I’ve met children who were like this - - like had a cruel streak - - and they turned out to be fine adults. It’s crazy to me. I think some people have to learn empathy and others feel it naturally. I’m certain if I had made an elderly relative cry, the guilt would’ve been what haunted my sleep.

there's this infamous case of the "child of rage" which is really dark- what sona and her brother did seems like nothing but mean child's play- and i guess the situation turned out best as it could. the kid and her brother became "fine and normal" eventually but her therapist that "cured" her got sent to prison, so uhm, google at your own risk.

Years ago, when I was still teenager living with my parents, my stepfather's dad used to live with us. With age his dementia started to kick in. One day he was outside sitting on a porch. My stepfather (his son) asked him what he is doing. He said he is waiting for Helen (his wife, who passed away like 25 years ago). My stepdad reminded him, that Helen passed away long time ago. He started to cry uncontrollably, he was refusing the fact and said, that he is going to call his brother (who at that point was also dead for like 10 years). After that incident, it happened few times, that he forgot his wife is dead, but least the stepfather knew better and just managed to send him to his room without going into details.

Sona's story reminds me of my great grandparents- they lived far away so I only have one clear memory of meeting them in person. I was prob 5 or 6 and my great grandfather had by then pretty advanced dementia and came up to me just trembling and muttering/groaning and I hate to say it but I more or less thought he was a zombie, I was terrified. My great grandmother "translated" the noises and said "he says he loves you very much" but I just wanted to get away asap. Felt bad later looking back but kids be kids. Great grandmother was awesome though, lived to 103 and yeah went from horse and buggy and with many houses not even having electricity to a world of commercial jets, Priuses (Prii according to Toyota), and the first wave of smartphones.

I have to admit that I did something similar in middle school. We had a kid whose mother had passed, and when I found out that he would cry whenever someone mentioned her, I would try to get a many people as I could to go over to him and ask him about his mother. Yes, it was abhorrent and something I'm still ashamed of, but many years later in our adult years I ran across him one night and profusely apologized to him, which he thankfully accepted. Sometimes kids just don't fully understand their actions until they get older.

I was the first to post the strip on the last episode they talked about it, strange how Gourly did zero research. Here's my original post: 'And Her Name Was Maud' is a comic strip by Frederick Burr Opper. It first appeared in the Hearst newspapers on July 24, 1904. Maud was a revenge-seeking mule belonging to farmer Si Slocum and his wife Mirandy. Most of the action was a build-up to Maud kicking someone into the air. Si was the most frequent victim.
