I don't see the insanity. 7-8 years older is nothing and there's no evidence they started dating before he was at the age of consent which across the US ranges from 16-18. I don't know the specifics of his home state. Even him taking her to prom at 17 could be that he just simply asked her, for whatever reason (crush, went as friends, nobody to ask, etc). If she was his babysitter then congratulations my friend. You're the envy of many boys and dads.
