There is no rule about not training in Russia if you want to compete internationally. Morisi is avoiding Russia because as a Russian citizen, he could be drafted. Technically all of the male skaters could be drafted, but national team members are likely to be given exemptions, and they already have been. But since Morisi doesn't compete for Russia, he's less likely to be given an exemption so he's at a higher risk of being drafted and sent to Ukraine. It's better for him to stay in Italy or anywhere except Russia until the war ends. I'll use another Georgia skater as an example, Gubanova continues to train in Russia and she has been and will continue to compete internationally. She's also a Russian citizen like Morisi, but women aren't being sent to war so she's safe.

I will never forget this one reddit comment from the Shoma Eteri scare of 2019 that was like "I really don't think that Eteri is a good match for Shoma Uno, an adult man who loves food." 💀💀💀 And it wasn't. He evidently chose being without a coach over being coached by Eteri. Of his time in Russia he said, "you do as you're told and are not allowed to do anything else." I really do not foresee this going well for Daniel, even if we were just talking about the skating side of things. Add on top of that the doping scandal and the war in Ukraine, and this decision goes from shortsighted to morally unjustifiable.

Dany’s teams seems to have a good relationship with Tut and he has always wanted to train there and he sort of have her technique. He might get the EU title this years which will be historic for Italy and maybe get to the world podium. She definitely won’t make him a full skater and help him in the lack he has. Also, it’s very inconsiderate timing to go to Tut. So as an Italian I’m very disappointed but I’m sure it’ll bring him some success. Daniel leaving his coach and moving to Sambo 70 actually hasn't been OFFICIALLY confirmed. It is possible that he is just training there for now. That being said, this is such a HUGE mistake. Not only for him but also because it is so disrespectful to go train in Russia under pro-Russian symbols when there is a literal war (one of the people that took in Ivan Schmuratko during the off-season was Daniel's coach, Lorenzo Magri so Daniel would have seen how the war impacted Ivan). The Italian Federation should really put their foot down about this considering that Italy has been one of the biggest refugee countries for Ukrainians. And don't get me started on Eteri's exposed abuse of children. I know Daniel said pre-war that he would like to train at Sambo 70 because he idolizes Anna Scherbakova but after what was put on display in Beijing, he should have changed his tune. And Daniel DAMN WELL knows that everyone is PISSED because he turned off his Instagram comments when people started calling him out for training in the country responsible for the war going on, and for working with a known child abuser that starves and drugs children.

You make such an interesting point about Eteri getting the lay of the land for her daughters competitive advantage…. I must say I may be biased when it comes to ice dance in the US because I’ve seen some of the most gorgeous skaters here… some of which I’d rather see skate an hour straight rather than someone who can do quads. In fact, one of my favorite solo ice dancer is Liz Yoshiko Schmidt (check her out if you haven’t already; she has the best skating skills and control in skating imo). Anyhow, all I’m saying is Eteri has a huge task in front of her if she’s looking to become an international coach, and as much as I think she doesn’t have much to offer other than for female skaters at age 12-16, I do wish her the best in her endeavors. If she could even handle the smallest piece of feedback (I say that because the best leaders know how to receive feedback and can put aside their own ego and self-image), especially as a former competitive figure skater in school to understand psychology and counseling (specifically sports, trauma, attachment theories), there’s a lot she’s going to need to adjust in terms of her coaching style when it comes to reaching and maintaining an international pool of talent.

Also Morisi occasionally does well in that camp. He's got medals from Europeans and Grand Prix, not the same as Olympic medals, but could be counted as success regardless. But agree on Tarasova Morozov, there is a whole bunch of people working with them and their primary coach has always been Maxim Trankov, he is definitely not a new addition, he's been training them all along.

Maybe it's about the money. If the Rusian federation is willing to pay him handsomely (clearly in an indirect way) he should get it because he can't know how long his career will last and a life-changing payday could be a very good decision.

holy fuc**ng shit!!!! haven't he heard about Shoma experience like for real, or heard about all male athletes that have been ruined by her? the boy have always been criticized about his artistry and then he decides to work with Tutberidze the killer of artistry and teacher of back destroying jumping techniques? Like i can't see what he's hoping to gain by training with her else then maybe the Tutberidze scoring bonus.

