I previously tested the performance of this Craftsman CMCF820D2 impact. Now, we’re going to tear it apart to see how it’s made. I'll look at this tool to see if it may be related to the DCF887 brushless DeWalt impact.
Check out my earlier review of this Craftsman impact here: • Review: new Craftsman ...

Upgraded from an older 18v kit. kzbin.infoUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv I independently chose the drill and impact tool, before I came across the kit.I like the 3 speed impact gun. It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.

I had a 20v Craftsman Pro drill and impact driver, uses lithium batteries, they were made in 06 and they still work great till this day. I gave them to my brother and went with Milwaukee because they weighed a ton, but they're still kicking after 13 years. Pretty impressive for cordless tools with original batteries.

When they break or if I need a specialty tool I go to harbor freight because I can't go to the basement of Sears anymore. Harbor freight has some decent ratchets and breaker bars that have a lifetime warranty. Unlike Craftsman I am not a proud owner of harbor freight tools, I am just a owner.

The battery pack appears to use the same Chinese off-brand cells, similar to Black + Decker 20v line. It is worth mentioning hat they also use the same battery management circuitry. For what’s its worth, the new Craftsman line is also compatible with B&D and Porter Cable 20v batteries but need to be modified by removing blocking posts on the packs to allow the pack to attach.

Yeah dude i got this with the brushless hammer drill, somewhere around 3 years ago, i work with them a lot and ive dropped them and the batteries pretty hard, and from tall ladders even, and they still going strong. I used to work with a guy that only got dewalt so I’ve worked extensively with both and honestly there wasnt a notable difference, other than the quarter inch of compactness. Im one of those crazies that extensively compares things too and honestly ive seen Milwaukee’s and Dewalt’s high end brushless drivers crap out with in the time ive had my craftsman’s and not even under heavy use which is exactly what ive put mine thru i mean I used the hammer drill to drill, probably about 150 holes in concrete and brick in 2 days. These drills are a great example of how you need to do your research

Great video. Teardown videos are always fun. Thanks. Looks like SBD made a new battery design for Craftsman. Usually, all the tools from SBD used one of two battery designs, and compatibilities were only blocked by some plastic tabs on the case. But that battery actually has different design. Connectors are placed with wider interval. I think that could mean SBD is putting some good amount of effort on Craftsman lineup.

I know I’m a bit late to the game but I think I can answer a little bit about why the battery is lower quality than the tool itself. In this instance I believe with it being a combo pack of the tool and battery it’s likely the case that the tool was built to a much higher standard as craftsman try’s to improve and meet the standards of there community, where as the battery at overflow and build in bulk from a 3rd party manufacturer. It’s a mixing of new standards and off the shelf parts. Same reason we still get the bags and not much better built cases. They are pushing out old stock and making room for better built products.

I would think those dovetail slots would be more expensive in terms of tooling opposed to through holes. They must save on rubber material with a smaller shot size for it to be worth that extra complexity. Interesting design decision.

You seem like the perfect guy to answer this question. In your opinion, for performance and longevity, would safely removing as much grease as possible, and replacing it with the best available, compatible grease, be a good idea? I've always been a fan of premium lubrication, and a 3 decade user of Amsoil products whenever possible. I never really thought about lube other than for vehicles and trailers. I recently replaced the grease on a 90 tooth ratchet, right out of the box, and used Super Lube. It was simply amazing how much better it was. I have noticed, especially on Chinese made products, they always skimp on the quality of the lube. Even for the more expensive professional grade tools and products. Not sure why a few more pennies would hurt them, but apparently it does.

The Craftsman seems like a good impact, but for similar money I'd choose Milwaukee (preferably), Ridgid or Dewalt, especially right now since they're all on sale for the holidays. They're well established brands that have much larger tool and battery lines. The new, brushless (non-Fuel) Milwaukee impact driver and drill driver combo kit with two 2ah batteries and a Packout case is $199 right now at Home Depot. The impact driver does not have 3 speed settings and is a little less powerful, but it's still a solid performer.

Last winter I bought the three speed brushless impact that Ryobi offered. I believe it’s still their top impact. After using it almost daily throughout this year, I think I’m ready to upgrade. The tool itself is an ample performer and can keep up when put against the big brands; however after using a coworkers dewalt three speed brushless for a period, the difference in quality is quite noticeable. The best way I can describe it is that the dewalt was much more trigger sensitive and refined feeling. It just feels more reactive and solid altogether. That all being said, if you’re on a budget or want to feel like you’re getting a good deal, Ryobi will get you there. I’m going to keep mine as a back up.

I was glad that Stanley\Black&Decker is now making craftsman power tools, to be honest over the years black and decker has offered one of the best products anyone could buy at lowest costs possible and they last almost just as long as some of the other higher priced tools. Dewalt as we all know is top notch equipment. And now craftsman is finally stepping back to some more reliable and expensive tools. Then Lowe’s started selling craftsman tools too it’s hard to be caught at the Home Depot buying Husky junk. Makes me sad I have some nice Husky pro tools from years back that we’re great. What they sale now is not even up to par with what a 6 year old kid gets in a toy tool kit.

