Honestly, I find dark modes more visually appealing as well. I HATE being blasted by dark text on white backgrounds all the time, and especially on my Galaxy Note 8, using dark modes wherever possible really helps it sip battery, and I can theme the accent colors as I please. I definitely am excited for Samsung's one UI update this year too. No more going to the theme store just to download a black theme.

I was a previous dark mode user too. However, I changed habits and went to the next level, as actually eye strain also depends on the contrast of screens and sourroundings. Therefore I use light themes at day and dark modes at nights. Furthermore, looking at dark elements increases melatonin production which makes you feel tired more early, so you better see when to turn it on effectively

I wish he'd mentioned that roughly 50% of the population is afflicted with astigmatism and that those individuals are likely to experience way more eye strain reading white text on black backgrounds. I'm one of those people. Went full dark mode on everything for a while and noticed I started having issues focusing on text for long periods of time. One eye or the other would start to defocus and my vison would blur slightly. Switching back to light mode seems to have all but eliminated the issue for the time being. My eyes feel less tense even which isn't something I've ever been conscious of.

Every time after I read the white text in a black background for a while, when I look back into a brighter background, those dark texts still stay in my eyes for a while like. This hurts me every time when I read stuff on steam. However, if the overall color theme is dark (background not completely black and texts are grey)(or like dracula theme for text editors), then I can read them comfortably. This happens to me on both OLED and LCD screen.

I think for real, light mode is way better on your eyes since your retina would shrink down to limit the light getting to your eyes. If you feel the screen being too bright you really should tune down the brightness of the screen rather than using dark mode. The only few reasons to use dark mode includes: if it feels more contrasty to you, or if want to concentrate on something important rather than getting distracted by the surrounding UI.

I just started using light mode again just for a change and I am very confused. I somehow like both, but not if I'm using them for too long. I wish there was an option to set it to light when the sun comes up and to dark when the sun goes down, like my iPhone 11 Pro Max. Some displays don't know what to do when they see predominantly dark colors, aggressively dimming the screen in an effort to make black look darker. This is at the expense of the light-coloured text, and everything gets way too dim. If there's an option for "auto contrast" or any similar features, turn them off before you go into dark mode.

I was doing sort of a 'dark mode' back in the late 1990s. Even in office light the impact of a bright screen can induce a headache. I mentioned that I was using "dark mode" to my eye doctor and wow... I was read the riot act. I was told in no uncertain terms that I should use a dark screen nor should I "dim" lights in my office. Bright lighting should always be used when reading. So please show this to the eyeball doctors guild and see what they say.

I dunno about anybody else but reading text in dark mode actually hurts my eyes way more. It's like the text will burn itself into my retinas and sometimes after long reading sessions I can even see those text when not looking at my screen for a couple of seconds. So instead of dark mode I'd prefer a darf grey background with light grey text on it.

I'm currently building a smart home application for Android, Windows and the webbrowser. The dark mode was an important element from the beginning of the design process and is actually quite challenging. My friend who is helping me build this app continuously asked why I bother with this "small" feature. The answer is actually quite simple: If you expect your user to use your app in the middle of the night to turn his lights on you better help him to not burst into tears because the screen is so fucking bright. Actually, I'd like the office programs etc to go one step further (like my Android implementation does) and turn the dark mode on and off with respect to sensor data like navigation systems in cars do. It would make so much more sense to have the dark mode scheduled by environmental inputs or at least a timer. But no, you can either use to dark mode permanently or don't use it at all(which most people do since the setting is buried inside dozens of submenus, looking at you Windows 10). And some dark mode implementations are really shitty as well. Outlook for example continues to show a bright white background within the preview Window which is not annoying at all (I get that the most emails nowadays are html formatted and are therefore shown as some kind of website, but they could at least go the easy way and apply an invert filter to the whole email, its better than showing the bright white window after all)

My dark mode setup for the chrome browser is done using the 'Midnight Lizard' extension. BEST ONE BY FAR! Look it up, install it, thank me later and enjoy it! Seriously. And I installed the 'complete black theme for google chrome'. Looks so nice on the blank new tab page, because it's black as well, not that blinding, stock-white color.

it actually has the opposite effect if you're in a bright area. Bright area + dark mode will make your eyes hurt the same way as Dark area+ bright mode will.
