The thing with the blue checkmark was, as mentioned, a dumpster fire. What I thought they were originally doing was going to force existing verified accounts to have to have Twitter blue in order to keep your checkmark. To me, that made sense, but giving it to everyone that has Twitter blue regardless of verification was just stupid long-term.

Charging for verification made even less sense. Part of twitter's appeal is that there are famous people on it (it's stupid, but that gets people on apparently). If they tried to charge for blue the famous people would all just leave. Besides notables, what else has twitter got? It's just tumblr with a character limit.

The Christchurch Call resulted in an industry wide code (which Apple, Google and Twitter are a part of), updates to US Federal Laws (which the FTC must enforce) and multiple International Agreements that require content be moderated to protect users from violent abuse, criminal or terrorist activities. If Twitter refuses moderation, its basically Ad-apocalypse 2.0, and there will be international/federal/corporate pressure demanding Musk's compliance, or Twitter's removal.

I got banned from Twitter for telling the KZbin comment bot to go kill itself. I challenged it, explaining that the bot wasn't a human so couldn't be harassed: I got my account back within hours and they apologized. I was amazed. I'm guessing that would take about 10 years for a review now since there's no one working there anymore.

I had something similar happen not to long ago. I was talking about death stranding and somehow got flagged by a bot. I also refused to delete the post and appealed the suspension. Took more than a week to fix. Like you I got used to not using twitter so I kinda stopped using it. Haven't deleted my account incase I want to go back but it's honestly just too toxic of a place.

I feel like, the whole question of "free speech" on Twitter was rendered mute, when Elon banned unlabeled parody. If I remember right, when I signed up on Twitter, you had to prove you were who you said you were, ie; 'verified'. So at some point you could just sign up dozens or hundreds of bots. When did that change I wonder. When I discovered that, most of the stuff I was getting on my "feed" was people's answers, with no context, I kind of stopped bothering to sign in. At least on Facebook you see were the conversation started.

Using "Kill" followed by "You" 100% should lead to temporary suspension. This kind of language is still near impossible for bots to pick up the sarcasm in and It costs money for a human to review. With that said Elon could make a swear jar system. 10$ charge every time a human has to review your comments for sarcasm. 20$ if comment is meant to be offensive.

Riley gave a good explanation of the cost of the bots...Elon has said the goal is to prevent anyone from influencing so cheaply. So yes while nation states/very rich brands could still create bots however it becomes exponentially more expensive. As James said he ultimately wants it to be a "public square" but more importantly he wants users to trust the other users on the platform. He did state twitters policy on content moderation has not changed.

Twitter used to be hugely community driven. Jump into a conversation and boom you're in the jailbreaking circle, or movie circle, etc. I honestly think the big brand and celebrity presence has hurt twitter more than anything else. Individuals that you can easily reach out to was a big part of it.

The other thing that I think hurt Twitter was the need to optimize everything for maximum engagement. It tries to determine someone’s biggest interests, and once it does that, it only serves those things to you. That’s the problem that Twitter, Facebook, and to some degree KZbin all have. They have to keep you doing something because otherwise they can’t make money from you.

They need to get rid of Twitter Blue the name and change it to Twitter Gold and give the paid sub a gold check while keeping the blue check as verified account exclusive. I'd even be ok with a one time or even yearly payment to cover staffing for verification. I'd also get rid of most, if not all of the perks from the blue verified check.
