Some follow-up notes: - A section on MVM and a section on self-expression in cosmetics were both scrapped as they broke the flow of the video. I would have liked to touch upon these, but I couldn't find a place for them. Sorry to disappoint. - I considered a section discussing the TF2 economy, but I figured it would be really dry. Hunting for unusuals, trading, etc. Most veteran players have done it before and it bores me to talk about it. - I may have said that I have been playing since the Orange Box, but that doesn't mean I've been playing regularly. I played a bit in 2007, then again in 2009, then again when it went free to play, and then I took a long break from it until Jungle Inferno. So I am by no means familiar with EVERYTHING this game went through! - I dislike higher viewmodel FOVs on most guns (with the exceptions of the Direct-Hit and Demo's grenade launchers). I know that's going to make a few people upset but idc lol it's how I like to play. This is more of a personal thing, but I know I'll be getting countless comments about it anyway! Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoyed!

I can understand the need to take a break from the game. I was sold on TF2 from the moment it was announced making a day-one purchase mandatory. I've played the game for years but sometimes you just need to give the game a break. I'm sure there are people that have played all the way through because as you said in the video, there are still moments worth playing for. Games like Overwatch have waxed and waned while TF2 has been around, I wonder sometimes if Valve ever expected Team Fortress 2 to have the legs that it has. I don't think anyone that coded the game could have expected it to morph into the beast it now is. Thank goodness the Pyro was given the airblast for example. Previously the only way to take on a soldier as Pyro was to try to jump over his rockets and hope the splash propelled you closer to the enemy. I enjoyed this video for the summary of the game as it is now since delving into the "back in my day" talk probably would have bogged it down too much. I am sad that TF2 is unlikely to evolve much further now and the loss of Rick May making new soldier lines impossible, but it's given me more hours of fun than a game has any right to. I bet a lot of lapsed TF2 players still remember having a favorite weapon with a custom name or description or a beloved cosmetic. The game was great value before it went free to play.

@Bunneer it's not COPIED it's INSPIRED. There's a lots of common opinions, just because Lazy did a video about it first doesn't mean he was the first to think it. He admited Lazy was one of his main inspirations, and you can't blame him! But you don't have to be rude just because he did something similar, it's the internet! It's life, you can't not get inspired by the things you like. And also i feel like you're putting lazy a little too high? No that he doesn't deserve it, he's a great dude, but i feel you're gloryfying him and that won't be good for you nor for him, because you WILL get dissapointed at the littlest thing you disagree with him and he will be put under so much pressure. Sorry, i overextended a little bit, but i hope you have a good day/night, and if not, hope it all gets better. (Also hope i didn't sound rude or super mad about it, i just loose it a little when people say 'A copied B!' Just because B is more known than A, and specially when they put B on the top) (Edit: grammar/spelling check)

@@arustwat7766 because you can do fire damage with a flamethrower or flare at longer ranges, and the only time you pull out melee is for a. utility or b. to finish someone off when you're desperate. since the svf does less damage per hit but ignites enemies it's not good for finishing people since it does less burst damage which is why you'd want to use melee anyways, and it provides 0 utility compared to the powerjack, backscratcher, and homewrecker. useless.

The part about Valve having abandoned this game, with videos spanning one, two, three years back all mentioning the same thing, feels so painful now. Valve really did let the game and its community go. Nowadays, only the occasional developer over at Valve will willingly go and bug fix TF2 on their downtime. That's all we're able to get. Once a while during holidays they pick up a few community cosmetics to ship out as well. That's it. The game, as far as updates go, is dead in the water. But in terms of community size, and active player base, it's bigger than it's ever been! Insane to think about.

