I think this is the best designed phone of the year. I'm a little bothered by notches, holes and pills in my display. I don't like cut outs at all. I'm much happier with thin bezels than anything else
@vhyles

Most people gobbled up the punchhole trend because every single company and their mother jumped in Apple's wagon. Such sheep... I can never imagine how come someone watch a video with a whole in their screen...

Yeah, for me as the name 'punch hole' suggests - the hole triggers me to punch the phone screen.

@I love you but - No, Sony think differently. The cheapest new Sony phone you can find today is Sony L4, and guess what? It has cutout. And we totally agree with Sony, cutout just fits perfectly on cheap looking phone.

@I love you but Sony phones have 84%+ screen to body ratio wtf are you talking about, that's as thin as you can get. Every sane person will prefer that instead of a ugly hole in the screen. You = 🐑

After having and using the SONY Xperia 1 mark ii for almost a year now I can say that the camera system is as good as any other. It's just different. As he points out in the video it is a lot more like using an actual camera. Thus there is a learning curve, and you need to be willing to figure it out. But it sure is fun and allows for more creativity. If what you want are very saturated pictures and you want the phone to do all the work for you then I would say that the Xperia is not for you. Better to stick with an iphone or Galaxy. But if you want a much more natural, and accurate camera like experience that allows for more creativity and actually makes you want to go outside and take pictures......then the Xperia just might be for you. I would always use the comparison between an automatic luxuary sedan vs a manual sports car. They are totally different experiences. An iphone or Galaxy are like automatic sedans. They are comfortable, convenient, and will do most of what you need to be done without requiring too much from you. The Xperia is a lot more like a manual sports car. It's more tricky to drive and you have to learn how to drive it by comparison. But it's also a lot more fun, with a closer to reality feel, and you can push it waaay more.

Only people which have experience with shooting with a camera in Manual mode would appreciate this phone to its fullest cz to know what's right, u gotta at least use the real thing. (a proper camera). But for smartphone people to get to like the dull camera look... That's pretty tough. I'm glad both of us can see its uniqueness.

This jewel is: 1. Top screen in a smartphone! (foff Crapsung with its patents made from Sony concepts!) 2. Top audio in a smartphone! (foff Crapsung with its Mark Levinson marketing and copy-cat patents that are still not on par with the father of acoustics and sound processors - Sony!) 3. Top manual and quality cameras! (foff Crapsung with its copy-cat Sony sensors with 1xx sensors that cannot match the optical's 1 III in any conditions and such crap processing!) 4. Top speed and system compatibility! (foff over any dirty software devices like Crapsung!) 5. The lightest of its kind! 6. Still cheaper at launch than any other two in this test! 7. It is made in Japan - components are made there! CONCLUSION: Pmps, crap schooled rtrds, jrks & other from 'www.parasitesoftheearth.com' THIS ONE IS FOR THE TRUE PRO's and GENTLEMEN, NOT FOR YOU! Cheers!!

I really like the bezel because it adds more functionality with the front facing speakers and I also prefer that the camera is not placed inside the screen which in my opinion looks ugly and takes up screen real estate. If I had to choose from a front facing camera inside the screen and no front facing camera at all I would give up the front camera without a second thought.

It's so clean. No notch or punch hole. The bezel is not a wasted space and just enough for the camera, sensor and speakers. Other oems should follow this trend because again, it's so clean. Have used so many Sony phones that I got spoiled with dual front speakers. At times it might not be the best or the loudest but it's better than 1 front, 1 side. Your ears can really distinguished that both sound sounds aren't mixing well due to different directions when your get used to front firing speakers.

Having used the SONY Xperia 1 mark ii for almost one year now I would describe the camera system in a similar way that you do ....it's just fun. It's because it has so much manual control and options that it actually allows you to be creative and play with it. Now anyone should realise that there is a learning curve. But once you do learn how to use the pro apps ....which are like using a real camera.....you can get some frequently good, and occasionally astonishing results. Now....it's not a camera system if what you are looking for is something like an IPhone or a Galaxy which are basically made for people who know nothing about Photography and just want the phone to do all the work. Then the Xperia is not for you. But if you want to be creative, and you want to have fun figuring it out and seeing how you can push the Alpha designed system.....then Xperia may be for you. I always use the analogy of a luxury sedan vs a manual sports car. An IPhone or Galaxy are your automatic luxury sedans. They will do all you want comfortably and conveniently. But the Xperia is a manual sports car. You need to learn how to drive it and it may not be as convenient in some ways, but you can push it so much more, and you will have waaay more fun doing so. As well as having much more of a natural feel.

Great review. I do however want to add 1 thing, which is not specific to this review but almost every phone review out there. In the photography section it was compared to the S21 Ultra and it was mentioned that the Xperia shows the night scenes "as it is" and the Samsung shows them "how my brain likes to see them". I think that even for people who are not all that into photography there is a great solution that can make a huge difference: install Photoshop on the phone, open the RAW file and do the "1 button correction". You can easily get the same result as the S21 Ultra with the Xperia 1iii (or 1ii for that matter), by just tweaking a few things on the RAW picture and then saving it to JPEG again. Do you want it realistic, you can do that, want oversaturated colors.. sure, no problem, sharpen or blur the image a bit... can be done with a slider. Once you know that, you'll look at the camera reviews on phones very differently and see that these days, almost all flagship phones are about equal. No wonder, as most of them all use the same sensors.

