Didn't you teach us about values and how we sometimes need to choose between a lose lose? How is choosing comfort because it is a bigger value at the moment bad? Why should we always strive for expansion and tolerate pain we don't believe is worth it? If we believed the pain to be worth it, wouldn't we naturally choose to tolerate it? So the problem is not whether someone wants to tolerate the pain but instead the problem is that the person doesn't see how the pain is worth it.
@strawberrychocolate93833 ай бұрын
Also didn't you teach us that pain is a message we want to get away from something (towards something else)? Wouldn't choosing pain be the opposite of expansion? I'm not saying that we should avoid pain, but choosing it doesn't seem logical.

@@strawberrychocolate9383 u bring up such good points strawberrychoolate9383 that I wanted to chime in. Choosing the pain it's about accepting it and understanding why you feel what you feel. By taking this loving approach we can grow from the pain which allows one to gain strength and wisdom while still fully embracing the pain for what it is. Instead of being shackled by pain you now get to be friends with it and go out on fun dates. It's about living life with pain as a dance partner in every sense of the experience. Emotions are friends, not food. Keep being u, ur thought-patterns are on the right track and i'd keep pursuing it. I'll be here if u need anything, from yo-mama

Good advice. I think what can be difficult is to see the "politicization" of a lot of success, such that connections and "confidence" increase flexibility across a person's life in an inappropriate way. We see that with the former president. There is a great book about it, called Antifragile, by Nassim Taleb. I also believe people fear attrition, which whatever you may say about Elizabeth's Holmes lies at Theranos, were motivated by an initial, genuine desire for success...There is also the issue of what do you say to the Christopher Reeves and Michael J. Foxes of the world, who were pidgeon-holed? How to have a sense of agency in the face of absurdity? One other great book I'd recommend is the Infinite Game, by Simon Sinek.

@@strawberrychocolate9383 Comfort in the moment may cause bigger pain in the future, so it's not really about choosing comfort over pain, but choosing one type of pain vs another and being conscious about that choice. Also, the video was about defining the success you would want to achieve, looking for all the downsides of choosing that particular type of success and being willing to accept the pain along the way. Obviously, we can't just choose pain in every area of life and expect ourselves to be happy and thriving, there has to be a balance. We have to take the pain in one area of life to make a leap in another area, and we have to feel secure in one area, to compensate for the insecurity of another area. The life that's most fulfilling to us personally, will be full of difficult choices we had to make on the way. Difficult, not because suffering in itself has a higher value than comfort, but because we have make decisions that seem worth the certain pain that has to be endured for the sake of our personal goal (just as you said). If you choose comfort as as the bigger value, then you have to rethink your definition of success. Maybe you're already successful enough for your personal preference? Or maybe you just want to give yourself some time to rest and rejuvenate before tackling the bigger problem, because you also value your health or because you want to build a better foundation for that future success? It's all just a matter of perspective and knowing your own values and limitations. I don't see any contraction in her videos so far, but maybe I'm blind... Thank you for writing out all your concerns, it's very interesting to see different perspectives and interpretations regarding the same content. I love comment sections, there's always so much to learn from other people beside the content creator. Please let me know if there's any contradiction in my comment or anything I can clarify. Your questions helped me sort out my own mind a bit, I appreciate them. :)

Trauma plays a major role here. Yes we have to choose which pain we want to endure but if trauma lowers your tolerance for facing pain, or worse, you do face it and then burn out or suffer a health crisis as a result, then success is going to be that much harder. The world today really hobbles people by overloading them with achievement expectations and interpersonal dysfunction. And yet survival depends on dealing with pain that no one should reasonably have to endure.

I constantly monitor what I can handle when trying to reach goals. I am little triggered by the concept behind this video bc it reminds me of self doubt in not being able to take on more discomfort to reach goals. Maybe becoming intimate with yourself and knowing your boundaries is more valuable. It's important to protect our health rather than take a plunge more times than we can handle. Then again this video has made question msyelf where I was already questioning myself. Ouch. But she days say at the end there is no single right answer. Maybe the following video will delve deeper into getting to know our limits and working with them rather then against them

Great comment. That's why more and better is not necessarily what we should strive for, and the pain is a signal to sometimes consider if our goals are really our best goals. Americans don't see their cultural bios that they sell to the world, always claiming that if you are enough with what you have then you are weak or pathetic. Or maybe you are aware and can accept reality? To feel satisfaction with life, it would be best to feel pain but accept it, consciously choose it and in an amount that seems to pay off. That's why we choose jobs, people, hobbies that correspond to our strengths and preferences and not their opposites.