I’ve been following TF2 for ages because I was drawn by the characters, style, and animated shorts, but I could never really get into it because none of my friends had the means to play the game and I don’t like getting into a game by myself. I thought my salvation had come in the form of Overwatch, and for a while it did. I had a ton of fun with my time in Overwatch and I don’t regret my time with it. It had the varied characters, a fun art style, and great cinematics that drew me in, like with TF2, and I dug out my own little niche by becoming a Lucio main and getting really good with him. It also brought me years of fun with my friends, which is what we were really looking for. But now, after finally getting back to wanting to get into TF2 after Overwatch kinda died within my friend group, I wondered why the game my friends and I had loved and played for hours on end failed to keep us hooked but TF2 seemingly has an endless, timeless quality to it that Overwatch somehow doesn’t seem to have despite the clear passion put into the game by the devs. And I think I finally have the answer. Both the style and story telling of TF2 is far more timeless than something like Overwatch. That plus Overwatch doesn’t really have any mechanical depth. It’s a very rigidly made game as it is more designed for competitive play, and I guarantee the devs saw things like rocket jumping, untelegraphed instant kill abilities, and other such abilities as not balanced, so there is no mechanical depth. You can merely get better at the fixed and rigid tools they give you, with no really room for experimentation. That is fine for a competitive game, but I don’t think competitive games are necessarily built to last in the same way that something like TF2 is. But alas, with TF2 being left in the state that it is, being Valve’s lack of a desire to push meaningful content to it anymore, it being NOT noob friendly in the slightest, and the game riddled with bots, it really just seems like the best course of action Valve could take would be to just make TF3 or some kind of TF2 successor. It is sad, but I don’t think it is fair for us to make Valve work on the same game for the rest of time. I mean, these are the guys that freaking made Half-Life, L4D, Portal, and TF2 itself! These guys make great fucking games. Sure, you may be thinking whatever successor they make likely won’t be as innovative and timeless as TF2 is, and other such things and I understand that. But I think being able to accept the parent company of something wants to move on is important, both for invigorating new passion in the devs but also for allowing new members to join the community more easily. I’m sure the community surrounding TF2 would continue to go strong for years following the release of its successor, much like how Smash Bros Melee still has a massive community following it despite no support from the parent company since its original release and THREE sequels. But I think allowing Valve to move on and make new things is extremely important.

Great video! Or should I say... great feature-length movie!? It's always great to hear more validation for loving TF2. I appreciate the time you took on each class to describe what makes them fun on their own individual merit. Videos like this really put into perspective just how much of an enigma TF2 is in the scope of modern video games, and makes me proud to play it and be a part of the community. TF2 is definitely lightning in a bottle and it's crazy to think about how long it's stayed popular - often beating out the relevancy of more mainstream games that have proceeded it. Just goes to show how rewarding gameplay along with spectacular character design majorly affects the longevity of a game. Current and future game developers could certainly learn some valuable lessons from the philosophy behind the way TF2 is built. My only complaint is with the devs' lack of communication and the update droughts, but that seems to be an overall flaw of Valve as a company. (Also, random crits...) Still, TF2 is definitely here to stay and I sincerely believe it will be a very long time before it's completely irrelevant within the genre it popularized. Again, great video! Subbed :)

I know this video is almost 3 years old at this point, but honestly thank you so much for the content that you create and I absolutely love this video. I love your retrospect videos, I’ve watched your one about the Wii and GameCube, and as someone who’s just started playing TF2 (yep, in 2023)… this one piqued my interest. You’ve covered so many things that are still actuate about the modern state of the game even 3 years later, and I actually learned a thing or 2 about some of the classes. I know this is just a silly KZbin comment on an older video, but you always make your videos so personal and I feel compelled to share my experience with the game. You also always really drive home the whole point of video games - to have fun! And that’s what I’ve been doing with TF2 for the few months I’ve been playing. I play with my best friend at least once a week and we’ve already been having a blast, I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard at some of our shenanigans. Anyway, thank you for your content man, you always remind me about what’s important about these games we play. Community, connection and fun. Thank you!! :D👍

So I'm super late to this video, but I wanna share a memory from this game from like 8 years ago. It was Memorial Day weekend, 2014, I was a Junior in High School and I was still reeling from the breakup of my first relationship (Young love lol). All of my friends had fun plans for the day; pool parties and BBQs to name a few, and I was too socially awkward to ask to come along to anything so I just stayed home. I decided to hop on TF2 for a couple rounds to take my mind off the world. What occurred were some of the most memorable moments I can recount from that game. It turned what was supposed to be an hour of play into an all-nighter session. To the Heavy who thanked me after a heal, to the Engi I had a small chat with while fortifying the base, and the other Scout who reassured and helped mentor me in my Scout main, I thank all of you. I honestly wish I could go back and relive that day.

TF2 is the game that had the biggest or one of the biggest impacts on me in my life. I've struggled with depression and anxiety for years, but whenever I went on TF2 and got the winning cap as heavy, pushed an uber into a ravine as pyro, solo healed my whole team while we were defending the choke as medic or just went on a community trade server and taunted with some f2ps, hearing and seeing the gratitude and joy from people even if it's a simple z+2 or gg at the end of the match made me keep going. There's something seriously special about this game, and it's deeper than the sum of its parts, the community made it what it is, the community will keep it going.

