If you're in the market for LEDs for a grow check out Bloom Plus on amazon. I'm using them on three different tents right now and they are performing amazing and hit some of the same numbers that something like a Mars hydro would hit. The biggest thing you want is 50 to 80 watts per square foot. Actual watts

Thank you for confirming my suspicion and giving me this safety warning to. I first wondered how they could produce these snake lights so inexpensively. Then I could not reconcile the descriptions and the reviews. What I found most bizarre was to see photos of a couple of pathetically small and weak looking plants that the owner thought looked great while using these snake arms lamps. I now am following you so that my indoor herbs will grow.

When it comes to led lights watts don't even matter, I've read so much about how Watts aren't a good indication of how good a grow light is.. For example "it's not really about wattage. Wattage is a measurement of electricity consumption, and while it's helpful to know how much wattage your grow light uses (so you can make a more economical, energy-saving choice) it actually has nothing to do with the amount of energy your plants need to grow" Another - "The watts rating on a LED grow light tells you how much electricity it will use, and therefore the ongoing cost to run the light, but it tells you very little about how bright the light is, or how suitable the light is for growing plants." "With incandescent and florescent lights, watts were a good measure of the brightness of a light. Not so with LED. Lower wattage can produce more light."

The USB lights are actually great for growing small plants for those of us with very little space. I'm using them to supplement what little ambient light my room gets, growing herbs and some leafy greens in my livingroom. Even tomatoes. They work great; nothing would grow before I added the light. So, it's a good idea to not just dismiss them out of hand.

I use one for seedlings into germ, the biggest issue I have is that its limited in timing as it has a built in control and an external timer will not work as they don't go back on. That said, I'm getting 250 on my ppfd meter at a few inches and its producing good results. Its not the end-all but a good starter before going under the Xs1500.

They do lie but it’s not a night and day difference with their information. I agree they shouldn’t be lying to people but your par testing is different from anyone else growing outside of a tent. I love the videos explaining pat testing inside a reflective grow tent but take the light out of that reflective environment and then par test on a non reflective surface and no walls. You should then begin to understand how lights are suppose to work not just from a small reflective tent but a green house setup. That’s would give you honest results not having a reflective material that bounces around the light that comes from the source.

I got a $30 four-leg 45W light, like the ones you say are worthless. I've found it's better than a windowsill but worse than sitting outside. One thing that confuses me is how many people use lights without any enclosures. So many photons feeding the walls and ceilings, instead of the plants. I used the box it came in, lined it with foil, put the plants and lights in, and they're growing well. Not 600W HPS well, but better than they were next to the window. My rule-of-thumb when looking at LED grow lights is to take 10% of the listed wattage, to find the actual consumption, then double that number to find its equivalent in HPS/MH. So a 1500watt LED only uses 150watts of power per hour and produces light similar to what a 300watt HPS/MH would produce (and really not even that: more like a 250watt). This doesn't stop them from claiming it's more like a 600watt HPS, but that's just not true.
@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 4 жыл бұрын
yeah they arent "worthless" but there are some other options for the money, but sometimes those clip on lights are nice for a small collection or near a windowsill, if it works well for you then its great! i didnt mean to be negative about them!

@@TechplantChannel Oh, yeah, I wasn't trying to call you out on the wording; I actually generally agree with your assessment of their value...and agree even more if we include the way people set the lights up (with 80% of the light escaping the area and not going anywhere near the plants). This video was killer and everything you said was exactly what I looked for when I was buying a light for a 4'x4' tent I'm building up. A 45watt USB lamp ain't gonna' work in there! haha I think the big takeaway is "know what you're buying," have realistic expectations on what you're buying, and understand that light capture/escape is a major factor in any lamp's performance. It's unfortunate that Amazon is flooded with cheap Chinese garbage with equally-junk descriptions, but I guess that's what lux meters are for. Maybe I'll do a video on that, as I change my channel over to indoor gardening, to show the "light escape issues" that occur on the edges of unenclosed grows. Big fan Techplant! Subscribed!

@Everyday-Korean
@Everyday-Korean Жыл бұрын
@zixeiyun786 ahh well almost all light fixtures have some kind of transformer that can up or down volt thr 120 to supply the light. The light sockets supply 120v and probably like up to 15 amps. Leds actually are DC usually so for smaller lights you may see the usb style ones. That plastic box is what converts the 120v AC to a DC current that would be whatever voltage the unit needs mYbe like 12 to 24. The much larger lights usually have that transformer internally and you cannot see it. But volts usually aren't something wr need to be concerned with unless we are talking 120 or 240 from the wall socket because some electronics do not have a transformer that handles both! So the wrong voltage will ruin it. There is also the frequency but that's a whole other discussion. Hope this helps a bit. I'm not an electrician so further reading may be needed for you sorry!

The 185 watts is the DRAW, Not the actual Output of the light. Sorry, Techplant but your video is misleading and incorrect. You aren't comparing the OUTPUT of the light. You are comparing the actual power usage of the light. I stopped the video at 2:39 and it clearly shows that the DRAW is 185 watts while it's light output is comparible to that of a 600 Watt HPS/MH light.
@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 4 жыл бұрын
correct its the draw, so its a far better way to compare lights using generally the same tech, because 4 different companies each with lights that DRAW 150 watts using about the same tech can say the output is comparable to a 600Watt HPS a 1000Watt HPS and even some get crazy and claim its an equivalent to 2000Watt HPS. My point is looking at the DRAW of the light will give you a much better comparison that the fake output number they have. This is just a very simplistic way to judge lights. An even better way is through par or umol ratings. But in my opinion that's over kill for houseplant growers which is my target audience. So if you see a light that has a DRAW of 30Watts with SMD leds and another light with a DRAW of 100Watts with SMD leds, yet they both say 600Watt Output equivalent HPS. which one will be a lot closer to the truth? The draw is very important when comparing lights using similar tech. it cuts through most of the marketing lies like "equivalent"
@davidgilbert2622
@davidgilbert2622 4 жыл бұрын
Nope. That isn't at all how it works. It just means that one light is more efficient than the other. You should never compare the wattage draw of a light to determine it's effectiveness. It's like saying one car uses more gas so it's better. Sorry man. Learn Ohms law and how it translates to light. Beyond that, you have no idea what you're talking about.

The chart says at the heights of 12,14,18 in. the PAR in the center is 1053, 853, and 617. It has a analog dimmer and a mean well driver. It feels and looks like it's worth the money. It's dimensions are 11.8x9.5. Only thing I can find as far as brand is YC 1000. It also has ports to add other lights. Just wondering on opinion from info I gave. Thanks. Well, best idea i got from someone: Do not choose the right lights for your plants, but choose the right plants for your lighting. Find out the lighting situation in your home, and then decide on the plants you buy regarding your lighting environment. There are more than enough nice houseplants for all lighting conditions, some even don't need much light at all, and thrive in the darkest corners of your house, others only on rooms where they get full daylight winter and summer.

Are you not getting confused? Power draw/rating is the power consumption on powering the light. Its not the output of the light. For example. I have a 1000w with a power rating of 130w. That doesn't mean the company have lied and my light is 130w. That clearly means how much the light will cost p/kw
@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 2 жыл бұрын
yeah im trying to saying they are just making up the "output" numbers and that you can mostly just ignore that and look at the consumption when comparing lights. Its much better years later. but back then the same whitelabeled light that consumed 100w would say 500w or 1000w because they were just making crap up.

I also have another light that's rated for 75w, so I assume it's more like 40 to 55w. A little more red biased but also does in fact grow plants.
