With recent cars, torque is enough that you do not even need to use gas to move forward on a slope, you can simply slowly release the clutch followed by the brake pedal and that's it. With gas, on most slopes, you can use only clutch and brake pedal. The handbrake is rarely of any use. Not to mention that some modern cars even have a system that actually put on the brakes when it detects starting on a slope.

My Chevy SS has an electronic parking brake, so this doesn't work. But it also has an electronic throttle, so I teach students to hold the service brakes with their right foot. Start engaging the clutch until the car begins to shudder and want to go. The ECU adds throttle automatically. Then release the service brakes. If the car still begins to roll back, at least the clutch is already at the engagement point so it's a lot easier to continue from there. The other technique that's easier and works consistently is to just push the throttle pedal all the way down quickly, then once the pedal hits the floor raise the clutch foot very quickly. It's not hard to time it so the tires barely spin. Everything just slams together, the flywheel springs take up the driveline shock, and you take off.

Another way to do this (if it is a rental or a new car): - Have your right foot on the brake and your left foot on the clutch (both fully pressed). - Release the clutch easy and have a look at the rev meter. - When the rev meter starts to dip a little bit (lets say the car stays at 750 rmp when idling, when it starts to go to 700-680 rpm) then you lift your foot off the brakes keep the clutch at said position and start to accelerate. - Once you accelerate you can then slowly lift you left foot till the end. Note: The "have a look at the rev meter" - is necessary if you are not used with the car, after some hill-starts you will do this naturally. Btw, you can actually hold a car uphill just by modulating the clutch and acceleration (but don't do this for more then 5-8 seconds because you will wear the clutch out [the heat build-up will be too big if this technique is used for longer then that]).

Please don't hate me for this:When I was seventeen, although driver's ed taught the handbrake method, you were considered a girl if you used it. We guys prided ourselves in our feel and control of the clutch with the ability to start on the steepest hill, in traffic, with a car with an automagic pulled up to within a millimeter of our rear bumpers the greatest test of manhood. Many of us took our own lives on the spot having stalled the engine. Fifty years later, I can honestly state that I have never used the handbrake method on the road, and I have never owned a car with an automagic. And, no, I do not wear out clutches (prematurely holding the car on a hill by slipping the clutch does that); very little extra slip is needed, but feel and a fast right foot are crucial. Nowadays I actually have to consciously let the car roll back a few inches if I'm feeling annoyed with someone who'd pulled to within a foot on a steep hill stop--give back a little thrill, don't you know.
