Took his jazz appreciation class at UW in the late '70s. One of those small big moments in life. Thank you, Prof. Davis.

I was fortunate to work with Ted Dunbar for part of a three- and four-night a week gig for several months in a group playing at the (original) Red Rooster at 138th & Adam Clayton Powell in 1979-1980. The group included Bucky Thorpe, the leader, on trumpet; Don Pullen on organ; and Bobby Battle on drums. Ted came aboard after Roland Prince left to tour Europe with Elvin. Ted was a wonderful guy and a very tasty player. I believe he was teaching at Rutgers at the time.

What a drag that someone stole it! I remember when he first got it, he let me play it a couple of times. It made a lot of sound! I miss Ted. I still think of him a my mentor. After I graduated from Livingston he helped get me a teaching gig there that lasted four years.

Ted Dunbar (January 17, 1937 in Port Arthur, Texas - May 29, 1998) was a jazz guitarist, composer, and educator. He published four volumes on jazz. He trained as a pharmacist at Texas Southern University, but by the 1970s only did pharmacy work part-time. He was also a trained numerologist and had studied other aspects of mysticism.

Fantastic. The old musicians giving a guitar class. Nowadays, some feel better. A great misunderstanding. Without the technological progresses today, the old ones show him/it how better they were..Thanks for sending me.

He became interested in jazz at age seven and in the 1950s he joined several groups while studying pharmacy at Texas Southern University. At one point he received accolades from Ebony (magazine) and Down Beat. In the 1950s he became influenced by Wes Montgomery. In 1966 he moved to New York City and gained more experience. In 1972 he became one of the first jazz professors at Rutgers University and taught Kevin Eubanks, Vernon Reid and Peter Bernstein among others. He died in 1998 of a stroke.

Hey Alex Matro, It's me Gene! We studied with Ted side by side over at Nicholas music center. You are correct, sir. Ted did tell us that he was given that L-5 by Wes. Do you remember when his D'Aquisto got stolen? He told me he was at a gig somewhere in NYC and was unloading his car. The guitar was stolen out of his trunk when he went inside for a short moment. He was bummed out for weeks after that. Luckily, he let me play it at a jury I had the first year I studied with him.

I wish Gershwin had lived long enough to hear this.

It's an L5. I studied with Ted at Rutgers in the 70's, and that's the guitar he brought to school every day. He had Jimmy D'Aquisto build him a guitar back then, but after a year or two went back to using the Gibson. Super 400s are 18" across the lower bout, L5s are 16.5".

And a D'AQuisto New Yorker is usually a 17"

I can't seem to find any of Ted's songs here on KZbin.
@UnitedEffect12 жыл бұрын
Hard to see exactly ..but looks like a Gibson L4CES or Super400 maybe, with the florentine cutaway you can narrow it down somewhat. Hope that helps.

Davis' is a strange interesting player. His bowed solo is the highlight imo. (And I came to listen to Dunbar).

Besides the florentine(pointed)cutaway, if you can also get a good look at the tailpiece....that should help narrow your search/choices. Happy hunting!

Could anyone tell me what guitar that is Ted is using?
@alexandermatro933512 жыл бұрын
Actually it's a 60's L5. I studied with Ted in the mid 80s and he played this guitar at many lessons. I believe that it was given to him by Wes Montgomery.

_ Wow, really?!!
@ckaski11 жыл бұрын
He stopped using the D'Aquisto so he could get it tweaked just the way he wanted it. He started using it again and bringing it to lessons. Unfortunately, it got stolen sometime around '87 or '88.
