Good review the only problem with dewalt is the warranty 90% of the time gets denied as field damage and shipping cost on your end... Hercules go to a Harbor freight and will get it exchange No questions asked

You also have to consider who these are.marketed to. I bought the el'cheapo HF grinder about 7 years ago. I only use it for small projects. Left it out in the rain for about a week accidently. Still does what I need. Of course it sounds like a bunch of angry Badgers in a garbage can, but it still gets the job done.

Freaking awesome video!!!! I love watching you taking things apart to expose the inside of things. Pretty cool!!! As a Dewalt fanatic I have started seeing a lot of similarities in some other brands compared to Dewalt. Harbor freight has ready stepped up the quality of things in the last few years. And this was one of them. Thanks for the video!

A few key places to inspect on reviews of power tools. 1.) The brush material. Compare the density and melting characteristics. Both of which determine how long a tool will last. 2.) The machining on the comutator. Smooth is better because it won't wear down the brushes. 3.) The actual electrical load. A really good way to see how powerful it actually is. 4.) Noise level when using the tool. If you are going to use the tool for any amount of time it's nice to know what level of hearing protection you need. Thats all that I can think of for now.

Glad I happened to come by your channel, subscribed. Once the warranties were similar the price of the HF grinder was at the same price point as the DeWalt. If HF thinks they're going to win over customers on dollar for dollar apples to apples comparisons with the name brands they are mistaken. HF will have to offer MORE for LESS (like the five drawer tool cart when it's on sale), otherwise I'll just continue to get the name brand. I pick and choose tools from HF very carefully.

You can get a 2 year warranty on the HF for $20, which makes it the exact same price as the Dewalt. The dewalt warranty says it's 3 years, but it's really only 1 year. The last 2 years only covers parts, which will obviously be secondary to labor in cost. You also have to pay to ship it to them, and take the chance that your warranty claim is denied. With HF, you throw the tool on the counter for ANY REASON,, and then you get a replacement. You don't even need a receipt. Just tell them your phone number. Dewalt will require a proof of purchase, but if you bought it in store, the odds you kept that receipt are near zero.

If a harbor freight grinder fails you can take it to be exchanged without a problem.Not sure you can take back a DeWalt back to wherever you bought it for a replacement.I think you have to send it back to the manufacturer.

That is right. If you buy 2 year warranty, you can just get it replaced right away. (Almost any other store will take return in 90 days, so 90 day warranty is meaningless) But FYI, that is ONE TIME replacement warranty. Unless you buy additional 2 year warranty at the time of replacement, you don't have any more warranty on that item. I don't know if anything changed for Hercules brand, but it was like that 2~3 years ago, so I don't buy any more extended warranty from them. Also, I had to throw away $40 impact wrench because I couldn't buy any more brushes separately. Not a big money, and I think I got more than the money's worth, but still, throwing away a tool because of brushes didn't feel good. Hopefully HF sells brushes for Hercules tools. So, if you use the tools once in a while and don't need any warranty, HF is a good way to go. But if you use the tools for life, there might be couple things to consider before buying HF tools.

Did you notice at 1:54 that the Hercules brush spring was out of the groove to the left? As the brush wears down, the spring would potentially catch on the brush holder and not push the brush down. Not sure if you bumped it during disassembly of the cover or it it came that way from the factory. Something to watch out for I guess.

One thing I would add is it sounds like you are implying that sealed bearings are superior to shielded but that is only true contextually. Shielded bearings are lower friction and will last longer but sealed is preferable for dirty environments. Great channel, subbed.

