I love watching these because they really like each other so much. I know public opinion and reactions to some of Dr H’s more recent topics, like the Depp/Heard trial has been hard on him and also some people have threatened him. It’s so refreshing to see him really enjoying himself with his friend.

So interesting to hear you bring up Landmark, and I'd love to hear more of your thoughts there. My mom was briefly indoctrinated, developing a surprising (to me) new resent for her parents. Mom brought me to a meeting years ago, but something felt very uncomfortable and "off," so I did not have an interest in returning.

I agree with Humberto on the effects of power and success on big egos, and I see Teal Swan as the beginning stages of something very dangerous. But it's very kind of you to consider the possibility of her bettering herself, and her mission. I admire you for your compassion towards all types of people. It's true that there is always room for change and growth in anyone's life.

I actually read "the completion process" book years ago, and I should say there is barely anything about parents abuse. It is mostly about connecting to your childhood self through steps. The purpose is to heal and integrate (meaning putting the puzzle pieces together). As result of healing different parts of your self, hopefully you feel complete sense of self. I think in the beginning of this video, you implied Teal is claiming she will complete you or something like that. I personally found the book and process really helpful, and still apply it sometimes.

I lived in a communal house with about 12 people. One of the house members got into Landmark and then spread it through the house like a virus. Lanmark and whatever processes they teach were all anyone talked about. Soon we had other Landmark members regularly sleeping in our living room. It was a bit overwhelming!

Just want to chime in about you wondering if you are like teal swan. I am in some of your communities like Reddit and such, and with the trial and everything, as we know, there have been more people criticizing you. I've seen your long-time followers defend you, but always in a very balanced way. Like they don't say, 'Dr. Honda can do no wrong." They say things like, 'Dr. Honda of course has some biases, as we all do, but I think you might have misunderstood what he was saying with xyz." I think you do a good job of evaluating your own faults publicly, that those who follow your content regularly can see you are a work in progress just like the rest of us. You admit your faults readily, even when it makes you uncomfortable. That's a way I see that you differ from someone like teal swan. The fact that you are even asking yourself that question in and of itself is a sign that you are not in the same danger of becoming cult-ish. Also your conversation about possible retreat type things really segues into a question I have been wanting to see covered about 'Marathon couple's therapy" I have been seeing a lot of Gottman therapists offering where it's intensive therapy for 48 hours. I would be thrilled if you talked about that at some point.

Haha to the questions whether Dr H is a guru. I went to a spiritual retreat in a Christian monastery. I'm not very religious but this were 3 days with people but without speaking except around the service, and it was in beautiful mountains. It was lead by a priest and some people did treat him like a demi god. He was mildly annoyed at that, kept trying to make the conversation end in polite ways but people sometimes wanted to tell him eeeeverything. It was quite funny, he really struggled to keep that love thy neighbor attitude but managed. I think some people will see every "public person" a little bit like a guru.

You mentioned that you, like Teal, are sensitive to criticism. To me as an observer you come across as humble and considerate when dealing with critical comments etc. It seems that you are always making an effort to truly and empathetically understand where the other person is coming from. Teal on the other hand comes across as arrogant and grandiose when dealing with criticism. The difference in approach is significant. If I were you, I wouldn't worry too much about being similar to Teal.

Teal reminds me of many people I've interacted with on INFP forums over the past 20 years. When I first started watching her videos - about five years ago - I thought: oh, here's someone who understands me and has a lot of insight. Some of the crucial realizations I had about her were how not special are her ideas and methods, and how literally unbelievable so many parts of her story are. Tying her story into the Satanic Panic was an important part of breaking out of the spell of pity she tries to weave. Whether you set store by the MBTI or not (and I've become somewhat disenchanted with it), there are people who have particularly remarkable idealism, imagination and sensitivity, who are likely to feel misunderstood (like a tiny minority, or indeed like we're from another planet), be gullible, and, alas, feel somewhat self-righteous because "other people don't care about the important things that I do." People like us like to feel like we're unique individuals but often we want so badly to fit in somewhere that we'll respond readily to a leader or savior figure with the right kind of charisma that hits our spot. Teal has that on the surface level: the face, the voice (for me, even her thick Utah accent was familiar and charming). At the turn of the century I was in a particular online forum for the INFP personality type where the moderator got really grandiose and over-controlling, and a bunch of us quit and went to start our own group somewhere else. That was an early lesson for me: even those of us who might think we're the most pacifist, idealistic, enlightened and altruistic people on earth are not immune to self-delusion and corruption into egotism and tyranny. In fact, I think we have to keep special vigilance against this danger. So I see Teal merely as someone like us who has succumbed to that weakness. She's not that special. I appreciated you sharing your memories of MLM recruitment: I had a similar experience (water filters to boot).

