i have always remembered latitude and longitude by : latitude laying down, lateral , lay... longitude, long, long tall sally,, long, standing up around the globe. it sounds silly but its always worked for me since 4th grade so i kept that in my memory as thats just how it stuck

"4:01" how can 44 degrees imply that you are in a north quadrant? There is 90 degrees between the north pole and the equator and 90 degrees between the south pole and equator.

No! Wrong! You can do a cross-reference between two different VORs using only one receiver in the airplane. We teach it all the time. In fact, many DEs on check rides will, if they see you have two receivers, make one inop. and then expect you to still cross reference your location.
