, S again at the 4th week if you're on a month wipe server for example but that's just min/maxing if you're close to the limit on electricity.

You should definitely make more videos.... kinda new to Rust (even though I've owned it since release) and these are great knowledge and great videos..... one thing I've learned elsewhere though that you got incorrect, solar panel placement, facing north if you're south of the equator of the map, south if you're north.... not always north

The editing and writing on this is your best yet. Entertaining, educational, and the joke about "we're not splitting atoms here..." was so perfect. It's amazing how stressed people get about games. :)

also to add one more thing i experienced while on the south side of the map place the solar panels towards north and when on north side of the map solar panels face south its more efficient, not big of a difference but still doable
