Thank you. This is the first time seeing many of these routines due to crummy nbc coverage. I feel it’s underreported how great Amy Chow was. In 96, she competed two events for the team, four years later was the only member of the 96 team to successfully make a come back and not only qualify for the 00 team, but compete in the Olympic AA. Congrats Amy!

Considering what happened with Nassar and the overtraining that the girls did before and during the Olympics, it's no wonder many of them weren't able to perform up to their potential. However, Ray, Jamie, and Kristen would end up have great college careers, and Tasha would blossom through the next quad before eventually going to NCAA and having a great career.

that bars composition is a Parkettes HOT MESS. I love Kristen and her grit throughout this Olympics.I can't believe it's the first time we're seeing her beam in 22 years. thanks Olympic Channel.
@jjs50562 жыл бұрын
IDK why Kristen/Parkettes escaped the criticism Atler/Gliders got, despite UB being a problem all 97 (AmCup, ITC, Nats, Worlds) and, after getting a consistent set with high SV in 98, they made changes EVERY. SINGLE. MEET. What's sadder is despite the funky composition (and execution), UB was actually her highest score in Prelims & AA Finals in Sydney. She made World EF on BB in 97 & 99, yet never got a 10.0 SV at the OG and finished her elite career with a fall on a DMT sequence that earned no CV (repeating the 2-foot BHS from her Layout series). UGH. :(
@jonathanong66752 жыл бұрын
@@jjs5056 was it because her two-foot layout started getting downgraded to back pike? she had such solid composition across all routines in 1998, I too was baffled with all the changes.
@jjs50562 жыл бұрын
@@jonathanong6675 Not sure, since as you mentioned, this is only BB routine of Maloney's to be seen from Sydney. But, yes, it seems like a likely place for her to have lost 0.2 from her 1.1 in attempted bonus. (breakdown at the end). The official results book shows every SV awarded, though, and her best effort was 9.537/9.90 SV in TF. The U.S. team was a mess in terms of routine construction - a huge failure of Bela's centralized training system put in place that year. Dawes' BB had a 9.90 SV max (though she'd performed Straddle 1/2 + Straddle in 98, which would've turned her 9.475 into a 9.575. So, the U.S. could've had 9.637 (Maloney) + 9.575 (Dawes), which together with Ray and Chow's 9.687+ 9.625 from prelims, would've been 1 of the top BB tallies... of course, Ray and Chow both missed, but that's not really the point. Chow never achieved a 10.0 SV on FX in Sydney, scoring 9.525/9.90 SV in prelims and 9.625/9.90 SV in TF... she needed both her Double L (D) and 1.5 turn (B) for a full 10.0 SV, and both looked questionable. She could've been a Reserve for FX Finals with 9.625 and the U.S. could've had 3 routines over 9.7 in TF. Maloney's BB: Front Tuck + Beat Jump = D+A = 0.2 Switch Split + Straddle = C+B = 0.1 BHS+BHS+Layout = B+B+D = 0.3 Tuck Jump 1/1 = D = 0.1 Wolf + Rulfova = B+D = 0.3 Front Tuck = D = 0.0 (required Value Part) BHS+BHS+Double Tuck = X+X+D = 0.1 1.1 total bonus.

@@jjs5056Kristen was never the darling of the USA gymnastics. She was consistent and did well, but she never stood out despite her success. Atler was always the IT girl, Moceanu + Zmeskal’s comeback in 98, the rise of Elise Ray + Morgan White, and the surprise comeuppance of Tasha in ‘00. Somehow someone else was in the spotlight over Maloney. Kristen was solid, but honestly I don’t think too many expected too much out of her. Which is why she didn’t get the backlash that Atler had. I was sad her elite career didn’t end on a much higher note at the Olympics. I think her injuries and fatigue really wore her down. Plus with all that we know now with Bella’s incompetence and militaristic handling of the national team when he became national coordinator. The 2000 Olympic team deserved so much better.

I really do feel for this team. They had to deal with a lot of adversity. I wish that we could go back in time to early 2000 or so... Someone could inform the powers that be about the Chinese Age scandal which began at the 1999 worlds... China could have been banned from the Sydney Olympics so these girls could have celebrated their bronze while the Olympics were going on instead of 10 years later... I wonder if that had happened if things could have gone differently in the EF and AA - also wish we could go back in time to prevent the vault height scandal... and Maybe while we are at it we could get the floor ex surface issue solved - and Jamie and Kristen could have competed for a medal in the floor finals. So many what ifs, so many things that went wrong... Oh well. At least they have their bronze from the team competition. Just wish Atler could have been on that team.
