It seems they don't have a (mini)DisplayPort pass-through input either, which means we can only use Thunderbolt output with the iGPU, from what I understand.

There's one other problem it seems - the board doesn't have a Thunderbolt pass-through. From what I understand, this means we can only use Thunderbolt with the iGPU and not a discrete card.

@@Person.aMedia No. It's only related to streaming video from discrete card to your monitor via thunderbolt on motherboard. It's technically possible, but almost never implemented. Probably because it would consume part of PCI-E bandwidth, but since cards almost never fully utilize it most likely it's because manufacturers just don't care.

I did a Build with this Board, and i9 13900k with RTX 4090. My only issue is that it doesn’t have HD Audio plug in the MOBO. So you have to use the Strix Hive dial that comes with it if you use Microphones for streaming and stuff. Everything else is great. 4 USBC Ports, 2 of them Thunderbolt ports. 64gb Ram slots, multiple RGB header plugs as well. Dual M.2 NVME SSD sandwich on top of each other (no longer underneath the board).

I loved the Asus gaming family of ITX boards from the second they arrived. I have the Maximus VII ITX, the Strix Z390-i Gaming and now the Strix Z790-i. I don-t like that they moved the soundboard in the hive and from there you have to connect all the audio devices. I like the idea of connecting the headset in the hive but the main audio system i prefer to connect it in the back of the mainboard. The other thing that botheres me is that it seemes to me that the board is made in a hurry...there are some compatibility issues/ some things to be corrected in bios. My system freezes from time to time and becomes unresponsive till i hold the power button and turn off. For the price that is now....it should be better.

it is about time ITX got a second PCIe slot, then we could add whatever we wanted via ribbon cable with PCIe slot on the end, & have it run off the other device than the main PCIe, so it doesn't share lanes. (Chipset & CPU) But M.2 to PCIe adapters work too, but would be best if 'spare' M.2 was on the back of the m/b so not to have a cable ribbon running across your build.

Answer to Your question is heat mate, if You've had Aquantia 10 gbe chip on that little board, it would require another doohickey thingie there to cool it, not enough space, so that's the answer. The infamous Intel I225-V which most likely occupies this motherboard [I have it too, just still in box] is also running hot [its controller], but it can be side cooled by VRM heatsink. And that's that.

I've heard larger factor mobos such as MATX or ATX are better at dispersing temperature due to their bigger size but there's not a single MATX board that can compete with this one, not even an ATX one tbh.

@@TomasRamoska I use a 10 gbe thunderbolt lan adapter every day. For 3 years. Before most motherboards came with 10 Gbe. Works like a champion. Plug it and forget it. I also use a usb audio interface for sound, hooked up to an equalizer and some KrK speakers/subwoofer. way better than the built in garbage, that would sometimes have interference and other issues. It’s not as bad as you think.

tbh i got similar motherboard but am5 for amd , X670E-I and in my opinion that remote control is bad.. racing wheel is disconnecting on it every few minutes... the audio card is under my expectation... 1200 SupremeFX was much better in my opinion... DAC Sabre.. sounds nice but audio is nothing special.. even USB Xonar U1 was better in my opinion. So I just buyed this one because B650E was not available yet.. but will not pay so much next time. Same to Z790, will propably just buy B760 because is no point to pay 250$ more. // also the asus software I am not happy how it works.. will not buy asus next time // bios flashback works very slow, and led check system also so slowly doing it... fans on motherboards are loud on starting then quiet. // volume control also not great very overpriced in my opinion for something what looks perfect on paper but not in practice

cant buy this ...why? because of the 2 built in internal rans...noisy and failure...can't have built in fans, have to go up to micro for proper heat distribution and cooling without fans

I would only get this over the $100 cheaper MSI Z790i if I needed Thunderbolt. The ASUS board looks better, but both boards got me to 8000mhz DDR5 and performance and cooling are within margin of error. With the ASUS, you are paying more for the external desktop controller. I build in ITX for the form factor and minimalism and don't use the large controller. I prefer the 3 m.2 (1 G3, 2 G4) slots that the MSI offers. I hate SATA SSD's and 3 m.2 is perfect.

Same here I prefer the MSI MPG Z790I Edge over the Asus mobo there. The three m.2 slots was a big sell for me and the $100 cheaper was the icing on the cake.

Had i done more research id of known the first PCIe slot issue with intel and PCIe gen 5. If you have anything in 1st and only slot in itx you're gen 5 nvme is now a gen 4 and there is nothing you can do about it. Even if youre board supports both Gen 5 PCIe and nvme Asus shouldn't be legally allowed to say that on the board or description and try charge anymore for it.

May be it's only a Gigabyte thing, but I'm shocked how ASUS is charging $460+ for a mini itx board but doesn't have a metal back plate in the back. Also, I still find it weird for them needing to make an expansion card for SATA port, not sure if they are trying to phase out the SATA port since everyone pretty much using nvme ssd already, but if you want to opt out the expansion card, I don't think you can use those as USB-C port right?

Pretty sure they wanna slowly phase out the Sata port, but glad it still have option for adding them in expansion cards to they aren't completely gone

Those are not USB ports. Those are type C connectors, which can be used for literally anything. Since this daughter board has USB headers as well, you could in theory utilize those by making DIY adapter, but it would be USB 2.0 only anyway. Don't know how much use there is for 2.0 these days.

For building a system for content creator usage, plus other usage, I would never even consider an ITX motherboard. It is way too limited. And until recently I would have agreed with you that a built-in 10GbE port is a necessity to connect to a high-speed NAS, but I've now seen the light and will by completely bypassing that level, going directly to 40GbE. But no motherboards have 40GbE built-in, that I'm aware of. And ITX motherboards have only one PCIe expansion slot. So there is just no way an ITX motherboard will ever work for me. mATX, perhaps, but much better to go with a full ATX or even eATX motherboard. Then I can install my 40GbE NIC, GPU, BlackMagic 4K Monitor card, and whatever other card(s) I need, in an easy to work with form factor that's not cramped. Then connect to a DIY NAS that I'll customize to my exact needs, including the necessary 40GbE NIC, using free TrueNAS/FreeNAS. Both the NAS and workstation PC will be full tower cases. The NAS a full tower to hold plenty of drives, and the workstation PC just because they'll be side-by-side and no advantage to having a smaller case. Then both cases will be tucked away under my desk, but on trollies where they can be easily wheeled out if I need to work on them.

Personally, I went through four of these boards all with memory stability issues and more. It was such a pain I bought the Msi Mpg z790i instead and it just works. If you look at the reviews for this board, they're horrible. I'm disappointed in ASUS with this design and quality control and unfortunately for me this was the only z790i board with a gen 5 M.2 slot as the MSI doesn't have one just Gen 4 slots but I would choose stability over that all day.

I would love to see 10G nic and onboard HD-Audio. That external device (hive)... I'd probably never use it. Get rid of that, the keychain, and stickers... might save about $100 from the total cost. Maybe even ditch SATA ports and support one extra M.2 somehow.
