Terminals match up nicely with 9v alkaline…would it be hard to modify this so that increasing input power from 3 to 9v wouldn’t damage it? What would that do to the high voltage output which is currently about 3-4 kV, I think.? Thanks.

I live in Arizona, we've got a lot of the same annoying, sometimes poisonous, critters running around that you do in Austrailia. What size was that transformer you used? What do you think would deliver more punch, using batteries with higher voltage or ramping up the transformer? For a big bug killing zapper, do you need a new capacitor also?
@chich7089
@chich7089 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, the tranformer is the standard one fitted to the bug zapper, I'll do a video later and I'll be increasing the battery voltage to see what the zapper will do. Some extra capacitors will be added as well just for the fun of it. Good luck with your critters!!!

Is it possible to electrify insect window screen to zap mosquitoes that are trying to get at you? I was looking out my window one evening and within minutes there were dozens of mosquitoes attracted to me exhaling CO2. If it weren't for the screen separating us, they would have feasted on me. I would love to be able to watch these vermin roast as they attempt to get at me.

This is really awesome! Thank you for this video. I live in Brazil and I definitely need a more powerful zapper. ALSO: Has anyone made a "traditional" bug zapper out of one of these rackets? The kind of bug zapper that has a light in the center and the insects fly to it and get zapped. One of my rackets broke and I was thinking of rolling the screens into a cylinder/roll and putting a light in the center. I think it might work, but not to sure, because when you hit the bug with the racket, there is a lot of force that causes the insect thru the first screen and into the second screen. Maybe the insects won't be able to kill themselves properly by touching both screens at the same time. LOL.

@@chich7089 I've noticed, an electrolytic capacitor of this value only charges to around 475V, standard it reaches 840V. So I added a couple 275V film capacitors instead so it still reaches it's 840V. Namely I have these three now in it: xgd-x2 mkp (standard), x1 ckx 824k 300v and a ps105k, both of those out of an old broken PC Power supply. It works and cooks more but since it's the same voltage with the double AAs it doesn't zap better at all, only cooks better.

Don't understand how you could use caps rated at only 300-500 volts (as described in some of the comment replies.) Isn't the secondary creating something like 2 or 3 KV (I know it's DC, but its still in the kilovolt range)? Seems like those capacitors would break down at that voltage.
@serhio4275

Well i think he looked at what capacitor originally was inside and since it not breaks down it's voltage is okay. But maybe some not so honest manufacturer made it cheaply by putting inside capacitor without voltage reserve, and it's not good. The best way is to make a measurement through divider.

The current (amps) at the AC end is very small, it would tickle a fly. Therefore its converted to DC and the capacitor is used to store the charge, thus supplying high voltage and a burst of high current enough to zap a fly.

DC doesn't increase voltage going thru a transformer, so you have to convert DC to AC using that oscillating transistor. The transformer hikes the voltage up and then the diodes convert back to DC to do the zapping.

The bug zappers don’t work because flies seem to be attracted to smell not light and you cAnt really place the bait efficiently in them. I had several of those zapstick stun guns laying around, so i gutted one of them, as well as my flyswatter. Then i simply transfered the stun gun "insides" to my flyswatter, and upgraded to a 9v battery. The result is extremely effective at killing any bug ive needed to kill, particularly paper wasps. And whats nice is that i can hold the button down and get a continuous zapping effect, as opposed to having to press the button over and over for each "charge".

@ripstephenhawking8787
@ripstephenhawking8787 2 жыл бұрын
No, adding additional capacitance only increases the level of stored charge. It does nothing to change the voltage ⚡ input. To increase voltage you can do one of 3 things. Increase battery voltage to say a 9v battery. Modify the built in voltage doubler circuit into a tripler by adding additional capacitors and diodes to the circuit. Swap out the transformer for one with a higher turns ratio. OR..... you could just do away with the factory guts and make one of those 50,000v modules for sale on Amazon and eBay fit inside the handle along with adding the biggest 3.5-6v rechargeable lithium battery you can cram into it. Guaranteed devastation then!
@ripstephenhawking8787
@ripstephenhawking8787 2 жыл бұрын
If you do modify the circuit by increasing voltage ⚡, THEN you may have to install a capacitor with a higher voltage rating.... just remember that a capacitors voltage rating is only indicative of what it can withstand voltage wise. It says nothing about total capacitance and is not to be interpreted as an output value. A 10,000 v capacitor can work just as fine at 5 volts. Just don't exceed 10k on voltage.

Nice..... but, A capacitor in parallel adds its value to the value of the capacitor already in the swatter. This creates a bigger spark But the fly swatter remains under tension for minutes after letting go of the pushbutton. Therefore, a discharge resistor must be placed across the capacitor for safety. I think 22M 1/8 watt is enough (red red blue) I also wonder whether the electronics can withstand the larger charging current because the capacity has been increased. The voltage on the red wires outside the swatter is about 2000 Volts so the insulation of the wires is questionable. It is better to keep the capacitor inboard, there is enough space. Also do not cross the wires inside to the wire maze on the outside but run them parallel to the capacitor leads to avoid a flashover between wire end capasitor. Who I am? I'm a technical engineer at KEMA, The Netherland.

Yes, you are right about the grids being electrically connected to the capacitor, but I found it near impossible to solder on the aluminium grid, hence taking apart the handle to solder on the capacitor leads. Thanks for your comment Kenneth...

The original capacitor is usually 1.5/2kvolt, the one you have mounted is certainly lower if you have removed it from a grinder, with the voltages involved it risks exploding.

@@chich7089 I'v been thinking about building a mouse trap with these zappers.But I don't want to kill myself.With the component you added if i added another one do you think that would kill a mouse?.So there would be 3compacitors all up.My email is flyingonetoe@hotmail.com thanks

.22uf doesn't really seem like much. What are the voltage ratings on those capacitors? I'm thinking the extra capacitance wouldn't increase the voltage at all but it would increase the current during the discharge. Definitely be careful.

It will kill. Not more volts just more ampers discharged. Good bang for buck