The psych researchers I used to work with all (I mean everyone of them) saw the MBTI as a kind of parlor game on parr with astrology. Now the MMPI, that's another kettle, but not so well promoted. Myself, I am liking the Big 5 - OCEAN approach to personality typing, but not so cubby-holed as the MBTI...Good Day!

Oh yeah I agree with what you said. For my part, I thought her ideas were original, well I hadn't heard someone else take the approach she takes. I started wandering where she got that from and thought maybe she was special for having all that knowledge. But then I saw her two hours story interview, and the fact that she wasn't okay and had all those problems made me question how could she have reliable insight on relationships. Then I stumble upon the problematic stuff about her and now I feel lied to.
@MysteryMountain44
@MysteryMountain44 Жыл бұрын
Great comment 🙏 This was exactly my experience with her, it caused a lot of cognitive dissonance at first (when I woke up to this) because I was like 'how can someone who talks about the shadow so much be so uaware of their own shadow'. She is very intelligent, and is also a manipulative narcissist, she is a master 'narrative crafter' and I think you have to be very discerning in order to see through it. The thing I hate the most is that I believed her tales of being misunderstood because she was *adamant* that there was no substance to the claims. What I now know is she thinks like a sociopath, in her mind it's just a 'cultural choice' whether to operate in such a cold way, and therefore she actually thinks she's the good guy (it's almost a kind of postmodern inversion). I don't think many of her followers realise this (they are like I was) and frankly it terrifies me 😞

44:30 it feels to me like there might be a blind spot here to the experience of fem presenting ppl that have survived SA. Watching the doc I immediately understood how unsafe and triggered she might feel hearing that from a stranger in a close setting. There are definitely points in which I would say it was clear their environment discouraged questioning Teal as an authority but I wouldn’t characterize that moment as one of them.
@StephSunshineArtistry
@StephSunshineArtistry 2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Aside from the SA aspect, I also remember when I was selling real estate, guys who wanted to date me would pretend they were looking for a house because they thought it was the only way to talk to me. They wasted so much of my time and effort that I put into trying to help them with something they never wanted help with. It's so disrespectful of your work as a professional. I eventually had to buy myself a fake engagement ring to help ward some of that off.
@srm0520
@srm0520 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I didn’t think her response to this was egregious. As a woman it’s exhausting how frequently you have to “be nice” to men when they express their attraction to you out of the clear clue sky when absolutely nothing in your interaction w them prior to that was in any way flirtatious or misleading. Somehow it becomes our job to coddle their ego in that moment regardless of whether we feel safe with them or not. I saw her upset afterward as related to that exhaustion and feeling like she was being reduced to an object- which is the story of so many of our lives 🙄
@wall.daisies2952
@wall.daisies2952 2 жыл бұрын
As a woman who has been SA, I totally agree and see how she reacted the way she did.. in Dr Hondas defense I see where he’s coming from as a professional as well. Therapists are trained to handle transference and counter transference, and attraction to the therapist is more common than it may seem. So although she has a right to feel the way she does, if you’re trying to help someone from a standpoint of someone who knows how to help anyone, she would have been able to see the transference and deal with it in a more differentiated way. But I understand she still has a wound there so maybe that’s just not a good area for her to be helping people.
@StephSunshineArtistry
@StephSunshineArtistry 2 жыл бұрын
@@wall.daisies2952 I see what you're saying. I think the crucial point is that she didn't really react too badly in front of the guy. She had her moment when she was away from him, then got it together and went back in to try to help him. The only thing I think could be a problem is the fact that the film crew recorded it and now that guy could see her reaction. On the other hand, why do we feel we need to coddle men who make women feel disrespected and objectified? Why do we need to hide how their actions make us feel? So I can see both sides of it.

Dear Dr. Honda, you are nothing like Teal Swan in all the ways that matter most to me. Her level of narcissism is a huge turn off to me. Where as you’re always so so careful to note that you don’t have the final word or the only path to healing. As for being a fan, yes, I am, but I don’t personally have that idol worship thing going on. Maybe it’s from life in NYC and seeing stars walking the streets but it’s just that people are people (unless you’re Teal and part alien) and some have great talents in certain areas. I can admire it, and I do, but I don’t worship it.

