Good point about reading the manual. I've found when getting back into these games that reading the manual is often mandatory. All the newer games generally have a tutorial or other handholding. Anytime I play something retro I didn't play as a kid, I'm totally like "what the heck am I doing?" because the games I actually played before...I read the manual back then! Thankfully scans of manuals are all over the place online.

I played this back in the late 90s when I was in high school. My first TTPRG was Shadowrun, and I was excited to find out there were video games. The SNES version was fun but very different than the tabletop experience, but I found that the Genesis one was impressively close for its time. I remember beating it twice, once as the samurai and once as the shaman. Probably gonna try to do a decker run soon thanks to this video.

Both are very different. The SNES version plays like a point and click CRPG, while the Genesis version is more of an action RPG. The Genesis version is more difficult to get into because there are some systems you need to learn (but also rewarding when you figure them out). I suggest you play both for 30 min and see which one you end up preferring!

Had this game with my Nomad and never passed it. I was to the point where I had the implants to make my gun skills crazy where I could one shot anyone. I put way too much towards that and not enough into hacking skills so I might have been stuck. I sold it later, game was mint because I only read the manual once and it had one of those Genesis clam shells. I might try it again, I think it was a little more advanced than a Dragon Quest or a Final Fantasy and as a kid I couldn't get far in it.

Back when you had a manual and it told you how to play. It's a big reason most people playing NES, Genesis, GB and SNES have issues with so many games. Read the manual and suddenly you know how to play, or how to defeat a boss, or learn there's a map.
