I used to call it "Tomp Rider"because English isn't my first language and I didn't know any better when I was young. Tomb Raider 2 was my first PS1 game and it's still my favorite of the series.

Techdweeb your video made me cry a little. A month ago my dad passed away and your video reminded me memories of my dad playing tomb raiders,2 and 3. I used watch him play for hours and he showed me all the secrets, weapons and enemies. He even let me fight the final bosses because I couldn’t reach there myself. Thank you Techdweeb for this awesome video.

@@TechDweeb my dad was a musician and a gamer. He played music in japan and at home got me into video games. I’ll share one more memory. When I was in elementary school I got sick and stayed home and I had a fever. My dad told me to get ready to go out and he made me ride my bike with him to the Japanese mall in japan it was 45 minutes bike ride. He bought me a N64 and super mario 64 and I had to carry everything and ride my bike home with him. By the time I got home my fever was gone and I felt a lot better and my dad got in trouble with mom for making me do that with him 😂 One of the best memories I have my dad. Thanks for reading Techdweeb. You ever come to DFW tx you got a friend here!

I played this on Sega Saturn. Beat the whole darn thing. It was a wondrous and awe-inspiring experience for my 13yo brain. The scope and scale of adventure was beyond anything I'd seen before. Dad had just left, and it was also the only game my mom enjoyed watching me play, lol. Memories. ❤

This was THE VERY FIRST 3D GAME I PLAYED already with 26 years old. I was mindblowed with the possibilitie of looking in any direction on that 3D world. And only years later I learned that taking a step back was what was needed to make the jump. I played the whole game trying to syncronize the steps to the jumps failing miserably. And I always loved the fact that the puzzles seemed like a battle between my cunning and the developers imagination. Nothing like today where the game tells us what to do so we don't have to think much. Loved the video. Took me far back to better days. Thanks.

I mostly played video games in the arcades in the '80s. By the '90s I was deep into desktop publishing and graphic design on the Macintosh until Corel Draw was released for the PC and suddenly EVERYBODY was a "graphic designer." But I did play Myst on the Mac and Doom on the PC. When Tomb Raider came out it was all anyone could talk about. It was clearly a next-level video game, with a female protagonist for the first time. It was a sensation. By this time I didn't have a PC anymore but I really appreciated the movies and I really enjoyed this playthrough!

Yeah, this was pretty much my first proper 3D exploration game. I remember buying this for my Saturn after seeing it on display on a demo machine at my local game store. I was crazy impressed with what I saw. Snatched it up... and played it like a lunatic. Seriously one of my favorite revolutionary gaming memories. It is sort of amusing that it originally was programmed/planned for the Saturn, since the Saturn wasn't known for being the best with 3D polygons. All in all, that game played just fine on the Saturn... thankfully! lol I even "sold" several copies of that game after friends were over and saw me playing it. "Holy crap! This game is amazing!" lol Everyone ran out and bought their own copies. ;-) Fun memories.

People don't quite realize what sort of hype was generated after Tomb Raider came out, everyone lost their shit over it. I still remember it clearly. Spawned a genre pretty much, and hell to date, it's the only reason we have Drakan, which was just basically hot chick + dragon. I still remember how wow'd I was myself launching this on my pc, and pressing one of the F buttons (possibly F3) to change the resolution from low res to high res and marveling at how much better it look (and how much more worse it ran). I still also remember getting my Voodoo 2 and running Tomb Raider in glide for the first time. Friggin glorious. It was one of the reason that even though I had a PS1 I pretty much stuck with PC. 3D acceleration was an absolute game changer for me and it hasn't been till recently that I've grown somewhat nostalgic for the software rendering of those days... Anyway, highly recommended Tomb Raider, esp if you nab it via the 1/2/3 Remastered version that just released recently. Lots of quality of life improvements including proper analog controls.

For the the people who aren't familiar with the series, it's worth noting that Tomb Raider I-III Remastered is the best way to play these games now: being a true remaster of the original trilogy in that the games play exactly as the originals do, with some QoL options and some improved graphics (especially Lara's character model). On the other hand, Tomb Raider Anniversary is NOT a remaster. It is a remake with very, very different mechanics and stages- only sharing the story and setting of the original game. It is also a fantastic game in its own right, but it is a radically different game than Tomb Raider I. I absolutely love the original series- there's nothing else like it! It's very much a puzzle platformer, in the sense that figuring out how to explore the areas can be as much of a challenge as solving the puzzles within them.

Speaking on the controls. The best way I ever explain how Laura controls is by comparing it to games like og prince of Persia, another world, flashback, or the ps1 oddworld games but if those games were 3D platformers instead of side scroller. That weird momentum movement