Fantastic review. I really cannot appreciate your thoroughness enough. I do have a couple of remarks though. I understand that you probably wanted to keep your video as short as possible, but going all Eminem on it isn't ideal. Like sometimes, you transition from one topic to another so abruptly, and I'm left wondering whether you are still within the same sentence. This is true for the footage too. It transitions to showing a new thing, while you're still talking about the previous thing. Synchronization is important. Other than that, I really appreciated it, it's the first review of the phone I've seen in a language I understand, so thank you. You've earned my subscription.

Because the camera's shutter speed probably matches the iPhone's speed of screen refresh, so the image is clear enough even when elements are moving so fast. The others are twice as fast when refreshing, so the camera will obviously capture blurry frames of the screens in motion since the shutter speed of the camera is not fast enough to freeze them in motion and capture them clearly (assuming the ss was set to 1/60s). This is just similar to how cameras work when taking photos. When the camera's shutter speed is slow, then fast-moving subjects like cars will be blurry, and vice versa if it has a very fast shutter speed.

I find it insane that people increasingly use their phones to view and HEAR content, but are more concerned about screen to body ratio than to a better audio experience with front facing speakers. Or maybe they aren't, and the tech world is just good at marketing that so it's perceived that way. For me, give me good audio any day!
@abu269
@abu269 3 жыл бұрын
I'd honestly rather have thin bezels instead of notches or hole punches any day. I don't like screen compromises. You wouldn't buy a TV with some of the screen missing, so way pay so much for a phone that does that!
@MrMozkoZrout
@MrMozkoZrout 3 жыл бұрын
Well while i like it too this logic has many flaws. To be objective a hole punch is so far the best way to integrate camera on the front face of the phone (excluding the motorized cameras). because you either lose that screen size on some hole punch in the corner or because of bezzels around the display. And as it happens to be, hole punch is more efficient and actually takes up less space. It is also more intrusive tho so it is all just about preference.
@abu269
@abu269 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrMozkoZrout Of course, like most things it comes down to personal preference. In Sonys case, the idea of the 21:9 aspect ratio + dual Dolby Atmos speakers is to provide a cinematic experience in a phone without compromise and I respect that. My brother bought the new Galaxy S21 and whilst having a play around with his phone, the only thing I could notice was that hole punch. And I honestly don't think I can get past that if it were my phone. He also found it annoying at first but eventually got used to it.
@derekdangerous
@derekdangerous 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrMozkoZrout The bezels don't take away screen space, they just make the phone taller. If it had a hole punch the screen would be the same size but the overall length would be smaller.
@MrMozkoZrout
@MrMozkoZrout 3 жыл бұрын
@@derekdangerous Thaqts kind of a mental gymnastics dude. Hole punch doesn't take aways screen space, it just makes the screen be around it. Like if you didn't have those bezels there then sure it would be smaller phone oor it could stay the same size with bigger screen. it is simply wasted space that could be used by screen.

I find it hilarious that you think the classic flat rectangular shape of the Xperia 1 III's display can 'still be liked by some people, weirdly enough', as you say. Like, in what world are curved edges and rounded corners on a display more practical and beautiful than the clasic flat, 90 degree corner shape? Looking at 3:35, do people actually prefer anything but the Xperia display? I mean, I'm not a fan of the stretched 21:9 aspect ratio but, other than that, the flat rectangular display is freaking awesome, and the top-bottom bezels are what they need to be to house actual cameras, sensors and/or buttons. I hope there's still some sanity left in manufacturers to return to actual functional, practical and beautiful displays - the flat rectangle ones, not the curved/rounded corner abominations that the likes of Samsung, Apple and even Xiaomi and others are peddling these days.

I honestly don't know why people even talk about selfie cameras on Sony phones. We all know they aren't good, the back camera is why you buy it.
@Sabundy
@Sabundy 3 жыл бұрын
True. It's designed by people who make actual cameras. So of course they don't care that much about a selfie camera and put their focus into the main camera system.
@MrMozkoZrout
@MrMozkoZrout 3 жыл бұрын
@@Sabundy Well if they make camera why don't make all of the camera great then ? flawed logic. Like i like this phone too and i want to buy Xperia 5 but i don't get this fanboy mentality. It is extremely expensive phones competing with the best of the best and the selfie cam is garbage. I don't mind because i don't take many selfies but damn why excuse it, it's still your money that goes into that product and gets you a worse result in one department.

@@MrMozkoZrout you said it yourself, if you dont mind the selfie camera then why do you mind paying for something you dont mind? The phone has a working selfie camera and it does the job fine, that is all you might care about if you dont really mind, feeling the features not justifying the asking price then the phone is not for you. As for me and some people, we dont go looking for the best of the best, we are looking for a device that suits our needs the best

Nick , few advices for Photo Pro . In daylight , keep ISO below 80. And shutter between 1/1000 - 1/2500s. At night, keep ISO between 100-400, shutter between 1/4 - 1/16s. Turn HDR if you want to shot single frame. Itmdoes not work for motion. For Cinema Pro, sony uses HLG. So if you do gradation , you can use full potential of it. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Great videos man, rooting for the channel to become more and more popular.

I would rather have no punch hole notch and just symmetrical top and bottom bezels. It gives somewhere to hold onto for leverage which won't activate the screen.

That was probably the only unbiased review of this product on YT lol. Anyways, you could talk a little bit about the audio gear into it for the jack outuput. Like, what are the dac specifications about it, does it compete with the mighty LG V10 that had a dedicated ESS chipset. What does the Sony have in this department?

One of the most thorough walkthroughs/reviews of this phone. Great content. Lot of work clearly gone in. I wish we got to see more of the camera in photography in a range of different modes/scenes. I would like to see how this competes with a Pixel camera for example as I think it's the best auto mode Android phone for photos, (arguably).