Cheap ass HF angle grinders are legendary. Most folks when they are asked sum up the ownership experience say, It doesn't owe me a dime. I've seen Metabo angle grinders beat to death. Angle grinders simply are not the kind of tools that last. They go like hell in an environment full of grit. That is not a recipe for longevity.

i have and have used both of these accept my dewalt is the near 100 dollar paddle throttle one but they are both great accept for the paddle part, they are both well made and powerfull, i lean to the harbor freight cause of the value and it seems to stay much cooler under a hard thrashing, the inside of the 100 dollar one isnt too much different but it uses a much nicer switch than both of the ones in this video and it has screw terminals as well, it has a few 1 ups on the hercules but it better, its over twice the price

This harbor freight grinder looks pretty good. I think if you wait for a sale and then buy the harbor freight grinder, pay for the 2-year replacement plan that's the best way to go. like other people have said the harbor freight isn't even really a warranty it's a straight-up replacement plan. You bring it in you're under the period they're going to give you a new one no sending it out no waiting.

It's a little surprising and good to see Harbor Freight is actually stepping up some of their products. I think for a beater or a option in a hurry, the Hercules would be the go to. But I agree, the warranty on the DeWalt makes it slightly more appealing. How about when they are running? Any differences in vibration would also be worthy of taking note because no one is going to want either if they are going to rattle you to death.

But unless you use this tool A LOT, it's likely not worth buying the warranty. The warranty is an added cost that you don't need.

Mister Hat Thanks for the warranty clarification, it is one of the reasons I decided to go with the Hercules grinder. I did not want to spend the $ on a warranty, because I do little metal work being primarily a wood worker. I had 2 jobs to do that would have been a lot of work with a hack saw and files. The Hercules did them fine and saved me time, but it will no doubt sit on the shelf for some time now. The little I use a grinder, the Hercules lets me use a better machine at a discount. Win win for me.

Warranty? Angle grinders are consumables. It breaks, go out and buy another. Really if you're breaking angle grinders that means you need to step up to a bigger model. Once you break down and get a 7/9" big boy angle grinder things change. You can really lean on one of those mombos. You'll quit before it does. I can tell you that. But the price of entry on 7/9s is high.
@robswrenches9501

"You'll quit before it does." LOL. You make a good point Paul, but as long as they're offering it, hey, what can one say. Exchange it for smaller jobs and also step up to what you actually need.
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 6 жыл бұрын
+Rob's Wrenches I used to kill 4.5 angle grinders left and right til I started getting the bigger 7/9" models. When you push with a 7/9 stuff just goes away. You can mow down a gnarly weld bead in one shot. It is simple math a tool twice as big does the work in half the time. It might even work out better than that? A 4.5 on a big bead you're back and forth, back and forth grinding it away. A 7/9 kind of scrapes it off. You really have to see it for yourself to get what I mean. There's a reason they charge close to two beans for those big grinders. They're monsters! When I really push with a 7/9 the bead starts glowing, then it gets all soft, and it just smears off. If I try to do that with a 4.5 they just give up the ghost.

I wouldn’t buy either one because of the thumb switch. A few bucks more for a paddle switch model. The paddle switch is easy to use because it’s within the normal grip of holding the tool. The thumb switch requires you to take your thumb off gripping duty to push the switch forwards, which forces your hand down the grinder, requiring you to hold it more tightly, tiring you out more. Your thumb gets tired more quickly as well. Spend the extra $5, or so, for a paddle model. It’s well worth the difference.

Casey Megginson Well, it may not be quite that simple in this case. It does appear the DeWalt uses a moly grease. But the HF doesn't use plain-old cheap axle grease like the cheaper HF grinders. Based on appearance, the HF uses a fully synthetic grease of some type. I didn't include info about the grease because I didn't think it was that interesting.

I went into Harbor Freight yesterday for their Labor Day 25% off coupon. Had this Hercules angle grinder in my cart. The cashier says "Would you like to add 2 year protection for $20?". I said why would I want purchase $20 insurance on a $30 tool. He says no it is $40. We don't take the 25% coupon on Hercules. Sure enough it said that in tiny print. Then he says but this one is better than the other ones we sell. So I said, then why do I need a 2 year warranty on it for $20? I found another 20% off coupon though that has exclusions but Hercules is not listed. See if they refuse to honor that one which would drop the price to $32. Stay tuned.

