damn this is so simple but so helpful for reference, track sounds great

The RMS values here are the real gold dust I think. You can match these with your instruments and tonally troubleshoot from there (e.g : If you've got too much low end in your, your kick will sound too quiet at the same RMS value) and look at whether instruments need to be more dynamic or less to fit the framework.
@blakecasimir6 ай бұрын
For individual instruments use RMS. For full mixes, use LUFS.
@djvoid16 ай бұрын
@@blakecasimir In some circumstances yes, but not this IMO. RMS is unweighted in terms of frequency, whereas LUFS is (it's the whole point of LUFS after all). LUFS is more useful for full track reference comparison, but when it comes to individual instruments, RMS and also RMS to Peak comparison can be more revealing as to the RMS value vs our perception of loudness/dynamics.

Thank you so much for this, I started producing on december last year and have been very slowly trying to learn to mix correctly, I like to think that I already have done a good amount of advancements and my ears are getting better and better. These targets that you shared although they could seem very simple definitely helped me out so much, I feel like I always accidentally either over shoot the lows and get a very opaque sound or under shoot and end up with no punch. I just did a mix following my ears and adding in these targets and wow the difference is HUGE. Everything is in its right place and it's probably the best mix I have ever done. Thank you once again, huge fan of your music and content.

Truly a master Yan Cook, you have inspired my music and I legit bootlegged one of your tracks with a sort of sloppy Schranz kick in order to fit it in for a performance once while keeping most of the structure from the original piece. I really appreciate your work and your lessons, keep it going

@YanCook3 ай бұрын
They shouldn't match, totally separate values :)

Sorry. I meant If my kick has the same peak DB as yours but the RMS doesn’t match yours . My rms is lower So for example I put my kick at 7.8 but the RMS is lower
@YanCook3 ай бұрын
@@Larry2times Ok, this means that your kick has lower energy, so you have room to boost your low end/kick with saturation, compression etc, or just leave it like this, if you're happy with the sound :)

also one last question. when adjusting these levels. is it better to have nothing on the master. or are you doing this with your mastering chain on?
@mertk.33866 ай бұрын
Even if you match these frequencies and rms values, if it sounds bad, it sounds bad, and you can’t change it… Your monitors’ accuracy, flat response, and room treatment are far more important in critical listening and mixing.

Please show equalizers on your channels. Should low cut be up to 100hertz?
@Capital-Records6 ай бұрын
Depends on the sounds you use... At low end usually 30Hz... On Hi Hats 1000Hz... Thing about what a human ear can regocnize and in the Low End what a PA can offer to move Air! All under 30Hz would be a very fat Speaker ... lüüüüül ;)

@@Capital-Records I usually cut the sub channel around 20hz and the kick channel around 36hz. Based on what you said, there should be no frequencies below 30hertz, right?

We can't hear below 30Hz, but it can affect the RMS and mess my overall loudness, so I usually cut everything below 30-35Hz.

@@YanCook mono-stereo setting utility width-delay etc. Other than that, are you using a different plugin? like ozone imager. (I put the imager on the master channel and divide the frequencies into four; 220hz-1k-7k.) 220 is completely mono, 1k is 40-45 mono, 7k is 50-55 stereo, after 7k is 75-80 stereo (it may vary, but 220-1k-7k does not change .)
