Image stabilization for photography and video is such a hot topic right now. Camera and lens manufacturers are racing to provide the sharpest and most stable results. But do you actually need image stabilization? And can you tell the difference?
I’ll talk about the different reasons why your footage and images may not be as sharp as you want them to be. We’ll talk about the different types of image stabilization and finally what image stabilization can and can’t do.
Finally, I’d love to know what you think. What kind of stabilization do you use (or want to use) and how it’s working out for you.

Ever since I bought a camera with IBIS, I want this system in my cameras. Remember - it's optional too. I can switch it off completely, if I want to. But going in the streets after sunset with my camera, shooting at 1/2 second shutter and getting like 80% of shots perfectly sharp - once you realize this thing EXIST, it's not easy to give it up. And what I love about it, that my small, prime lenses get the benefit too. When you combine f/1.8 or faster with 1/2 seconds or even slower, trust me, I shoot in pitch dark and still get amazing results.

I wish we could like more than once! Loved this video. Super informative, technical (well, tech gear talk, what do you expect? - me talking to myself lol), and you throw a few super duper tips, like the one about photography... the rule of thumbs.... in my humble opinion I think IBIS would be better, cause yes! Stabilized lenses are EXPENSIVE. I think it also depends on what do we want to express in a particular situation. The important thing is to watch your videos and get as much info as we can and try and experiment, and see the results, but it’s important to know, or at least to have an idea of what will happen when we do this or that. Thanks so much for sharing, man 🙏👊🙏

This was a great video. I have a question related to cross brand lenses working with Panasonic. It's my understanding that the Olympus 45mm 1.8 does not work well with the Panasonic in body stabilization for video. Have you had this same experience? Obviously this is not the case for the Panasonic stabilized 42.5mm lens but I'm wondering about the experience with the Olympus lens. Thank you.

I'm torn (kind of) between the canon 10-18 mm lens with image stabilization but with f/4.5 and 10-22 mm lens but without image stabilization with f/3.5. I dont know if you are familiar with the two lenses but in your opinion, which lens should be better? Thank youuu

Great video, explained everything very clearly! Would love to see more education tech talk like this! I'm mostly familiar with Nikon's VR and Sigma's OS. I can't tell much of a difference because in a lot of cases where I've needed to shoot slower than 1/80(my personal preference to eliminate any possible hand shake on optimal shots) I'll normally just use my tripod or its detachable monopod to help stabilize the camera. Steeletraining had a cool video where he shows you how to use your strap as a stabilizer, so in a pinch I'll sometimes brace my camera with the strap off my neck or knee. The only time I've really noticed it was when I was hiking to get some waterfall photos and with my Sigma 17-50 2.8 with OS, I was able to handheld shoot at almost 1 second to get a nice smooth waterfall image, so I know it worked when I needed it to! With Nikon's VR I'm not so sure, I have the AF-P 70-300mm non VR and AF-S 55-300 with VR and I honestly can't tell the difference when I'm out shooting birds or the moon with it.
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 4 жыл бұрын
That's good feedback - I have a lot more educational stuff coming! Whoa... 1 second handheld is skill! Interesting that you can't tell the difference with the longer zoom. You could try to set it to 300, handhold it for video for 10 seconds trying to keep it still. Then do the same with the other lens and compare

When shooting video does the lens stabilization "stack" on top of the IBIS? Will spending the extra money for a prime with stabilization help me shoot steadier footage in low light like inside a motorcycle garage etcetera? Say a Sony A7iii with a 35mm 1.8 with stabilization or a similar lens that doesn't have the stabilization. Is the extra stabilization worth the money if I already have IBIS? Just subscribed. Great videos BTW!

Hi, Tech Gear Talk! A a great, and very informative talk on the different types of camera stabilization, sadly due to the fact I am getting older now, I have developed slightly shaky hands? or excuse the pun, a slightly in-body tremor!?!? whatever it is I am getting far too many blurry handheld images these days! So the realization is I will have to return to a camera with IBIS! I don't shoot video, just stills, so in that case would you agree that I need a camera with IBIS and not with IBDS? Thank you for your reply.

