I was semi trained to boot the system with just the Mobo/CPU/Ram/PSU at first, not installed (sitting on top of mobo box usually). When that goes through, then install everything into the case, leaving both side panels off, and no cable management done, then do full OS install. Usually the process of doing a OS install detect a few problems as well. Only then, do you cable manage, and put the side panels both back on.

My tip is that when it comes to low- and mid-range builds, be mindful of your drives. It might be temping to get an NVMe drive, but if can get a good, larger capacity SATA SSD for a similar price, or cheaper, then go with the SSD. Chances are your computer's bottleneck isn't going to be the SSD even on mid-range builds. That said, this is becoming increasingly irrelevant as M.2 drives have leveled out at the same price as their SATA counterparts.

Just a heads up, those M.2 SSDs that are the same price as 2.5" SSds are not NVMe drives at all, they are M.2 SATA drives. NVMe is still way more expensive than SATA SSDs, and are pretty useless for most people.

One thing to add in PC builds traps is make sure the equipment is actually good. I bought a keyboard and it caused problems that took me a year to figure out. Debris on the electrical connection strip caused intermittent USB power drops and losses which caused all sorts of problems. Since it was new I never once expected it to be the source of all my woes. Symptoms like PCIE power drops that made the video card look bad or windows suddenly going to sleep for no reason and then waking up without having pushed the power button to name a few. Even Logitech has bad equipment from time to time so make sure it's all good to go before you build your system.

If you are populating most or all fan headers on a motherboard (5-8 may be more crucial than 3 btw), do NOT plug everything at once! Certain mobo models do not have good default fan speed settings and can lead to initial surge overvoltage triggering the built-in protection of the board (hopefully it has one...) or give you a heart attack with all the noise and dust that you'll witness as soon as you turn on the system. One way to go around this is to install a couple of obligatory fans first (e.g. CPU, 1 front intake, one rear exhaust) and tweak their RPM profiles in the BIOS before installing the rest.

Cable management. I've been building since I was 14, I'm 33 now. Honestly I didn't give any thought to cable management until about 2 years ago and started really looking into having the option for liquid cooling in the future. After taking the time to hide my cables I've come to realize how much space in in my ATX case using an micro ATX board. Honestly had no idea the back plate space allowed for this sort of thing. Anyone that I showed the rig to never said anything about it so it never crossed my mind. Learned the importance of it by watching build video by linus.
@YourTrulyFriend7 жыл бұрын
About cable management... You made a video with a case stuffed with teddy bears, clothes or something and it wasn't that bad. Yes, everybody should manage the cables inside the cases, but as you saw in your own video, it's not such a big deal in terms of temps.
@ImBakesirl7 жыл бұрын

Here's a tip: Watch the prices vs performance! If you've got a choice between a $200 video card and a $600 video card... more often than not, the difference is going to be negligible for your average person. If you're not gaming in 4k and trying to play the latest everything, the $200 video card will work just fine. OR, you could look into buying two $200 video cards and linking them together with SLI or something and you might even end up on top, $200 cheaper. There's always this... exponential step between hardware, where you'll go from one price, and the next step up is more than 2x that price for a lot less than 2x the performance. Unless you really want the best of the best and you want to throw money around, there's nothing wrong with going for budget when you hit that huge step up in price. I usually try to keep it to between $600-$800 and so far this has served me well. The computer I currently use was about $800 and it on its 5th year and still going strong, other than me having to replace the stock CPU cooler a couple years ago.

Preparing for my first build, I came across a problem with compatibility between fan/led control softwares, specifically nzxt and corsair. The two (like many other two companies today) are not completely compatible and have different led plug sizes. They also each require a different brand new controller hub (Commander Pro/ Hue+). Choose the same company, and you’ll be in the clear as far as controllability and friendliness of fan, lights, and controller software. In my opinion, Corsair software iCue is the best! (I returned my NZXT AIO for the h115i pro for compatibility.)

Tim Rots you're lucky! we used to have one every other Sunday at 7pm for a duration of 6 months. why? no reason. literally no freaking reason. just shows how incompetent our provincial hydro company is and how they rarely/never maintain lines etc

Building your system around your case (don't assume your case can support a 14 inch card) and avoid using cases that have poor airflow if you decide to purchase power hungry components that will spew hot air into the case if you can't effectively vent it out.

