Hey guys,
Bypass shocks are new to me. So in this video I take you along as I take one of these apart to see exactly how they work.
These are Locked Offroad 2.5" Bypass shocks with 18" travel.
Here is the shared folder if you need anything in there.

Happy New Year!

Very informative vid, I wasn't aware of this bypass technology, I find these bypasses very close to the end of the travel and I don't really understand why… their effect is then much more like hydraulic stoppers ? Interesting. Thank you for sharing, please continue even if you don't have the viewers that you deserve. Happy new year from France !

I agree with you 100%. The bypasses on this shock I think are too far back. I might grind them out at some point and move them farther forward to see how much better that is. Say hello to France for me. Happy New Year.

Man I would of really loved your video a couple years ago! I basically did the same testing as you and completely took mine apart. I tuned my old 2.5x16" smoothies on the rear and 2.5x8" coilovers on the front with different valve stacks, mixing shims and using flutters. That was a learning big curve too, but I had to learn how bypasses worked the same way you did it. I also have locked off road 2.5x16" bypasses on my rear now. They are close enough to me I can just call him and we met up in person lol. I have one of their first batch of bumps they sold as a company all around. Such a great company.

The oil goes through the bypasses until the flow in the orifice reaches the speed of sound (in the oil) then it doesn't allow oil through any faster no matter how much pressure builds up. Once the bypasses saturate and causes pressure to build up the oil is forced through the valve body and its shim stacks

I also worked out a way 1 spring could b used & reused factory setup lift to 6" range by hving birches allow extra spring to b turned into birch location. Nice thing about this is u don't need a new spring in lift kits any more just unturn the extra spring below birch back up into use range. Back to teeter totter set up this give every1 a TRUE dual rate spring bc 2 diff springs even in from factory basic 2" lift set up. Best poss ride quality is had by adjustment on shock hopeful from dash where u actually will use it & hving 2 diff TRUE dual rate springs.

Has any1 made a double allen lock nut U seat the small allen into main allen just as a keeper lock so u don't hve to kill the nut down tight or more important coming off. They get used in smaller sizes on engines & stripping or breaking small nuts can happen. So if they make them 2 in 1 no need to crank! down on them to fasten.

Once u lift it hving proper geometry & easy of bolting on separates good lifts from bad lifts. That & if right springs for med or high lift included or not. U will want bypass shocks if going high lift & worth the bucks. Race cars don't hve bypass shocks bc no lift range of travel but they do like struts in racing on streets bc space saver small package & longer life fatter than just shocks. 1 way to hve extra life is more oil fatter strut type & other is just a reserve life on the side. We hve tones of racing street tech or strut tech & choices but not nearly so for off-roading till last 10yrs. U don't hve to go coil over in long travel but most do bc that is where racing tech went, but for ppl not wanting racing tech HIT price wise springs r cheap. Budget high lift system not coli over TRUE dual rate spring set up is just hve 2 longer springs diff rates & spend the money instead on the magic 3,5, 7 bypass shocks. Springs & b4 that leaf springs r cheap & don't wear out bad. Shocks not cheap after factory replacement & do wear out quick 40k max normal driving struts seem to go 60k mileage 50% longer wear mayb bc shorter travel but for sure fatter product. Most ppl would do best price wise running 2 shocks 1st widder shocks w/reserve life & adjustment. 3rd pay up for 3.0/3.3 diameter shocks & 4th racing hardest trail bite the bullet & just pay up costliest best they hve got to fit your ht set up & car or jeep /truck. Only exception is trucks will b worth air bag or shock adjustable by air or 1 oil shock not loaded & 1 air shock as needed for load. Racing street can't beat a strut & bc most cars run on streets not that price mass produced products running even on req cars & SUVs/crossovers that don't go off road much.

Since I simply HATE Allen bolts, and you perfectly showed why (where they are new and still almost striped). I always change all of them I can, to Torx. In the future, when they get stuck, the worst thing one will snap is the tool/bit, and not the bolt. I strongly advise to do the same. Future proofing. You could actually put a short rebound bumpstop inside the damper to change the solid stop from infinite to progressive. Saves shocks, rosejoints, etc. The piston shims are for high-speed dampening. The bypasses for low-speed dampening/landing after a jump.
@DougBugBuilder
@DougBugBuilder 3 жыл бұрын
I'll tell you that last one was right on the edge of stripping. Getting that out of there and not damaging the shaft would have been tough. The torx are a great idea. I'll see if I can order some up. I plan to have the bypasses installed with pneumatic 4" bumps next to it. So hopefully that will soften the blows. Although I'm a little worried the bumps will hit before the bypass tubes are covered. But I'll tackle that when I get there.

So this has 3 bypasses & they make 5 & even 7 highest end. Diff between no bypass & 3 or more is the speed of the rebound. Diff video shocks (even fox brand for off-roading) normal road driving hve 5,10,or 15 response cycle rate. Off-roading just not fast enough. Most basic lift setups max out at 2.5" body bc they just can't push back enough. Travel length & reserve life diff problem/deal then responds speed. Depending on type of car truck some hve separate coil from shock some hve strut & some coil over. Bigger lift ppl go to longer springs but coil ppl max lift end up using 2 springs coilovers & that allows 2 diff rates of spring, nice. But for shocks hving enough push back 3.0 & right length & poss extra life/cooling doesn't mean fast enough responds & that is the bypass deal.

@DougBugBuilder
@DougBugBuilder 3 жыл бұрын
I thought that would be a real problem. But surprisingly when I took them apart minimal fluid came out. Not to say I didn't get some air in there. But when I put them back together I set them real loose, then cycle by hand. I don't really hear any air getting pushed around. Then I tilt them around to let the air collect in the bypass body, then tilt it so the reservoir hose is the high spot. Then crack the hose connection a little to let any air out. But all I got was oil, so who knows if that works. Good luck. 👍

Is there any way to purge any air out of the hydraulic side of the shock? The bypass tubes being ported to the shock body so far up seems to act somewhat like a bump stop. Ported so far up the body allows them to work over the majority of the travel? It would be interesting to try more bypasses like you mentioned. How thick is the outer shock wall? If it’s thick enough, maybe you’d be able to spot face the tube and TIG weld another bypass or two on. Machine a chunk of brass to fit snug in the shock tube and position it in the weld area to act as a heat sink during welding?
@DougBugBuilder
@DougBugBuilder 3 жыл бұрын
Purging air will be tricky. I think I'll cycle the shock to push any air out of the bypasses then let the air rise to the top. Then "burp" it out of the fitting where the hose connects the reservoir to the shock body. I think once Wratchet is on the road and I'm dialing in the suspension you'll see me experiment with moving some of the bypasses around exactly like you are describing. There's enough meat there to do some welding. Great ideas you have BTW.
@rickrack78
@rickrack78 3 жыл бұрын
@@DougBugBuilder, there has to be some way to purge the air out of the hydraulic side, or else the fluid gets aerated and viscosity goes nuts. So hving better picture NOW how springs & shocks work & why bump stops rubber or air. Just buy 2 cheap 2.0 shocks for price vs going up the cost curve or some rigs like defender hving 2 springs or shocks from factory not a bad deal/way to go. Easy of bolting on aside cost for most ppl is bigger factor than easy of bolting on. Where the just mount 2 shocks go bigger & higher up the cost curve won't work is< the responds time>.
