I sat in front of Steven Wright at a Paul McCartney concert at Fenway Park several years ago and after every song he said in that classic tone, "I wonder what he's gonna play next?" It was hilarious.

The transition to talking about how Boston became over commercialized and the ad in the middle of this clip for T-mobile was brilliant. A great joke for those that are looking. 😂

Cities in the US were still reeling from urban renewal. The suburbs were exploding. Brookline, where Conan is from, has generally been a pool of wealth along with the chain of MetroWest communities that became home to tech office parks and such. Our cities died and grew from the ashes as with other trends in America.

Conan and Steve are right about Boston being the epitome of a "No Showbiz" town, back then. Not because there weren't talented people, but because there was the Black Hole of NYC that sucked in all of the talent and all of the light and everywhere else except L.A. was a desert of opportunity. That has changed now of course because anyone with a smart phone and the internet has a TV studio in their hands.

"The trick is some of them arnt very good..." man, that is the whole truth for any kind of artist. Even if your goal isnt volume, especially early on you are going to make alot of crap. The only real goal as an artist has to be to reduce the ratio of crap to gold to the point to where its almost all gold. But the crap is still going to be in the mix because thats just the nature of creating things.

Back in Boston in the 70's, where you might find Tom Rush performing in the street, or the other busking people trying to earn a living. I know one, Stephen Hollis, who later came to North Beach and never left. Multi-talented, with no money, created an 8 episode talk show that began on a rooftop and then got into local public TV here in San Francisco. The Eddie Show, which many of the episodes are now on KZbin. Eddie the host never had anything work out right. They also did remotes, and his co-host Fred, was a pyromaniac. Very nutty fun, and worth seeking out.

It's far enough away (4 or 5 hours, maybe more back then) that you could not realistically commute. You'd need to stay over. Logistically it's just not worth it. You don't just go to NYC for the day and live in Boston like it ain't no thang. You'd get off the train and then have to get right back on. Granted it's not rural Kansas but for most working class people it almost may as well be.

I’ve been in Boston since the 80’s and I’m guessing Conan may be mixing up his references. He talks about “Le Pain Quotidien” which is an upscale bakery-cafe chain from Europe that you can find in NYC and LA but NOT in Boston, afaik. Another French-sounding chain that did indeed start in Boston and took off in the 80’s was Au Bon Pain. It was the fancier alternative here to Dunkin’ Donuts for a morning coffee and pastry.