As far as the isolation of followers I got the impression that many of the people that became convinced they had been abused by their parents no longer had any contact with family . We did the kind of parts work you are describing in the treatment center I went to (and on group days when we were doing it we always had a longer group to really check in afterwards, and we always had multiple therapists in the room), and it was incredibly powerful. We did it around family, or internal feelings, or differnt maladaptive coping, and various other things, and honestly it was the elements like this that I believe really made a bulk of what made this inpatient facility so different. Both as the person doing the exercise and at times one of the people cast in a role, it gave me so much more to realize and talk about with my therapist. My trauma therapist would so alot of experiential things, like after an EMDR set he would ask me what my body wanted to do, and depending on the situation he would give me a way to do that, or, he woukd try to encourage me to do the opposite. Early on I always wanted to 'get small', but by the end I was able to connect to other feelings and 'push' literally and metaphorically against the stories I had come to accept about who I was etc. So those were just two things that were part of treatment, at a MENTAL HEALTH facility, so while I know that alot of these elements can be incredibly healing, and I'm sure that Teal Swan has helped many people through some of these things, I'm just irked by the statement that this kind of thig doesn't happend in the mental health field.

Around the 30 min mark: Could it be that TS is suffering from something I suffered from at work, that need for the uniqueness that is me and this has to be expressed in this setting in order to give me (this case her) the sense of being vitally important to the task/goal at hand, that I was integral to the space/team. So often in my work life I've ended up feeling like a widget and then would go on to decide that if this is a job anyone could do, that there was nothing about me that was especially required so then (when the opportunity came up) I would leave that job so "anybody" could do that job. I suppose it's a certain combination of vanity, sense of self importance, possibly touched with self-confidence with a good dose of grandiosity, that "star of your own show" phenomena that likely is pretty common these days of selfies and bedroom youtubers. I bet TS could not comfortably walk the streets anonymously just be part of the crowd in any country where there are tall long haired people who all dressed at her level of quality. She likely has a big need to manifest her uniqueness and have that accepted by admirers. Humble is not in the vocabulary in her head. All this is JMO. It would be great to see a video from Dr. H: 20 minutes of wisdom for TS.

I might be wrong obviously because I can't possibly know what Teal's true intentions are, however, it felt to me that when the non-negotiables document was written up, she carefully skirted around what would be illegal and/or what would be considered a cult according the to the BITE model of assessing cults. Each rule had control attached to it but carefully left room for her to defend herself and say, "I never said you can't have a baby, I never said you can't speak to your family/friends because they don't agree with me." It seemed like she carefully looked at why more well-known and confirmed cults were called cults and carefully walked the line between "cult" and "movement"

It’s become obvious to me that I’ve become a better person since I started listening to Dr. H. It occurs to me that gurus never promise to help people become better at being people. It’s always something about self realization which seems not rooted in the reality of every day life. Self realization feels like a pie in the sky. So I think Dr. H is in the clear to never be confused with a cult leader guru person - as long as he keeps helping people become better people and doesn’t suddenly start rambling about concepts like wokeness and self realization.

No, you are not like Teal Swan. I've been listening to you for a while and I have not heard one grandiose comment. You go out of your way to be diplomatic and empathic towards whomever you are reviewing. I've checked out Teal because I have clients who have mentioned her and right from the start I had uneasy feelings about her. She is clearly an unusual person and I think she means well, but she also seems to be delusional about her specialness. I saw the documentary and the whole thing made me feel uncomfortable. I kept thinking that she is nuts for doing what she was doing without the necessary training. It struck me as dangerous and egotistical. Anyway, I don't think you're like Teal Swan!

Ha, interesting idea about doing a retreat. I think the one thing I would wonder about with that is what would that make me in relationship to you? Would I be your client then? Not really I guess. You're always really clear about interaction with you not being a therapeutic relationship. But how would you formulate that with something as hands on as a retreat? Would it be you doing therapy? Coaching? Teaching? Just a podcast host - fan interaction? But if I'm not your client, what happens when I feel like something bad happened in the retreat? There isn't a structure for that. There are no therapist podcaster retreat ethical codes. It's a whole new territory. Not saying you shouldn't do it, but I do think it's an interesting thing to think about with you being in this unique position of being a therapist-helper-podcast person and those two roles getting somewhat blurred maybe.

So what do you think about her work in shadow work?, l have seen a lot of people that dose this and saying she dose it wrong and it's dangerous. It's like opening a wound but not helping to heal it.

