My biggest takeaway was how the team can be disrupted when a new person joins- whether it's a new member or a new leader.

Great video outlining all the team development stages! I have been on a number of project teams and have experienced all these development stages. One of those teams actually did get to the Performing stage and it was fabulous. We really performed as a unit and you could count on everyone. One of the other teams I was part of never made it out of Storming stage and it was terrible...couldn't wait for that project to finish. The project manager didn't call people out on their hidden agendas.

Oh yes I have experienced a couple, but this one happened about 2 years ago. So it started when I was informally promoted by my manager to take on more responsibilities and I need to keep everyone in line as I am the experienced one and also as I am the one with loads of managerial experience regarding project and teams and insuring quality and standards are met. Basically this one team consisting of two guys was being hard up. Took critical critique so personally so that I had to call in my executive manager. Long story short the bar was set straight by myself, but yet again this whole issue persisted because they weren't notified which is mistake number one. Not long after they left the company as they could not keep up with the standards set out, even though everyone else pushed through and learned a lot from me and grew a lot. I guess that was just another wat of eliminating the weak links hey.

Hi, during a project and you're in the storming phase, do you call them out in front of the whole team? Here's an example: During a project charter meeting I've been stopped and asked if the charter was necessary. That they feel it's a waste of time. I've explained the goal of it, and essentially, this is our process to ensure we're all rowing in the same boat, and have goals and a vision of where we all need to end up. After several bouts of interruption and frustrated body language from this person, we ended the meeting successfully but at a weird vibe in the room. It also seemed really odd when this person was in the meeting and others seemed to lean back and not contribute. Eventually, I talked to this person 1x1 and seemed to go ok, but it still gave a weird vibe throughout the project. I was sooooo happy when it was over!

Yes…you call them out in front of the team in a professional and respectful manner. Sound like that is exactly what you did. Good Job!

Tuckman's is a nice model (aside from the overblown 'storming' phase) but it fails to deal with the individuals who comprise the 'team' or group. The model seeks to profile the group qua group, but the manager/leader/chairman needs to be aware of the process that each member keeps cycling through while they find their place in the group. Pellerin's 4-D system is of some practical help in this. The model also seems more like one of Bion's T group's life rather than an outcome focused business group where 'storming' can be a brief period of mutual adjustment in respect of an agenda and outcomes sought. Most project teams in project industries come together like Legos as everyone knows their role, expectations and contribution.

Hello Adriana Girdler! I like your video. Would a question be possible? If so, I would like to know if it is important/interesting that the group/team is aware of the phase in which it is? Should the coach/facilitator inform the group the phase in which he (the group) is? Thank you very much in advance, Geremias Cilião de Araujo Junior (Campo Mourão/Paraná/Brazil)
@AdrianaGirdler

First teach everyone the stages and what to look for and then ask the group what stage does everyone think they are in. As time progresses or things come up, bring up the stages and us it as a reflection exercise. Hope this helps.