I was a spy, and dear God I did not know anything, but it felt nice to play as a sneaky baguette man who honked and honked and blew away someone when I backstabbed them. Later in the game, it was a 2 v 3, as many people started leaving en masse for whatever reason, and despite my newcomer stance, me and another gentleman coordinated hard and won the game. After that, we had a private melee-only Soldier and Scout fight. I don't think newer players can ever get that kind of interaction, as I played that game a few months ago. It's sad, really. My team was very supportive of me and it really inspired me to play medic more often. But once you fight sentient players he becomes much more difficult to play. He somewhat designed to be a combo class, quickly switching between weapons to maximize damage. You can pull off some insane plays combining fire, airblast, the flare gun, and the axtinguisher. Check out the youtuber Sketchek for some amazing examples. -Spy: Spy is considered by almost everyone to be the weakest class in TF2 and the problem comes down to his fundamental design. He relies on the enemy team being distracted, something that you cannot control. Playing spy really becomes difficult in organized competitive matches. You hardly ever see him picked and when you do he is almost always switched after dying or getting a kill. -Movement: God this is by far my favorite part of TF2. Something about the source engine movement in this game is just perfect. It might just be because TF2 was the game that taught me how to play FPS but I find that a lot of modern shooters really lack in this department. TF2 allows for air-strafing by pressing a directional key instead of W and smoothly moving your mouse in the direction you want to go. Taking advantage of air-strafing is probably one of the biggest differences between a casual player and a pubstomper. It is super important for rocket jumping as soldier, double jumping as scout, and surviving damage as medic. Rocket jumping especially is something that has kept me playing tf2. I've spent full nights on jump maps practicing the mechanic and I still don't think im good enough. -Competitive: I don't know what you meant by saying highlander was the preferred competitive type because I think most people agree that 6s is the format is king. The issue with competitive TF2 is that the game was not designed with competitive play in mind. This can be seen in some class designs (spy) and a lot of the map designs (CTF). The community has done a pretty good job creating their own 6s format that works. Unfortunately this means weapon bans, class restrictions, and a very limited map pool. Valve ""recently"" seam to have been updating weapons with competitive play in mind but there are still issues in Valve's version of competitive. It really is a shame that competitive TF2 never took off competitively because I think it would make a fantastic esport. The youtuber FUNKe has a great video about tf2 as an esport and I recommend you check it out. This video is a great introduction to your channel for me and I'm sure to check out some of your other stuff. Keep them comming- PS: I would recommend using the following console commands. TF2s default interp rates are disgusting and cause a noticeable delay when firing projectile weapons. cl_interp 0 (the delay between firing and the projectile coming out) cl_interp_ratio 2 (prevents packet loss caused by cl_interp 0) rate 80000 (this is really dependent on your internet speed. Usually set between 60000 and 80000) cl_updaterate 66 (tf2 servers run at 66hz so you want to be in sync) cl_cmdrate 66 (same as above)

-"The issue with competitive TF2 is that the game was not designed with competitive play in mind." - -Thaaaaank you. This is the exact thing that's bugging TF2 Comp. - When Liam said on competitive 6v6 1:08:41- "I believe this is how tf2 was meant to be played" I visibly recoiled lol. TF2 was never -designed with 6v6 balance in mind. It was never meant to be competitive but if people could extract competitive play out of it, they had -the freedom to try. - -I actually believe that TF2's lifespan can be attributed to the fact that it was a casual experience. - - * 12v12, which is rare today, as for some fucked up reason, low playercount is the new black. - - * No competitive scene nor plans to have one, it was purely fun and games. - - * Large focus on the community, with all the necessary tools to make maps, mods, addons, plugins, you name it. - - Unfortunately, people design games off of TF2's exterior and not what's in it's heart. The community that loves to play the game because it is fun, not only because they want to improve...

Thanks for the video! I am a tf2 player only since roughtly a month ago and I mostly play sniper, spy and scout. I realize now why is tf2 so special and why I keep coming back I Never was there in 2010 to the golden era of valve games: gmod, tf2, left 4 dead etc now I am playing them after years of seeing random videos in sfm or gameplay. Tho tf2 was introduced to me with sfm animations and the others gameplay mostly. Since I was born in 2005 I Never really experienced this golden age I am just kinda there to pick up the pieces. Your video further motivated me to git gud at tf2. Even when I did not play tf2 I felt really sad when Rick May passed away the montages and the people online playing their respects. I am truly envious that I coudn't experience this era of wonder and fun.

Haha, this takes me back to the summer of 2016. I was in between my freshman and sophomore years of high school, and I spent a probably downright unhealthy amount of time playing competitive TF2 with my friends. We weren’t really any good(we named our team “Wood 1 Warriors,” Wood 1 being the lowest rank you can have in TF2 matchmaking). I mained Pyro, and I honestly can’t count the amount of games that we won because of the air blast. Good times.