Hi, can lens stabilisation, camera sensor and digital stabilisation be too much stabilisation, essentially stabilisers fighting against each other and cause images to not be sharp? Today I went out in sunny summer weather to test the animal auto focus etc in my new Canon R6. I used my Canon EF 70-200 f2.8L IS III (which is less than a year old and I know to be razor sharp). All stabilisation setting turned on (sensor, digital and lens) and my experience shooting was great with animal eye auto focus locking on perfectly, however, now I’m home and looking at the images on my laptop screen, they don’t look as sharp as I expected, or as sharp as I would expect my old Canon 77D cropped sensor to be. Is there such a thing as too much stabilisation? What are your thoughts?

Great & knowledgeable video, this channel deserves at least a million subscribers. I came across your video, searching a mirrorless camera with stabilization as good as my Go pro Hero8, but after seeing quite a few vlogs on cameras, I don't think there is one under $1k. I have shooting all my channel's videos on Go Pro and Mavic Air and the stabilization and 4k quality is tops but this summer i wanted to shoot some night skies time lapse footage hence, started to look for a mirrorless camera. I'm still not sure if I should invest in these cameras just to catch some night time stuff if I can not us it for my entire travel (talking to the lens while walking or climbing). Any advise you can give?

You propose an interesting question of what stabilization methods were used in some sample footage. It would be nice to see the answers at the end to see if we were right or not. For me, debating on getting a more advanced expensive camera with image stabilization or buy a decent, more entry level camera and buy a gimbal. Convenience may go to the more expensive camera option but the hassle of a gimbal may still produce a more steady image than a camera with image stabilization, am I right?

Do you need it? Only for certain types of shooting and certain situations I'd say. Lower light and/or long lenses. I think when it comes to long lenses at slow(er) shutter speeds you can tell the differneces, but for those who are shooting in bright light where you can observe the minimum shutter speed rule for example, then you don't. But it's also one of those things that I personally would like to have available, even if I don't always use it -- it's there if I need it. For example, in good light, I may be shooting travel photography at shutter speed likes 1/100s or faster that can be done handheld and where IS (in body or in-lens) may not be of any real benefit or make a difference. So if anything you have to look at what types of shooting you do and the conditions. If you mostly shoot landscapes on a tripod, then you can probably get away without IS. But if you're a sports shooter or you shoot concerts or other low-light/long lens applications, then you may want to consider getting a camera/lens with stabilization.

Tech Gear Talk I have an old NEX6 that I’ve been using for years. I recently bought a replacement control wheel and installed it back like new and bought a Sigma 30mm f1.4 for family portraits and general fun. I have a few other apsc lenses. I like apsc for portability and such but might buy an a7iii after the a7iv is announced, for family portraits and local photos, keep the NEX6 for travel.

The only issue with the a7iii is the price of the lenses. There are some third party options

Tech Gear Talk yeah I only shoot occasionally. Most photos are with my phone but I want some better photos for the growing family. If I buy a FF I’ll probably only buy a Sigma/Tamron zoom in the 24-70 range for general photos and a prime 50-85 for portraits.

Some kind of stabilisation is neccesary for video making.
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for the feedback. Stabilization is useful for video IF there is camera movement. I believe I mention this in the video - if I ever move the camera, it's on a slider or a gimbal. No image stabilization in a mirrorless, dslr or a lens is going to do as good a job as a gimbal (at least not yet). Hope that helps clear my position.

@@TechGearTalk would u recommend buying a gimbal if my main segment is food-vlogging where I use a lot of slow motion etc.? I mostly move camera towards the end result (ready meal) or in the process of cooking, however close to the subject... considering buying Canon SL2 now, to finally replace the iPhone, for better video quality. But the image stabilization is my concern still...

Yup, the GH5 has amazing IBIS. I would still use a gimbal instead and I value autofocus over IBIS (for what I do). Let me know when you get it!
