Ive seen more and more people getting in with self harm ( took them a long ass time and like 5 or 10 meps visits) but i have the same issue but i have never been depressed or anything i was just a victim of listening to older kids when i was 9 and i still have the scars and have never had anymore issues. They are becoming less strict with a lot of things recently.

I am currently trying to enlist with a past record of depression. It happened when I was 14 years(I’m now 21). The situation developed in school which I engaged in relationship with a person that did self harm, but I didn’t. My teachers found that we took pills (I has stressed to help this person and took like only 5 pills) no big deal. But my parents were concerned and I stayed in a hospital a week only. Had therapy couple months but at the end the psychiatrist told my mom: the only thing that I can say it’s that your daughter is very smart, no further comment. Have never been medicated, never needed therapy past years and had never really meant to take my life. I’m waiting right now for a consult and hopping I get to join! Have never needed any help, I study, work and have accomplish a lot of things, always good grades. Not even a problem child! It was just a crappy record that put me in waiting to join…

My mother had taken me to a hospital for self harm and she had told a nurse that i had been cutting myself which isn't true at all. I went and got a new record saying that the previous record was false. I am waiting for a psych consult now.

So I went through some "mental health" issues 5 years ago. I haven't been on medicine since then either. I'm scared to say anything to my recruiter, but I definitely don't want to lie about anything that's not me. I've wanted to be in the army since I was a kid, seeing my family members going. Now that it's my turn and I know I'm mentally sound and I've been fine since im feeling real stuck. I was told to lie and tell the truth AHHHH what do I do. I take the asvab test thursday 🤯

I just had a single bad day during Covid. Lost several family member to COVID, was constantly harasser due to my ethnicity and started to fall apart in school. I said one wrong thing to the wrong person and I'm now stuck with a history of SI and a medical diagnosis for depression. That was all it took for me to be DQ'd and no recruiter is willing to work with me since then. It was a 1 time case during extremely stressful circumstance but as far as what the recruiters I've talked to tells me I'm never getting in unless I lied my way through and pray. I wanted to Enlist but wanted to graduate my 4 year but now I'm not allowed in and it absolutely sucks because it was the one thing I wanted to do. I said some dumb stuff back then but that what it was in the end but I never expected to have to struggle so much trying to enlist now.

Mine was approved. Mine case is I left the Navy basic at 2020 when I keep getting quarantined 2week and 2.5 week for doing nothing , then I said F it and went to the hospital and said I have those problems but not really have it. I attempted to rejoin after a year but I realized those are hard to get waivers. So I didn’t really try to get back in at all. When it comes to September I did it again. I go to a station and ask them if they are willing to do the waiver ,, then I get a evaluation and a few session of therapy from better help.(takes 1 month to do it). Then just go to meps and within a few month I was shipped to BCT. Hope this helps

I went through the same thing was in Air Force bmt during Covid and hated being separated, and since I got Covid I was set back 3 weeks I said f it and said I wanted to go home, they wrote down failure to adapt/depression, I’m going through the process to join the army now

My waiver got denied , I had no history of medications or psych at all They mistook a few scars on my arm as self harm so they sent me to the psych eval and somehow I failed it , they told me to come back in 6 months since the waiver was denied I didn’t get a “P” tho so I guess I try again next month .. wish me luck

Go get 2-6mo of mental health counseling and get an evaluation done with a behavioral health specialist completed within 2mo before you attempt again to appeal/request a waiver and obtain all clear letters from both. @TEAM SWARTZ I’m looking at some of your older content relevant to my situation. I know I won’t be eligible for a while because I need at least another 12 months since I was on certain prescription medications from what I’ve looked at in the DoD Medical Standards for Military Service (2022). My current strategy is to improve my fitness and discipline in the meantime so I will already be running a 10 min mile and pumping out 50 push-ups before I sit down and tell a recruiter about how I’m going to be more work for them than the average recruit. Getting closer to height/weight already, still a ways to go in 2 mile time and improving upper body strength. That being said, I was assuming it would be best for me to wait to reach out to a mental health provider until the Army tells me to. Otherwise, “Why were you seeking mental healthcare in the last year when you say you are mentally well?” is how I see it playing out in the future. Am I wrong? I also planned on having all of my medical records organized for the recruiter when I start the process (again, still about a year away for me) should I get all of that now instead and start seeing a psychiatrist or therapist about wellness evaluations ASAP? Hello there and thank you for reaching out! Here’s an updated Medical Guide that’ll point you in the right direction. If it’s mental health, 12-36mo from date of completion of your last prescription. Get a Psychologist Psych Consult (1-2hrs) within 6mo of you submitting your medical complex prescreen at MEPS. I wouldn’t worry about doing one now. As for me, I went through a rough patch last year which is why I sought out a therapist but all is well for the most part. It def helps you identify what you don’t see or understand and make sense of things if that makes sense. Nothing wrong with seeking help. I’m in the process of joining the Marines. I got hit with a HIE for my medical. Probably because of asthma problems but my asthma is only bad whenever I’m sick. Also I used to be in the Army and this was back when I was 17, I’m now 25. I was young and dumb and just wanted to go home. I said I was depressed with suicidal tendencies. I got in the end of 2017 and left February 2018. That was the ONLY history I’ve ever had of any mental illness. Do you think it’ll be hard to get medically approved to get into the Marines? I really want this shit to work out.