Very informative teardown. I expect that these will see frequent markdowns and combo deals similar to Ryobi. The $150 sticker price is really only meant for the poorly informed impulse shopper who walks into the store with a DIY project in mind. For everyone else, the sticker price makes them feel good when they snag one of these for half price during promos that run every 2-3 months. It's a profitable model for HD/Ryobi, so I think SB&D is trying to replicate the same thing with Lowe's/Craftsman. However, it appears that with Craftsman, they've decided to mate high quality tools with cheap batteries. Ryobi currently uses high quality name-brand high-current cells in all their batteries, including the lowly 1.3AH, although this wasn't the case until recently. So I'm surprised/disappointed to see the cheap cells and cheap build quality on the Craftsman batteries. Cheap batteries are good news for SB&D because people will keep coming back for more, but it's bad news for consumers. In the long run, the brand will suffer from a 'unreliable batteries' reputation, something Ryobi has only recently started digging itself out of.

Not surprised by this; Lowes may putting Kobalt in a holding pattern though they have some tools in a new XTR line, which from what I've seen so far seem to be impressive at the sale price point. My guess is that Craftsman will eventually replace the Kobalt max tools, the XTR will become the in house premium brand to compare with more established names; i.e., Milwaukee, Rigid, and others. Still, unless it was sold at a very low price point, I would not purchase it because Lowe's customer service is so poor. I have a Kobalt 24max drill that I cannot get repaired because I cannot get anyone to answer the telephone or respond to emails. See if you can get help at the toll free number for warranty before purchase, then decide if this is the right brand of power tools for you. I've had experience with Stanley/Black and Decker service/warranty, so the Craftsman situation should be okay. My reference above is about the Lowe's house brand Kobalt, just to be clear.

Tool Teardowns fair enough. The biggest problem with the commutator and brushes is wear over time. But torque and power consumption between the 2 is vastly different. Are the batteries over wrapped to hide the manufacturer? Sometimes companies will wrap them to cover the OEM labeling.

Should I buy it? Well if I am using this tool daily in my business, I would say no. Go with the Makita or Milwaukee. If I am using this tool less than daily for my business then yes because it is built well. If I am using this tool as a DIY or homeowner then no because there are cheaper options out there for the occasional use.

It's a rebranded dewalt, so it's plenty good. Better question would be what battery platform do you want to get into? I guess if you want multiple tools it would be a good idea to choose one company so they can all use the same batteries.

$149 for a consumer brand tool I think is a little to much, especially considering the DeWalt isn't much more. This said it almost looks like a clone of the DeWalt where the average user probably won't see any noticable difference in performance, it's not a bad way to save a few dollars. I think this one is hard to call. If I had the money and need, Id buy it. I want to see Stanley Black Decker make Craftsman into something again, so yes.

Considering that the Craftsman impact has cheap, easily broken ABS plastic, the ease of breakage when compared to DeWalts battery case makes the addition year of warranty irrelevant, for me. Having to go through an unnecessary hassle of having to drive to the store or mail in the broken battery just isn’t worth the headache.

I really enjoyed your video, I suspected that Craftsman was a re-branded DeWalt, but I would like to point out one small minor error. DeWALT is not Stanley/Black N Decker's top of the line brand. Its actually Stanley/Back N Decker's 2nd tier brand. Mac Tools is Stanley/Black N Decker's #1 tier "top of line" brand. Here is a link to Mac Tools Impact Driver .....I would be curious if the Mac Impact Driver has the same guts as the Craftsman & DeWalt does. Because a lot of guys would be seriously pissed off if they've spent top dollar for a Mac Impact only to discover that it is the same thing as a Craftsman from Lowe's that cost 1/3 the price. .....Maybe that should be your next video. www.mactools.com/en-us/Power-Tools/Cordless-Tools/MCF886M1D1/20V-MAX-1-4-Hex-Drive-BL-Spec-Brushless-Impact-Driver-Kitr (which has interchangeable batteries with the DeWALT 20V Max system).

to me it's really a close deal. Dewalt is sale on HD for $199, Craftsman for $149. Considering the battery housing material, 18650 battery, warranty length and the main body housing size difference, I don't know, maybe for some professionals those are essential criteria, but as a weekend warrior, I probably go with the new craftsman. Made in USA or China doesn't affect my decision. There are shitty products made in USA and good products made in China, vise versa. As long as they do the job well, I don't care. I'll pick the one has the highest cost-effective ratio. As for the battery, those numbers probably are the production date and week, I guess. It's either Samsung or LG battery. Here is a list for 18650 battery cells, (I didn't make it, but google it out from someone's share drive) drive.google.com/file/d/0B9KXttJ6nbz6VWUtcUtvZEY3dWc/view?usp=sharing