How can Harbor Freight offer a 90 day Warranty on their higher end brands that cost more and 90 days on their 50% Cheaper Grinders? That makes no sense. If that is the case, for 20 bucks more, i will go with the Dewalt , Better Warranty, and Customer service. A peace of mind is worth $20 more if it was more than that, I would consider the HF, Hercules Brand. Great Video's, You got me tuned in 😀

That's what I'm saying. The extended two year warranty is the same price as two of those crappy DrillMaster angle grinders they sell ($9.99 with coupon)...and 50% of total tools cost. My only conclusion is that Harbor Freight doesn't have a tool problem, they have a customer problem. I think too many people use Harbor Freight like a rental service, and too many people just beat the hell out of their tools because Harbor Freight accepts any condition returns. Having long factory warranties would hurt them...hence the astronomical 50% extended warranty. It probably factors in all the people who will bring back a broken tool with 1 day left on their warranty, or get a replacement every month because they beat on it. In fairness to HF, I have seen them accept a Predator 4 cycle gas engine return that was completely spray painted and missing parts. You could intentionally run a tool over with a truck and they'd happily take it back.

Harbour freight power tools (the sanders anyway) are a lot better than Dewalt. I purchased a Dewalt palm sander, and a Dewalt random orbit sander. I didn't even get a year out of either. I replaced them with Harbor Freight sanders, and both are still going strong after 5 years, and they both get heavy use daily.

Nothing was said about the wrench. When you opened the Dewalt box, there wasn't a wrench to be seen - only an Allen wrench. What is that Allen wrench for? I have used HF's mid-priced orange grinders for years. I grind both steel and concrete. Grinding concrete wears out a grinder, so I am reluctant to use a high dollar tool for that. When a HF tool gives out, it is not a large burden to go pick up another - they are simply disposable. With a 25% off coupon that I get for special times, I think that I'll try the new Herc model.

It’s a good point. I did forget to mention the wrenches. On the DeWalt, you use the Allen wrench on the nut. It fits in a hex on the nut.

I was confused when I opened the box and only found an allen wrench! Seems like it will work fine plus easy and inexpensive to replace a lost allen key.. Think I will secure it near the plug end.. This tends to force me to unplug to replace the wheel..

:25 I already know how it compares. I just bought a 4011 TODAY (May 26, 2019) and within 10 minutes it was overheating to the point I couldn't really touch it with bare hands (i had gloves on tho) and it was vibrating bad using a wire brush that became lopsided and you couldn't touch the handle w/o your hand going numb. I'm going to take this piece of crap back TUESDAY and request a refund.

According to the World Steel Association, there are over 3,500 each has a different price, stamped or forged plus heat treaty. to the naked eye, both gears look identical How can you tell if one manufacturer suspense more money on the critical gears? The only difference I see DeWalt rolling its warranty price into Angle grinder. I personally went with the Harbor Freight Only use it once or twice a year and I skip the warranty, my reasoning was it was 50% the price of a new one just too much money for 2yr.

id like to see those gears under a microscope. AVE did a BOLTR a while back, and the DeWalt he tore down was a powder metal gear, that was cleaned up via machining. very deceiving...

Over filling a grease box is never a good idea. Full would be over full too. What you're seeing in these tools is the right amount.

The rotor and armature on the HF looked much larger. Not rooting for HF- I own Dewalt myself, a pricer version.

While it's true that it rotates it is an armature and that motor is what is called a universal motor.. ( Licensed electrician and industrial controls technician..) Not trying to one up you just wanted to clarify.. As a side note DeWalt grinder uses 18awg cord which is rated 10 amps while marginal it is adequate but agree 16awg cord on Hercules is better than required plus more flexible being SV cord vs SVT and can take more abuse as well.. Personally I feel a 90 day warranty is rather weak and over the course of 3 years things can fail and DeWalt backs up their product mush better than HF.. Thanks for your informative videos :)

You didn't compare the brushes which I think is why harbor freight only offers a 90 day because of the cruddy brushes
