Simplest way to explain techno vs edm: EDM : build ups and drops in EVERY track. Think a triangle waveform. Up down. Up down. Up down. Techno : the entire DJ set is one , slow , long build up with a peak towards the end of the set. Think a gradual waveform peaking in intensity at the end... another way to explain: EDM : each track separate and instantly recognisable Techno: it’s a journey. Tracks mix and mush into each other so much that you are taken with the DJ on that journey. The ecstasy experience from both forms of music is completely and utterly different. Me - I really really prefer techno.

How could house be a sub genre if house has a million of its own sub genres, deep house, prog house, acid house, tech house, tropical house, UK garage house, etc. I get where youre coming from since technically its all electronic dance music but thats not a genre and if someone told me they listen to EDM i would have no idea what kind of music they listen too thats like saying i listen to songs that are made with guitars

I don't know if anyone gets this but this is my take on edm vs techno When you are an outsider, or unfamiliar, edm seems more energetic, hypnotic, magical even; and techno seems like a bunch of noice. When you know techno, you know it's actually the other way round ;) Edit: I guess that might seem a bit of a cocky comment, but what I mean is that people that don't listen to these types of music or go to clubs, might enjoy elm more at their first encounter because it's generally more 'catchy' and often has strong drops or whatever, and techno might seem somewhat weird. Like you are at some get together party with people from your work or some pigeon racing club, etc; and later on, people are a bit tipsy and the night is still young so you head to a club. They might be more likely to hit the dance floor with one hand in the air if it's edm, less likely if it's techno. If you're into techno, you get techno.

marshc187 I totally understand. I took some of my friends that liked edm to a real techno party in Amsterdam. It was really dark techno, like Shlomo and SHDW & Obscure Shape. At first they felt super weird. A techno rave is a special atmosphere. But then they absolutely loved the music and how people are just free and are here for the music 100% and for nothing else. But it's true that you either like techno or you don't.

Funny how you say this. My buddy and i went to edc but just for techno and one of our homegirl wanted to go see kaskade or tiesto. I looked at my boy and we were like naaaaah!!! i don't think it's necessarily the different sound that make people like me dislike "edm" rather than just the overall feel that the scene represents. it looks glamorous, overperfect and superficial; something i can't relate to. the gigs are maxed out in terms of sound and lighting, whole thing is about the event or the name rather than the music. whereas i think that techno represents a much deeper and darker state of mind and all you need for the perfect techno experience is a small basement techno club and a crowd that shares the love for techno

Reading all those comments I'm surprised that nobody has pointed out that EDM is mainly distinguished by the marketing machinery behind it, it's not a musical genre nor an umbrella term for all electronic music. It's all about lifestyle branding: selling energy drinks, alcohol, clothing, accessories, gym subscriptions and any other endorsement they get their hands on. And if you want to be a producer/DJ you need to buy the sample packs from the label, presets, following standards, get photo-shoots, stylist etc... it's almost like a pyramid scheme. Not saying that the techno scene is above commercialization and getting to know the right people; but being a good at business is not your primary concern if you want to become a successful techno producer. Even big labels like Drumcode will only sign people who are exceptionally creative and skillful; they don't really care that much about how many insta followers you have.

So after watching the entire playlist what no one has said and I think is well worth the mention. Not the whole semantics shit that everyone is arguing over but what is trying to be said is this. EDM mostly pertaining to dub-step and big house vs techno is that EDM is sets of stand alone recognizable songs that meld into each other at the beginning and end but not always . Vs techno witch is one long set of slightly changing back beats with variation in the highlights that is ment to be more of a piece of sonic art a painting for the ears that forms a mood or picture in the mind "sonic art" that is repainted every time the d.j. spins a set. It can and will change depending on the night,crowd,mood of artist ect.. this means that the experience for the crowd even though it is a group one is very personal to each attendee. A good d.j. has the skills and ability to paint so that everyone interprets it in nearly the same way. In contrast EDM as used here is experienced the same way by almost all attendees because they all know the songs and they are by an large exactly the same as they are on the albums but played in a different order depending on the night. So tell me witch one is better? That's all depending on what you want out if it. Techno is better buy far but then again that's what I want out of my music.

I see this a lot. I've never done MDMA and not because there's anything wrong with it. I been into rave, goa, d&b, gabber, acid techno and hard techno since the 90's. I came out of the industrial/EBM scene and always loved hard weird electronic music. I have a hypothesis .Some of us got into techno because we liked weird electronic music already. Some got into it after taking drugs since it made them more open to hearing weird and wonderful sounds that they otherwise would have rejected.

Basically it's characterized by having abstract synths and a futurist sounding ambience. Most of it ranges from 120-150 BPM (depending on the genre) and has a 4 to the floor kick pattern and may or may not contain a clap or snare on the 2nd and 4th pattern (also depending on the genre) (except some genres like Dub Techno). Also don't let shitty top 50 mainstream music fool you, proper House and Dubstep can be equally fascinating as Techno (some Aphex Twin early tunes like Analogue Bubblebath were Ambient House). Depending of the song. Tunes like Xtal or Phonatacid (even tho Xtal has little Breakcore influences) could count as Techno, but tunes like Mangle 11 or Laughable Butane Bob could be more Jungle/Glitch but they have some techno influence. Anyways Aphex Twin's music is a whole world and it's very difficult to classify since he has made ambient, Jungle and even piano pieces.

Techno is EDM. EDM, if you did not know, is an acronym that stands for electronic dance music. Is Techno a form of music? Well that is debatable but for the sake of argument, lets say it qualifies as music. Is it created by electronic means? Yes that is for sure, do you dance to it? Yep, so I guess we can classify it with all the other types of edm, Dubstep, trance, electro, and on and on. Here is a list of edm en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_dance_music though some might not be dance music. What your video showed me is that Techno is the rap music of edm. It is highly repetitive. uses almost no cords and shows very little musicality. It lacked normal music structure such as verse, chorus ect. It had little melody, no point counter point. It did not even try to create tension with drops, dynamics and very few changes. A lot of rhythm but what stuck out was, instead of moe cow bell, it is moe high hat. It seemed to be the driving force behind every track. In your comparison to what you called "EDM", the edm tracks you played were at least musical. They had melody, used cords, and used tension to give the music a feel and at least the appearance of a climax. Your techno examples were droning on and on with very little change. From a technical aspect, any child with a laptop and FL Studio could produce that monotonous, repetitive droning on and on better than the "artists" playing your example of "Techno". The reason you have to create a video to explain what techno is shows it sounds like all the other mindless garbage out there that people use a computer and an edm plugin to create what they consider music. So to give it a fair shot, I went to beatport top 100 and listened to some Techno. Your Mind, Space Date by Adam Beyer, and The Underground Laton remix were all rap vocals over EDM music. LOL. People will have preferences, and if you like Techno, that is fine but to try and distance Techno from EDM when Techno is electronic dance music... it is kinda dumb to try and do that. IMHO of course.

Tbh I understand if you like techno and if you're just trying to point out the difference between it and EDM that's perfectly fine. But, I don't agree with the people putting techno on a pedestal above edm. Both are good in their own regards. To be fair some of the techno songs are cool but have terrible production value and same for edm If you want to say one is better than the other then please use some great examples of both. For example, I think stuff by KSHMR would be a good place to start for EDM instead of picking shitty big room drops that barely anybody likes nowadays.