One tip: look at all the wires on your case. Write down the label on each one on a piece of paper. Get your Motherboard manual and go to the page that shows all the connections. Write down all the connections that match your case wires. This paper now helps you route cables & wires.

One thing you missed was checking to make sure the CMOS jumper is not in the reset position. Also, make sure you put the video card in the recommended, by mfg, slot if running a single video card. And, make sure your fans are blowing in the right direction. One important part I made a mistke on was not having the right case for OC'd video cards. I think the air flow was insufficient for the XFX R7 270X video card and it over heated and started acting wonky. When I took it out the metal back plate was burned. Fortunately XFX took it back under warranty and replaced it with a nice RX460, the 4 gig flavor, and I updated the chassis.

I would say after putting a lot of pc's together, besides making sure everything works before you put it in the case, make sure that everything fits as it's supposed to. Sometimes top fans won't work well with some boards and sometimes 140mm fans won't work when your case only supports 120mm or 80mm fans.

I built myself a new pc and it conducts slight electricity on the case, what should I do please help, its not like giving a shock but it can be felt.
@juozasdomarkas8487 жыл бұрын
Mad-Tech-Tutor check for any loose cables touching the sides of your case. If you are uber-paranoid of zapping yourself and can't find that wire, hook up a ground lead to the case. It will pretty much guarantee that you won't receive an electric shock, but you might end up frying something in the case.

Juozas Domarkas loose cables like sata cables ?
@juozasdomarkas8487 жыл бұрын
Mad-Tech-Tutor they shouldn't be the problem. It is likely that a cable from your PSU is loose and is touching the PSU case, which then conducts to your PC case. Please note that I am not an electrician and am purely speculating. You are better off asking in Toms Hardware or some other forums than a KZbin comment section.

For the BIOS flash, you could've added two more tips that are linked together. Make sure that there is a warranty on the board so you can send it back if you brick it (happened to me). Also, if you do send it back, to make sure that there's a Windows key at hand.

If there's any component that benefits from going overboard, it's the PSU. A lower percent of capacity that you use translates to lower heat generation and increased life (admittedly only to a point, and with diminishing returns as you approach that point), and as PSUs are often overlooked when upgrading, it can be to your benefit in the future to have one that's capable of far more than you're asking of it today.

From personal experience with my first build I would say three things. First, I bought Skylake when the processors and motherboards first came out and when I went to plug in my new g-sync monitor with the display port connector it didn't work. A monitor that used HDMI worked fine but not the display port setup. Lesson, new means potentially undocumented problems(this one I solved by getting a motherboard from a different manufacturer). Second, you have to connect the case to the motherboard with those fiddly, poorly marked connectors and if you get them wrong bad things can happen. Lesson, if you aren't sure ask an expert even if you have to pay for it. Third(see first), having the newest UEFI version on a USB drive is a really good idea so use another computer to have it ready to go. All of these are motherboard issues(!) the rest was not nearly as hard as I was afraid of. I had another computer running so I could reference KZbin videos while I worked. The first one IS the hardest, it gets better!

one good tip is to not screw it up
@davidmcrell2657 жыл бұрын
GPU install tip: HDMI connectors can wind up too close to the slot ribs preventing the plug from going all the way in. Loosen the PCI screw, gently nudge the card, plug in the HDMI cable until it "clicks", leave the plug inserted, and tighten the slot screw.

I might be late, but it's usually a good idea to get a bit more RAM and Voltage than you need, too. PSUs wear down and lose voltage over time, and a little extra memory never hurts. Current planned build's gonna run ~300w, but I'm going go buy double that for the PSU.

Make sure to plug the front-panel USB cable onto ALL of the pins of a USB 2.0 motherboard connector. This caused a friend of mine's computer to not post when the front-panel USB 3.0 cable was plugged into the motherboard header, leading us to the think the 3.0 port in the case was bad. We finally figured it out when we tried using a flash drive in the USB 2.0 ports, and Windows reported a USB short. We looked at the cable going to the motherboard and found the USB 2.0 cable was only plugged into half of the pins of motherboard USB port, and that for some reason screwed up the USB 3.0 port as well!

Magnetic trays & screwdrivers are needed, don't question it, especially when a screw (which are mostly conductive) falls into the belly of the PC. I had to turn my built PC upside-down to get a loose screw out, re-checked everything before I powered my PC up
