i really appreciate how the host handles these interviews. he seems balanced, well informed, gives plenty of space to the co-host to explain their portion before offering his opinion...to that effect he nails Ted's role at this point. he'd been pushed to the top and now he could help get others over, or in herc's case get him over even more. Ted was a super heel and in one segment helped turn hercules into a baby face

So glad I just discovered this. Ted was like a Hollywood bad guy when I was a kid and I’ve always loved that about him. Such a classic human being.

I liked when Heenan was smiling after Dibiase gave him (kayfabe) money and Ted revealed that Hercules was his "slave". IF that was Bad News Brown or SD Jones, WWF would've had a lot of bad press.

Well sure, but probably they would have refused to go along and Vince probably wouldn't have thought to push the envelope that far anyway. But think about it -- Virgil is still a full-fledged heel here; he hasn't yet turned on DiBiase. It's quite a sight to see him -- of all people -- trying to help DiBiase subdue someone into slavery.

@@65if2007 That's true, except I can see Bad News Allen telling Patterson or Vince to F off. Maybe SD Jones would say yes since he's a lower card guy.

Hercules should have been pushed better in my opinion. He had the badass character and could have been a lot bigger star.

He was pushed. I remember he won the battle royal in 1987 on Saturday Night Main Event, and that battle royal was stacked with superstars such as Hogan and Andre. Also when Macho Man was champion he came out on the Brother Love show while Hercules was being interviewed and endorsed him basically.

Herc definitely went over as a babyface here. They cut out the part where the crowd is screaming, "HERC! HERC!" What amused me about Herc's babyface turn was that you don't see him getting outraged at the idea of Ted DiBiase buying a slave UNTIL he "finds out" that he's the one. But before that, he doesn't object to the idea as a matter of principle. By Survivor Series 1990, Herc has turned heel again, teaming up with Paul Roma as "Power and Glory", and he and DiBiase ended up on the same tag team and you see the two of them high-fiving each other, as friendly as can be. Hey, no hard feelings about that "slave" incident, huh buddy? 😁😁

Is Ted taller than Hercules? These few minutes are better than anything now a days. It would have took twenty minutes to do that these days LOL.

I heard that. The wrestlers these days definitely don't believe "brevity is wit." Plus they would have sounded like they were reading from a script.

I don't get how the angle was offensive, there was nothing wrong with it. I recommend watching Ted Dibiase's pre-match promo from Summerslam 1989. That always cracks me up every time I watch it.

It was a great angle and it was one of the better ways to turn a long-term heel like Herc. I think the same sort of angle could be done today just without using the word "slave". It would have to be changed around to be about a contract being sold to a bad boss and the guy not being allowed to work if he doesn't do what the new boss says.

The should have still given Ted that Rumble 89 win........... It would have been the perfect re-boot for his character having bought his way to #30..... They did that part but just threw the pay-off away on John Stuff for no good reason.