Honestly, can't see anything big about it. First of all, you totally can compete for other countries, even if you train in Russia with a Russian coach, i. e. Morissey, Anastasia Gubanova. Second of all, Morissey had a decent run with Tutberidze for a skater of his abilities. I mean, he's podiumed at Europeans and he doesn't seem to be particularly broken, so there's that. And finally, Daniel Grassl isn't anything special himself. People find him attractive and probably like his programs, but his jumping technique is exactly what people complain about with Tutberidze. And with this same technique he goes for Quad lutzes, no less. Just to say that I can't see any reason to like and over-hype a skater like him so much, apart from him not being a "young Russian girl abused by a bad-bad witch in a Moscow concentration camp". In summary, I'd say that a reason for transfer is indeed Tutberidze's big name, but apart from that, say whatever you want, but they do know how to deliver their skaters to the Olympics in their prime shape at whatever cost. Grassl just doesn't mind to make this deal with the devil.

Blind ambition, indeed. I give it a month. Then Danny G. will give an interview and say it didn't work out because Grassl was lazy.

I wonder if Daniel is doing this under pressure from Ilia? Tutberidze's reputation is results at any costs, and maybe he thinks he's ready to pay up? Can't imagine it ending well for him if he stays, given her history.

Important to note that the Shoma and team tut partnership went horribly. I saw somewhere that Danny G called Shoma a “lazy skater”. Shoma went on to say that it was too restrictive for him and brought him back to his younger years as an athlete…hence the split. She really can’t coach boys😭😭

Two things I don't understand either: 1. Why Eteri, from the technical side? Why her, of all people, yes, even considering the number of medals the ladies discipline has brought her? What makes Daniel think that he will be the first successful male skater under Eteri? I mean, if you're a pair skater, you wouldn't go to Brian Orser, right? 2. Why Eteri, even politically? The doping investigation is still going and even if Daniel thinks he will benefit from some media attention, politicking on her side... Why does he think in the current situation of yes, world politics, that a controversial Russian coach will get him anywhere? She can only garner hype for him in the RF and her shinanigans with judging and whatever might not even work anymore. She's been nowhere near an international competition in a year.

Firstly, love your channel, followed figure skating for years, and your analysis is always spot on. Thank you. My predictions: 1. he's aiming for at least Bronze in the next Olympics (in Italy) assuming Uno and Malinin are vying for Gold and Silver. A lot can happen between now and then of course. 2. Russian athletes will be allowed back under a neutral flag (like tennis), and as a (very small) quid pro quo - they will renounce the Team gold but make a big fuss about it, and how unfair it all is but it will all blow over and the Russians will be back. 3.The Eteri bonus will be back, there will be no punishment by the ISU for Sambo 70 overseeing the doping and they'll quietly keep using their "performance enhancement techniques". Sadly, I believe virtually nothing will change. 4. As for this season, he's definitely in the running for European Gold.

Okay, did I fever dream that Dudakov for SURE was at one of this years GP event? In Japan I think? My only thought is that the next news won't be that he is injured and has to sit out the rest of the season, but then again his own choices. He is a 20yo man, who probably knows better than us what goes on in camp Eteri and actually with a sane mind went "yeah that is for me". I honestly would LOVE some official confirmation and comment on this before the Europeans, but even if it was just "training" why the hell had he go to Moscow of all places to "train". Not to mention to hear his logic behind this and if he will also use the flimsy "politics and sports should be seprate" excuse. Does he think going to Eteri will give him a fighting chance against Malinin or any of the Japanese men? Who is lying to this dude and why? Literally why? I guess from Team Eteris side it would finally mean a more established skater moved to them and they need some good media, but Grassl isn't a stable skater so idk what they are hoping for. Just look at this season - 4th in Skate America, wins MJ John Wilson Trophy and 6th at the GP Final. He is more stable than Morisi, sure, but that is a low bar to clear. And as Paola pointed out if Grassl wanted to grow it is prof Mishin, who he should be looking at. Not to mention didn't he switch coaches last year went to the US and then returned super quick since he was homesick? Make it make sense.

Daniel didn't even make it on the podium at the Italian nationals, changing coaches all the time doesn't work for him, in August to the US and back in December to Magri. How can he benefit from, even it's just for training, another change in coaching? Will he risk the European title? Morisi is training in Italy with Magri but with the assistance of the Eteri team, he couldn't stay in Russia and online training doesn't work. So there is the connected Magri-Eteri coaching team, just don't know how far this collaboration goes. Like you said, nothing is officially confirmed and all of this is based on a post from RIA Novosti, a Russian media concern. If he really wants to train in Russia Mishin is absolutely the best option to improve and grow, just look what progress Loena made after his practice camps.
