Food is culture, food is life - it’s part of who we are and the magic that binds us together. But here’s the twist: the way we eat is pushing the climate to the brink, with a third of global greenhouse gas emissions coming from the way we grow, process and waste food. Through TED Talks and conversations with chefs, scientists, activists and more, this film explores a recipe for change - and how shifting to plant-rich diets, embracing innovations like lab-grown meat and reimagining farming's regenerative future can help us feed the world without frying the planet. (Hosted by Manoush Zomorodi and featuring Jonathan Foley, Sam Kass, Pinky Cole, Jasmine Crowe-Houston, Dana Gunders, Uma Valeti, Hiroki Koga, Helianti Hilman, Jonathan Foley, Peter Dawe, June Jo Lee, Gonzalo Muñoz, Agnes Kalibata, Marcelo Mena, Andy Jarvis and Anthony Myint)
Countdown is TED's global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at countdown.ted.com

I was called to grow food for my community. I’m struggling but not giving up. Clean and healthy food through Victory gardens and organic methods. Natural composting practices and no synthetic fertilizers. Heirloom seeds. You can do it too! Just start small and manage what you can. I rely on Mother Nature for most of my watering but sometimes I have to hand water. Plant a small plot on your front lawn if you can. Grow in pots. YOU CAN DO IT! I have best results from tomatoes and peppers. Kale will give you almost instant gratification.

My front and back yard was full of 2 plum, 1 yellow/1 white peach, 1 nectarine, 1 Hass avocado, 2 cherry, 1 apple, 1 grapefruit, 1 mandarin, banana, lemon trees. Eggplant, tomato, green beans, watermelon, red/green/chili peppers, bokchoy, radish, lemon grass, potatoes, spices, roses, birds of paradise, Crocus,...

I was type 2 diabetic and switched to a whole food plant based diet. No regrets. It’s cheaper, healthier, tastier and lastly cheaper. My garden supplies practically free food during growing season (why water grass when you can grow food!?)

Organic growing, permaforesting, and free ranging animals are sustainable. Composting food is easy, worm bins can go under your counter, and a south facing window (most vegetables) or west (those that spout in summer like lettuce, broccoli, and other spring crops) over even eastern (same as already given as heat increases) and south facing (rhubarb). So everyone can grow something. We can eat meat less, if we reduce how much we eat free ranging animal instead but this meat levels need to drop.

Only once did the video mention the excessive use of pesticides and their intrinsic part in the industrial food production system. GMOs were omitted as well. Overall, the video delivers a good message; however, it is presented from a carefully curated angle, undoubtedly congruent with the UN "vision."

my grandfather would raise 2 goats and chickens on the roof of the house, third floor which had open roof. this was in the middle of a small city. we only bought fish or vegetables from the market. maybe we can reduce pressure and reduce co2 in this way that if people have means to raise their own animals in the house, they we should allow them

I’d prefer people to eat less meat where they eat too much instead of growing it in a lab. There are lots of ways to raise animals sustainably in natural environments. The major food systems problems we have are: 1 - the agricultural systems aren’t designed sustainably with nature and aren’t balanced to the food groups we need to consume. 2 - businesses are processing many food products that are unhealthy for people and earth 3 - people’s unhealthy diets drive the system to continue being unhealthy. Changes need to be made in all areas.

Why being vegan can actually be more harmeful for the planet Deforestation Many plant-based foods, especially those in high demand (soy, almonds, avocados, quinoa), require vast amounts of land. Rainforests, particularly in South America, are being cleared to grow soy. Water consumption Almond milk: Producing a single almond requires about 4 liters of water. California, a major almond producer, suffers from droughts partly due to the industry. Avocados: High global demand has led to water shortages in regions like Chile and Mexico. Soil degradation and, monoculture farming Vegan diets heavily rely on monoculture crops like soy, corn, and wheat. These deplete soil nutrients, require synthetic fertilizers, and harm biodiversity. Carbon footprint Many plant-based foods are grown far from where they are consumed, leading to high transportation emissions Increase reliant Many plant-based substitutes (fake meats, vegan cheeses) are ultra-processed and require industrial facilities, energy-intensive processes, and artificial ingredients. Lab-grown meats and heavily processed vegan alternatives often use more energy than traditional, regenerative livestock farming. Biodiversity loss Insect populations decline due to pesticide use in large-scale crop farming. Clearing land for plant-based agriculture destroys habitats for countless species. Sometimes holding animals to slaughter can be better Properly managed livestock (e.g., rotational grazing) improves soil health, captures carbon, and restores ecosystems. Grass-fed cattle can be part of a sustainable cycle, unlike monoculture farming.

If 50% of the workforce in the U.S. didn't have to work 60 hours a week just to make ends meet, maybe they would have some time to relax and spend a little downtime growing some of their own food in backyard gardens. It is the ultimate in eating locally with the added benefit of less chemical inputs needed than maintaining a lawn plus more carbon sequestered in the soil. More people need to get back in touch with the soil. IMO