This is a great topic. In Counselling studies, we used a decisional balance grid/ process to examine different choices/circumstances and change. Teal highlights something here that I find very true: every choice involves some type of sacrifice, and there is no utopian situation. We left the city because we wanted a quiet life in nature and a lower cost of living, but we don't have many restaurants or events that happen. And owning a home is an achievement of sorts, but comes with repair responsibilities and taxes etc., though it means not having to deal with a landlord. I think it's helpful to stop looking for a 'perfect' situation, and look at what choices/options allow one to live optimally within one's values and means.

It depends on how you define "success." And that, depends on what sort of "values" you have for yourself. A success for one is getting to higher position of a white collar job, and for another it's to open up their own horse-farm. So you need to see exactly what makes you feel good, what your values are, and then actually accepting the contrast is a lot less difficult. You will accept the "pain." (Just like how an athlete accepts the "pain" of training and an artists accepts the "pain" of drawing/painting/experimenting every single day.)

It’s not that we are avoiding all pain or contrast. We are avoiding EXTREME pain and contrast. We were NOT originally designed to endure this level of contrast; that is a large part of why we suffer mental illness when we do. Extreme contrast at the level our society cranks it out, is ARTIFICIAL.

Unfortunately the desire or intention of/for “success” requires sacrifices as well as finding the balance or juggling between interests and intentions. However… Having personally experienced a different nature of stress… a breakdown which grievously affects focus and daily responsibilities. When stress becomes an illness (CFS) However… in my case… I have chosen the pain, because I have seen a future that disturbs me… and I want to influence its outcome.

No pain , no gain. Feel it. Go through it. Get stronger. Tears and sweat and loss are all part of the process. Just being born is call labor. (Don’t use my line Teal) but yes, it’s hard work getting to where you want to get to. And then there is the pain of sacrificing the pleasure of today for the goal of tomorrow. That’s the facts of life.

Did the same thing, no support and approval, and we're on the way. My father sent me to meet the man whose signature appears in our money. I turned it down. On the journey to the first 100k and excited. Very lovely strategies

13:38 True, and again, there are infinitely many creative ways of navigating through the different obstacles. I personally would have rather been alone or done the long-distance relationship with frequent trips or actually focused on finding a compatible partner without getting into a friends with benefits situation.

remember, life is not fair: many ppl reach whatever/whoever they want because they have what it takes at the 'right' time without even being that conscious of it. ( Teal made a video titled 'life is unfair' btw'). Also pls consider that often times reaching the really high levels of society means 'cheating' in some way, although not in the way most ppl think. As someone who lives with and is related to many different layers of society, this is my perspective. dont be too hard but not optimistic on urself either.

Yes!! Just because someone has monetary success does not mean they have developed and matured the other areas of their life. There are trade offs; everyone is human. It wasn't until I went through a (difficult, unwanted) divorce and it was aligned with the drama in a celebrity's divorce, that I realized: the rich and famous are no different. I think it is important that this celebrity was one that I had *zero* interest in. We have almost nothing in common at all, I do not find this person relatable nor do I idolize them, and I am pretty sure that anything this celebrity has to say isn't going to be very relevant to me. And yet, because of what I was experiencing, the algorithm kept pushing this celebrity's news updates to me. Eventually I started reading about what was happening in their situation. I began to see the same mistakes that I had made in my marriage, this person made. I saw the same levels of pressure, intimidation, manipulation, and legal loopholes that were used in my situation. I had felt like no one in the world could possibly understand my situation. But here was this celebrity, with the same exact circumstances unfolding in the tabloids. The "rich and famous" suffer the same interpersonal challenges that we ALL deal with, and the same inevitable consequences of choosing one value over another. They also have intergenerational trauma and wild family members. They might not have to worry about money in the same way, but they ARE still worrying! The first of the Four Noble Truths in Buddhism gets straight to the core of our shared sense of humanity; life is temporary, challenging, and transformational, for each and every of us. 😊

It is difficult to chose pain to become successful if you don't even know if the succes is worth the pain. People now are not healed enough to have the ability to risk getting hurt for success they never had before.

I chose a lot of pain to get mentally well and become mentally independent from my trauma. I dedicated all of my young life to overcome ptsd and my fears, my bad beliefs about myself and after 10 years of struggling so much has changed for the better. I never thought I could study, but I thought about what was the sweet spot of the careers that I wanted and could manage to do while still having some room to navigate my mental health and pushed myself through an education. Now I am stable enough to have a job that I absolutely love. I had a real violent pattern with men and I overcame that completely, celebrating my 5th anniversary with my man now. But I sacrificed a lot aswell and sometimes I am really sad about it. Because I changed, all of my family doesn’t speak to me anymore, which is heartbreaking. Sometimes I wish myself back to prior times but then I remember that the pain of losing my family is the direct result of healing. Also sometimes I am sad of not feeling as alive as when I was hunting the next adrenaline rush, but that also is a okay pain to live with
