Let’s not forget the context of this within all of AI’s career though….he was notorious before this season and through most of his career for skipping practices. This was hardly the first season or time he had received criticism for this and later discussed that it was a mistake of his. We all understand tough times, but that doesn’t remove the fact that he wasn’t communicating that with his teammates or coaches.

From reading the comments, it's pretty impressive the number of people who don't get this point (besides the comedic repeated reference to practice). It's hitting on the tainted image of Iverson and drawing on the similarities of Tartt and Iverson. Iverson is generally considered one of the greatest pure competitors in the modern NBA, the guy was fearless. And for his size, he was far more successful than he had any right to be. I think he's only third behind Jordan and Chamberlain for scoring average. But despite that, he never comes up in a discussion about the greats (unless someone from Philly is in the conversation). In the Great Modern Shooting Guard debate it's only about Jordan and Bryant, no one mentions Iverson except maybe at a distant 5th. And one thing Jordan and Bryant weren't known for: missing practice, thinking they were already good enough. Something both Bryant and Jordan were known for: mentoring team mates and making their team mates better. The writers took an arrogant privileged rant and made it a scathing indictment on selfishness.
@edenfesi65173 жыл бұрын
No 6 foot player comes up in a discussion of the greats, and Iverson wasn't considered a shooting guard for much of his career, so that plays a big part in why he isn't ranked in that group. As far as teammate relationships, Bryant and Jordan were abusive to many of their teammates, and made a number of them worse, something that Iverson never did. Iverson excelled to the furthest level his body was capable of, and was an icon and an inspiration for a generation. You honing in on "practice" in this manner is exactly as silly as Iverson pointed out in his rant. Absolutely missing the forest for the trees. Trying to pin a bunch of unrelated nonsense onto a ludicrous valuation of practice.
@thomaspapp1043 жыл бұрын
@@edenfesi6517 As a 5'10" playground player Iverson is my GOAT, period. What a lot of people miss about this particular rant is that his friend was murdered several months earlier. Here is the poignant part that always gets cut out: "I'm upset for one reason: 'Cause I'm in here. I lost. I lost my best friend," Iverson said. "I lost him, and I lost this year. Everything is just going downhill for me, as far as just that. You know, as far as my life. And then I'm dealing with this. ... My best friend is dead. Dead. And we lost. And this is what I have to go through for the rest of the summer until the season is all over again." Iverson closed out his press conference with the explanation and has reaffirmed the remark since. As he announced his retirement in 2013, Iverson explained the backstory to the rant. “They had no idea my best friend had just got killed," Iverson said. "The press conference wasn’t about practice. It was about me being [possibly] traded from Philadelphia. Nobody ever talked about that, never heard why I was upset or what the conference was about.”

As a sixer's fan, I was under the impression his best friend had died a day or two earlier and the press was getting on him about practice. I never saw this as entitled. His rant was just taken out of context.

Lol sure dude. You can insist that that's "the point" all you want. It's just like whenever anyone talks about some book and claims all of this symbolism in the book, and the writer is like "uhhh yea I didn't intend for any of that but sure that's cool". You have no idea if that's "the point". That they were going anywhere near that deep. It's absurd to say that people that don't agree that your opinion is correct "don't get it". You could easily be wrong, and probably are.
