I learned that if the person on the phone was truly an expert, that person would be working in the field making the big bucks. I've seen EXV on Carrier chillers fail numerous times. I went to Carrier Chiller School in Orlando years ago and their expert instructors would not have qualified as competent field technicians, at all.

I have a difficult time putting a price to these repairs. I constantly forget about my nitrogen, 15% silver brazing rods, etc. which all add up. It's hard to give the customer a total without wincing. Times are tough and people are hurting. I guess the saving grace is that I know that the job is done right and worth the money. Nice job Curtis!

Consider what the auto shops do: charge a "consumables fee." For them it covers parts cleaning solvents, rust and corrosion penetrants, shop towels, reassembly lubricants, etc. For an HVAC tech, it would be nitrogen and brazing gases, incremental use of devices with limited life spans (leak detector elements, for ex), brazing rods, zip ties, heat compounds, sheet metal screws... anything you find yourself buying that isn't charged directly to a job is a candidate. Consider something like "cost accounting for dummies" to help you find where your money goes out, so you can find ethical ways to recover those expenses.
@jthonn Жыл бұрын
You don't really have to charge an extra fee for that if you make it up in the initial pricing. It saves the argument of the customer saying, "what is this charge for". There is the cost of doing business.@@raygunsforronnie847

I wonder why they design these with so many circuit boards outside, thats always seemed like a bad idea to me. The boards should be on the inside unit and the signal/electrical wiring could just be ran out to the unit, keeping all that stuff protected but im not an expert.

You mentioned (10:46) you measured one of stepper motor winding open. Likely just a stepper coil replacement but sometimes the PCB board stepper motor driver can short out continuously pushing current through stepper motor coil burning it out. That is why tech support recommends changing PCB along with EEV coil. If PCB board driver is shorted, by the time you figure out it is still not working with new stepper coil it will have likely burned out the new stepper motor coil.

I had nearly the same problem on a 180 ton McQuay magnetic bearing chiller about ten years ago. It was locking out on low suction and had a sight glass at the EXV. I told my supervisor that the valve wasn't opening and, being still under warranty, the contractor sent a factory authorized service tech. He hooked up his laptop and spent hours on the phone with the factory before declaring it probably need a new actuator. He said they never go bad. So, it took two days before the facility, with about 500 occupants, in 100 degree weather, to get the part and five minutes to fix it.

Amazing how tech support guys seem to be focused on boards and computer chips when things like valves stuck can be the actaul culprit that's like saying to use car language it's impossible for an air tempeture sensor to go bad or an oxygen sensor. And curtis I noticed as soon as you replaced electronic expansion valve and started the Condenser back up. How much quieter the compressor got before it sounded horrible. With an annoying buzz. And also I noticed once you started the charge and got it close how much condensation surged out of the drain line from the air handler. Again a fine example of an actaul hvac person who actually works on the equipment might know more than the 10 dollar an hour tech guy who just sits behind a desk with a computer with no knowledge except a spec sheet. Sometimes it really is as simple as the light bulb went bad.
@key-sendo Жыл бұрын
to be fair I have never seen an eev like that go bad. I have however, seen those trane temp sensors go bad several times. So it isn't unusual for them to want you to try the easy stuff first, but still they need to realize that it is not impossible for an eev to go bad.

Stop using those Appion hoses and use the dual Trublu hoses and it will pull way deeper. That Fieldpiece will rip it down or you are doing something wrong. You might have to do it a second time, but you should be able to get under 200 in no time. There is no reason you can't get that low. I don't have these problems, but I also don't know what condition your vacuum oil is and which brand you use. They do make a difference in moisture level and how effective they are.
@Bryr2112 Жыл бұрын
depending on the amount a wires you usually go from the first wire to all the other ones. The resistance should all be the same, if not then the eev coil is no good. they sell special magnets that u can put on the eev to manually open them to.

No. On these the magnetism rotates in little triangles to slowly turn a magnetized screw inside. They call it a stepper motor. And those test magnets are just circular magnets. Wouldn’t work

You have to do what it takes to get the fix. Three hours was more than fair, tech support messed you up too. You have to charge enough to make a profit to stay in business. I use to really like Trane and american standard, but after seeing this, I don't know anymore. I'm not a fan of heat pumps to start with, even though they seem a little better now days. Watching all the different repairs you do, it seems that the Reem units are some of the good ones. The dang engineers are doing things that make no sense at all to me. They need to take these engineers out in the field to work with you guys a year or two before they get their cushy jobs.
@craigbraswell4269 Жыл бұрын
I used to like a few brands, before the EPA and seer ratings of 14 became standard. Seems like nobody makes a "great" quality unit these days... its a good thing manufacturers give 10 year part warranties with their equipment because you're gonna need it.
@raygunsforronnie847 Жыл бұрын
It's not the engineers who need to be out in the field, it's the accountants and upper management. Remember that companies are in business to make money; in this case they build HVAC equipment to make money. Engineers already know how to make things last, how to make them easily serviced, and then the sharp pencil of death is applied.

I don’t get why a tech would ever use a press fitting. I think you’re a great tech Curtis and you do excellent work but I will never be on board with these garbage press fittings. I’ve been brazing for over 20 years and I trust my welds 100 percent. I can’t say the same about an o-ring. It doesn’t take much time or effort to set up a nitrogen tank and flow it while brazing. In fact you still had to flow it and use your torch to remove the valve and braze a couple of the joints. If you still have to get the nitrogen and your torch off the truck, how much time was really saved? Not to mention the outrageous price of the tool and the fittings. Brazing is a skill and I really enjoy it. I will never use a press fitting but to each his own.