When we talk about "re-experiencing," and when we assume these are real reversions back to an earlier state, there is no way science can prove this is true emotional "time travel" as opposed to a kind of imaginative / suggestive hypnosis -- not so different from the Utah psych professor who turned Teal Swan onto "recovered memories." I think such exercises are useful, because they help us experience immediate emotions, but I would hesitate to claim they are true returns to past experiences. In most cases, I think they are vivid recollections, but some amount of imagination will always be there. So I'm ok with the term "re-experiencing," but I would be careful to use the term with heavy quotes. Otherwise even mainstream psychology starts to enter the world of fantasy and magic.

Thank you for doing this Dr Honda. I am a nurse, and health manager and want to tell you that I have been following you since you started your 90 day fiancé days, don’t think I’ve missed any! I also want to share that I have learned SO much, which I have taken some of this and trying to help myself-and understand those I manage as well. I have asked so many colleagues to watch, your work is so powerful. I have watched a tiny bit of Teal Swans sessions on KZbin and I’m glad I watched your review. Bit disappointed in myself that I didn’t look into her further myself and took her words at face value. She has interesting things to say and an appealing approach. I will continue to watch both of you, but will be more intentional about critical thought before I absorb what I’m hearing of hers. 🙏

Here I was peacefully listening to Dr. Honda and Humberto's discussion turn the religious variations curb while playing on my phone, then suddenly, I hear about Philippine Catholicism. Damn, bro. I know you're well-read and educated, but you got that impression of PH Catholicism on point. Kudos! Also, it feels nice to know that the primary PH religious is seen and understood for what it is. 👏👏👏

I think it’s really important to also clock the broken SYSTEMS that drive this too. You can’t (especially anymore!) assume folks have access to mainstream mental healthcare in the US at all, let alone resonant successful therapy. Especially true for women and non-binary folks, and historically marginalized populations. Sooooo… we’re going to have to address some of these systemic gaps that drive a lot of folks to pursue alternative unregulated healing.

Personly, I don`t think it is a problem if you see a therapy-roleplay as acting or channeling another person. It is just a matter of taste or world-view. But it is a problem to say that only one person can do this. A lot of people can do both channeling and roleplay and all of this. The problem is when she say that this is limited to just her. I feel more free when I include the spirit dimention in to my life. It doesn`t have to be a big deal. But I haven`t seen the dokumentary. I only enjoy you two talking. Funny ending on this video :)

I don't know, I have watched a lot of Teal Swan and I don't get the impression that she is saying she's the "only" person that can help. I feel like that is a bit of a straw man. She has a therapist, and has said that all spiritual leaders should have a therapist. She recommends certain types of therapy in some of her videos, so there's that. Someone saying they are uniquely qualifed doesn't mean that they are the only person that is qualified. It just means their qualifications are different. If there is a video where she's saying she's the only one that can help, I've never seen it. I've also been to her workshops, and I'm sure you've watched them - but I don't think anyone is trying to implant memories and convince you that you were abused. Most of our psychological patters probably do come from our primary relationships as children. I mean, that just makes sense. And we live in a society that is very emotionally immature. In my opinion she's just pointing out something that's there. In general most poeple do not know how to address themselves or others emotionally. In her completion process book she even talks about that memories that come up when you're doing meditation around triggers aren't neccesarily "real" memories - but can be metaphors that your mind is using to show you how you were feeling (almost like dreams can do). So in her work she acknowledges that. I've never heard her tell someone, this is real even if you don't think it is. I feel like these comparisons to landmark etc are you guys placing an overlay of something that's familiar to you over something you're trying to figure out. I do agree that she can be a little arrogant and over confident and come across bad when she's defensive about something - but I don't think she thinks she's the only person on earth who can help. I also think that saying she's run-of-the-mill, though I get where you are coming from, is inaccurate. She does have millions of followers, and that's not an accident. Most spiritual gurus are focused on making you feel good. Teal focuses on finding the truth of how you feel, which sometimes does not feel good. That's what she does that's different. And for someone who hasn't had their emotions validated and is stuck in a rut of toxic positivity, her approach does make a difference. It's not groundbreaking - but it is different from what most people in her field are doing. Eckhart Tolle for example just teaches you to disassociate from everything. Teal kind of does the opposite.

I have come to a similar impression of Teal and her content. It helps me a lot and there is nothing dangerous for me in her content I consumed. I think any content from any expert/guru can potentially be dangerous if it is perceived through the lens of a dysfunctional belief-system held by a person who experienced powerlessness in their lives.

I approach the family system thing the same way Dr Honda does (family constellation). I wonder, listening to him, why and when it becomes a problem to say "it was the spirit of your relative" instead of looking at it more as an experience/act? It does kind of triggers me, but then I also remember that people just have different understandings/belief. The "I am the only one who can do that" is an obvious problem thought. That "tool" is indeed quite commun.
