So, the Lycoming T53 has a bore of 4.5 inches and a stroke of 4.5 inches? Been around turbine engines for the last forty-one years; never seen a turbine engine with a bore or a stroke, period.

Wow, the power of these aircraft engines is absolutely mind-blowing! It’s fascinating to think about the engineering that goes into creating such massive machines that can produce these incredible sounds. The sheer force and energy are palpable even through the screen! I wonder how the sound waves affect the environment around the airport. It raises questions about noise pollution and its impact on local communities. Shouldn’t there be stricter regulations on when and how often these planes can take off and land, especially in residential areas? I'd love to hear thoughts on balancing aviation growth with the quality of life for people living near airports.

The R-3350 was not very reliable at first. The bombers flying to Tinian carried and extra engine in the bomb bay as engine failures were very common and having extra engines at the base was imperative.

Friendly comment here: 3:23 these engines are NOT known for their reliability on the B-29 as shown. My research online tends to blame the "gill" flaps located aft of the cowling. The flaps were a major design flaw for cooling these engines during takeoff. How do I know? My dad was a rear gunner and survived a crash on a B-29 during take-off on his third and final mission to Japan. It was an engine that seized up during takeoff that caused his crash.
@jimschutz
@jimschutz 3 ай бұрын
As I look at these awesome engines history shows that the B-29 should have been designed with an inline liquid cooled motor just as the Lancaster bomber was. The P-51 had this as a fighter and became the dominant reason my dad survived and never had to engage the enemy on his tour of duty. The P-51 fighter escort cleared the way for my dad's first two bombing missions. Please feel free to comment!

@@jimschutz also there weren't Pratt & Whitney engines their were the Wright R3350 Double compound, turbocharged Radial. The real problem was like the B29, the engines had also been rushed into service do to the needs of the war. Both plane and engines desperately need a couple more years for R&D and time to wring out all the bugs with what was the most complex plane built up to that time. Foot note, back in 1977 I got to sit in FiFi when it was at Arlington Texas at the Confederate Airforce. We spent a beautiful day Walking around photographing and sitting in most of the warlords they owned. I also go to sit in and photograph a Henkel HE-111 that had bombed London. It was a weekday and the museum was like a tomb that day and we had it to ourselves. Quite the experience at 15.

Seems to take so much to get a radial started. Hold this for that long, hold that for this long, flick that switch at this moment or you start all over. Do all this when an strafing attack was under way during wartime.

Fifi has Wright R3350s, not P&Ws, and those 3350s were most definitely NOT renowned for reliability at that stage of their development. Many B29s were lost due to engine fires and other failures, and they were generally disliked by their crews. In fact, Fifis 3350s are an amalgam of early and late series engine components to improve reliability.

3:51.... Huh? The engines had about 3350c.i., NOT 4360c.i.. You are confusing the 18 cylinder 2-row R-3350 with the 28 cylinder 4-row R-4360.... In fact, the 2 engines weren't even made by the same companys. The 3350 was mfg by Wright, and the 4360 was mfg by Pratt&Whitney.

18:06 lol ok since when does a turbine have cylinders it didnt have a bore and stroke ITS A JET ENGINE, the turbine compressor mass pressure was in the 7.4:1 and around 1100 shp. AS for the D suffix never seen it, series denotation for the civilian variant was T53L-11A where as the T53L-11 was the military. Still laughing bore stroke and number os cylinders for a jet turbine learn your engines and turbines you definetly have no clue what you are labeling . Not to mention numerous specs on engines and what they were used on are in error on many here.
