I am just so glad that something good could come out of all the bad in Sydney for all of these ladies.

MrJpman2 in 1996 and prior, the gymnast had to turn 15 in the calendar year- so Alexandra wasnt underage if she were to turn 15 by the end of 1996 (which I think her bday was during the games). Actually, the IOC orders full ceremonies redone at the nearest possible time (typically weeks) when a champion is stripped. In this case, because of the long delay in the investigation, USA Gymastics, in association with the members, agreed that the ensuing National Championships, with the team in business-casual, was the appropriate way to award the medals during the next National Championships.
@bison120314 жыл бұрын
@GymnasticsLovexo They weren't the exact medals. They were copies made to the exact specs as the originals. I can't remember why, but for some reason, they couldn't get the real medals. They also duplicated the same flower arrangements that were given out during the actual ceremony in 2000.

They had to. Dong Fangxiao was found out to be undergae, so they deleted her scores out. The problem is with that, China finishes in last place, which means they lost their bronze medal. USA who finished 4th now moves up to 3rd. If Dong was old enough, they would have the bronze, but they relyed on Dong to compete all events in the team because Kui Yuanyuan got injured. That's a question for the FIG. The FIG never took action for age falsification until Kim Gwang Suk, Dong Fangxiao, and Hong Su Jong. Plus, when the Romanians and Soviet Union gymnasts came forward, it was almost 20-40 years after they won their titles. I doubt it would be worth it to go back and investigate something that happened 40 years ago. It was a pretty common thing to do back in the 1960s-1980s. It wasn't harshly penalized, nor were medals stripped. Kim Gwang Suk was found underage, but she was allowed to keep her 1991 WC uneven bars gold medal.

Bd H I was just reading the other day that Gina Gogean and Alexandra Marinescu were said by the Romanian government to be a year older than they really were so that they'd be age eligible for their respective Olympics.
