In recent years, Uganda has become a strong team in world cross country and a competitor to our neighbours in East Africa. In this video, I interview our national coach, Benjamin Njia to find out about the team selection process, the national camp set-up and a bit about their tapering strategy. I also watched the team doing a grass workout 2 weeks before the championships.
The taper discussion is brief. I am interested to find out more about their taper approach here and therefore plan to cover this on a full video in future.

Thank you for showing this! It's really neat to see the training these world class athletes go through first hand. I train and race xc in the south eastern US, and our courses are a little sad compared to European and African ones. They're mostly hard packed dirt with several road/gravel crossings that make wearing spikes a challenge. What I would give to race on a good, muddy course!

Thanks! I’ve run on a few courses with road crossings and yes difficult with spikes!

I think there's quite a difference between UK and US cross country...mostly the amount of mud!

Yes from what I’ve seen of the NCAA XC, the UK courses are tougher but US more competitive at college level

This is a brilliantly simple idea, giving you a month to get your team together to prepare and simulate the championship course. I live in the UK but grew up in Ireland, where the XC courses resemble the UK, either parks, playing fields or even farm land. Farm courses are the worst ground to run on, rough, cut up by animals and full of the things animals leave behind. In Dublin, the capital, there's a purpose built course at the national sport campus, which held the European championships a couple of years ago. Maybe one day they'll host the worlds!

Yeah really helps them bond as a team too. Farm courses sound tough!

Hi Fabio, issue may have been because automatic subtitles were also turned on, I have now removed them so you should be able to see the translated subtitles without issues. Let me know if not working. Thanks