I have Depression, OCD, and ADHD, extensive history with inpatient care and medication. Recruiter said it will be possible to get a waiver hopefully, but I’m left wondeirng, should I? I want to go infantry, but maybe there’s a reason for my mental health. I’m too weak, mentally and physically for this. Does this also depend on the MEPS station? I have heard that the determination or recommendation for a waiver by the medical officer in MEPS might differ from MEPS station to MEPS station. In other words, one MEPS might be more tough on a potential recruit than another.

Unfortunately this is true. There is a struggle with CMO’s being just right, too loose with approvals and others being too strict. I recently enlisted in the Marines (2023) and had no documented history of mental illness despite that the fact that I've been dealing with depression and occasional suicidal ideation since 2020 (Covid and losing faith with God). I brought it up fairly early on in bootcamp and got an entry level separation with a JGA1 code on my dd214. I've never actually regretted doing something so much in my life. So I wanted to ask, my recruiter told me that it's possible I could get back in if I'm in good shape and apply for the proper medial waiver, so I'm wondering, is it actually possible? I mean, specifically, is there a reasonable enough chance that it's worth trying? Because this dream is still boiling within me and I really want to know for sure if I should fight for it or put it to rest. My case is highly specific and is very different from this video which is why I'm asking. For the record, I'm not suicidal in any capacity and don't require any medication at this point in time. I've also never used medication for it.

Just trying to get some insight. 30yo Retired SSG Looking to rejoin Army. Was inpatient for suicidal ideations in 2017. Had event oriented counseling sessions for years to help combat depression. Was cleared by the Army for psych to do a CSP. I took some medication over 5 years ago. The VA currently shows me having “no open prescriptions” The VA has me as “improved condition” superseding all other evals. Basically the VA has cleared me for Psych. Waiting on the recruiter now to send me to MEPS. Anyone know what curve balls they might throw at me?

Exactly my recruiter told me to get my own psychiatrist so they can see that my mental health is ok but I’m thinking if does that count as DQ since it’s mental health related

Obtaining an updated evaluation supports the narrative you’re good to go in addition to the MEPS directed Psych Eval. The more medical evidence that supports your case the better the probability of a favorable outcome.

So I had bad acid reflux which cause my esophagus to flare up(also was smoking weed) and it cause a panic attack which lead to shortness of breath waking up the next morning But didn't know it was from acid reflux. I did take antidepressant medicine thinking it was depression nd anxiety and also refilled it nd was on it for like 4-5 months until my doctor learn the symptoms was from Gerd (bad acid reflux) currently on that medicine and been fine. But what are the chances of a waiver nd it being approved ?

Unfortunately, acid reflux is a permanent disqualification but if your local recruiter is willing to possibly submit a complex prescreen to see what MEPS CMO says, go for it. so here’s my situation, i was in a major car accident and i was seeing a counselor for only 4 months then i had an assessment with a nurse practitioner and she prescribed me an antidepressant ONE time and i NEVER took the medication. Is it worth telling my recruiter since i didn’t have treatment for 6 months and never took the meds? any advice would be great!

You’ll have to disclose it cuz Genesis more than likely will catch it. Be proactive. Obtain all those records. Get a letter that cleared from it. Obtain your pharmacy records for it as well. Perhaps getting an evaluation done by a mental health professional and get cleared with a letter from them as well. You’ll be fine in the end. I was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia when my best friend died 7 years ago and it honestly just made me depressed but I went to counseling n inpatient twice when an abuse bf called police out of spite but I really pulled myself up out of it and haven’t been on any prescription in well over 6 years. Now I fully have my mind fixed on enlisting in active duty and have done extensive research on the waiver process but haven’t spoken to a recruiter as yet in fear tht I will be turned away. Should I give it a shot?

Serious question, I was 51/50 for 72hrs but was released and never court ordered, I have no background of mental health issues nor do I have an diagnoses of any mental health issues, MY 51/50 was due to be being extremely drunk, a welfare check was called on me by my friends and the cops showed up and I answered, I was super drunk and they asked if i wanted to go with them and I agreed, thus getting me a 51/50. Do i have even a chance?
