Good info fellas! Idk I have mixed reviews just from my experiences. I've heard alot of bad things about precision, yet still see it on high level cars. Yet I've had nothing but good luck with Garrett. No BOV for 20 events and still going strong... the way I see it is coming from aviation Garrett engineers turbjet/turbo prop/turbo shaft engines. So... they've got to be doing something right. Lol

I would have thought that an expert in turbos would know that closed throttle flutter is not the same as open throttle compressor surge. While similar to compressor surge, turbo flutter doesn't occur while the turbine is loaded (exhaust spinning the hot side of the turbo). It should not be referenced as “surge”. There is negligible affect or any documented or observed damage to bearings or wheels as a result of no-BOV off throttle flutter, or the “sututututu” noise you hear when throttle is closed. It’s a myth. Real compressor surge under open throttle load however, is known, observed and well documented to be potentially catastrophic. You should know the difference.

@exploranator2 жыл бұрын
Regarding: a heavier turbo shaft makes a measurable, noticeable, and significant difference based on its mass. The difference is the bearing diameter, especially in an oil film bearing. THAT will cause more drag at all times due to bigger shaft size, but something adding 1-2mm of diameter on a 70mm turbo wheel is insignificant for polar moment. I just don't think Borg-Warner prioritizes performance versus permanent longevity, and that means a more robust construction, which leads to heavier overall internals, but I don't think the shaft itself is the MASS or INERTIA issue. A Borg-Warner turbo is for life.

Problem is, it is all a "pi..ing" contest in regards to compressor inducer diameter. Just go way too big on volute volume in compressor housing, and you win top end power - which for some is performance. BUT that does not make for a great turbo if spool-up is sacrificed for harvesting most out of a wheel diameter. Same principle for harvesting most out of 1.5L engine when in fact you are allowed to go 3.0L. Same for compressor wheels, and when configured correct in regards to volute volume, exducer, depth etc. bigger comp. inducer wheels actually can perform quicker spool-up as the "package" is designed correctly not only for top-end power. Bigger comp. inducer moves more air per rotation, and hence requires less shaft rpm for same flow inside the compressor. Forget the marketing race/piss..g contest of inducer diameters, and focus on the application instead

There is no such thing as "cavitation" when dealing entirely with a gas environment. "Cavitation" is when a liquid has an artificial gas cavity along its tip or trailing edge due to pressure going below vaporization temperature. Aeration is when a body doing through a liquid entrains air from the surface or other source. However, it is interesting, the concept of too many blades leading to less high-speed air grabbing by the compressor wheel. Too many blades passing by the same point in space, you are saying, find they can't grab as much air as fewer blades, due to the air not having an opportunity to "fall" into the space between blades, because there is just too many of them. That is an astute and fascinating observation, and one I have never heard anyone on any channel or manufacturer's site even discuss. Kudos for REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE trumping theory and sales hype. Let's go to the extreme: supposing the compressor had 100 blades. NOW when will the air have an opportunity to fall into the space between blades? Advantage: turbo with fewer blades.

Pretty bias. I have experience tuning BW Garrett and precision turbos. They are all fine. Saying borgs are lazy is blatantly wrong. We've been able to get comparable spool for same pwoer levels on journal SXE borgs, vs even BB GTX turbos. Precision are pretty good but I don't like not having a compressor map to plot against a build. Not to mention empirically proven, EFRs are the absolute fastest transient (what matters in drift or circuit racing) responding turbos. If people aren't aware check out borgs matchbot to help plot your build to see what turbo fits. Of course turbos function in their efficiency range. You don't actually know precisions efficiency range, because they don't have compressor maps. Precision is fine. They had some rough history to repair when garrett stropped provided them CHRAs. You said Borgs are lazy spooling, but the EFR is empirically proven the fastest transient responding turbo on the market (of course vs whatever power application). All 3 brands are fine, your representation of the 3 brands is pretty bias. Everyone has their favorites. Garrett and Borg are tried and true and industry innovators. Borg especially. Hence see EFR used as indy series turbos.

The marketing managers only wants the hype for top-end power, just look at Garrett, suddenly the Marketing department changed the conversion factor from lbs/min flow to HP overnight dramatically upwards with the G-series. Even their distributors informs about it. It is a laugh. E.g. now a 56mm turbine exducer should do 900hp according to Garrett! (example G-30-900). Think about it .... little over a 2' pipe with 9 blades inside should flow 900hp in the exhaust. Why would anyone with a race engine attempt or claim that even with NASA rocket fuel!?! AND even the compressor wheels are mapped inside way too big volute volume compressor (large frame) housings, and then pictured and sold with normal sized housings afterwards. It is becoming same circus as the VAG emission fraud. It is all marketing to compete on the diameters which is only a factor for the marketing department, not the race teams! People who do not understand turbos, eat all the fancy headlines and "performance" punch-lines raw
