Being that Cindy and I will be attending the final Nitto JK-Experience presented by KMC Wheels, we decided it might be a good idea to take Moby down to Off Road Evolution and to have his King coilovers and bypass shocks serviced. If time permitted, we were also hoping to have a little custom work done as well and specifically, to stretch his rear end by about 2". According to Mel, this would allow us to get rid of our rear bump stop extensions as that would provide us with a LOT more up travel - about 4" more! In other words, we would be able to hit much big bumps and at significantly higher speeds.
Now, what we weren't expecting from our visit was to find just how much wear and tear we've put on our Jeep JK Wrangler over the last 12 years and worse, how much we've been neglecting or at least, in terms of maintenance. In this short video, you'll get to see and learn a bit about coilovers, bypass shocks and what goes into getting them serviced and you'll even get to see some of the work we had done on Moby to get him ready for the JKX. We hope you enjoy.

Cool to see his daughter back there as well, and knowledgeable! Good for the both of them! I hope there’s a part 2 to this video! I wanna see exactly what they did to that rear end. It looks like the coil overs are mounted up top now and not straight up and down which is interesting. I’d like to see the added flex as well. EVO does some sick work. After seeing all of these videos of them it makes me want to get an entire Evo suspension for my JK.
@wayalife
@wayalife 4 жыл бұрын
There is a part 2 but it covers different things we needed to get done before the JKX. What you see in the rear end is what we've had for the last 10 years and that's the EVO Lever System. It's a cantilever suspension setup that EVO does. Flex is the same as before, we just now can hit much bigger bumps at a higher rate of speed.

I really like the way Evo works on rigs; looks like a very competent and professional shop. My TJ is due, maybe overdue, for similar work. I've been running an Nth Degree 6" long arm lift for 12 years, and have yet to do any major service to the suspension. I've done the typical lube and check stuff to make sure the rig is up to snuff, but not a tear down of the entire suspension. Unfortunately many shops are afraid of working on Nth Degree, even though it's pretty straight forward. I have what Mel calls throw away shocks on my rig, but they still feel okay. Although I've been thinking lately it would probably be good to replace (throw) them away as a precaution. lol

Mel's shop and knowledge is just world class and seeing him pass that onto the next generation is awesome. Learnt a lot about how bypass shocks operate. Why aren't they nitro charged to counter oil viscosity?
@wayalife
@wayalife 4 жыл бұрын
Did you mean to say charged with nitrogen to help prevent cavatation? On a remote reservoir shock, nitrogen is used but in a separate chamber separated by an internal floating piston. The pressure does a much better job of doing this.

SO call me anything you want but does the heim joint get bolted to the pitman arm and to the knuckles? I't looks like just some bolts and nuts? PLease elaborate on that setup or did you ever have a video about it in thr past??

@@wayalife yeah I'm aware of the pro rock 60 just didn't get the whole connection with the heim joint. Being new to it all I just hadn't seen that before. Could that type of setup be utilized on a stock jku Rubicon?? Mine is a 2014

Wow...I have 50K miles on my Double Throwdown so I'm guessing I need a rebuild. I don't really notice a ride difference from 13K versus 50K. However I'm a rock crawler and not a desert racer. Can you share the cost to do this?

So those type of shocks need to be rebuilt every year ? That seems like a major expense to have them. That wouldn't be a good thing to have on a every day driver.

Well technically, you don't have to do anything but if you want them to perform as well as they did when they were new, yes, getting them rebuilt every year is something you should be doing. If you think about it, there are a lot of things you have to maintain on a regular basis like your engine oil and tires.
