Right now, I am almost done with early math and onto the kindergarten stuff. lol Thing is, even though I can get the answer without using the videos, I find my speed at reading the word problem and solving it quickly improves. Currently during this coronavirus outbreak when we are participating in distance learning, I’ve been enjoying it quite a lot, because I’m truly learning for the love of learning. One thing that was difficult for me, especially in math class, was having to keep up with the quick pace without fully understanding bits and pieces of the content(therefore creating gaps in my knowledge). However, now, I can watch videos of lessons at my own pace, and if I don’t get something, pause and think about it until I understand and figure it out, then continue. This means I’m able to fully fathom concepts instead of memorizing, and that’s been so enjoyable! It’s also making me so much more self-directed and independent, which is so helpful in life!

@xMiDniTe178 жыл бұрын
This is very correct. The teacher's cannot change the system. It's the people who administer this system; it's the district boards. I'm quite sure 80% of teacher's acknowledge the fundamental issue in the system. Private school is sadly the only option that can change this issue because they are the ADMINISTRATORS of the system. Coming from a background of terrible math skills (ave. low 70s and I worked VERY hard for that) to accessing a private school teacher who tutored on the side changed my entire life. He filled all the gaps of knowledge that I had in mathematics. I saw an improvement of low 70s to high 80s in the matter of a semester. I entered my undergraduate degree in physics and I have the highest GPA in my year. All of this happened due to someone understanding the flaws in the educational system and helping students that have been affected by this system. The educational system fails to allow all students to tap into their potential and thus dwarfs the intellectual capital of society.
@marcevans26208 жыл бұрын
This is very true. I'm a maths teacher but I have a limited time to get through all of the content, I can't ask the exam board to move the exam because students are struggling with fractions or ratios. We need to move to online testing that can take place at any time. That way whenever a student is ready they can take the assessment and they can take as long as they need to get there.

Berlin Lincoln My personal ideal would be some kind of open learning center, where everyone can select from a variety of courses, regardless of age and income, fitting his/her personal interest or enabling to find new places of interest. Simple grades in the current environment are horrible, because they are just "quality of product" stamps designed for employers to better select their workforce. For children they serve better to DE-motivate than motivate. Surely you need quality standards, but they should be independent of age. You see I have no clear idea of what to do, I'm no educational scientist or smth. I just see the current form schools tend to have as dehumanizing and creativity killing.

In order to thrive academically, one needs to enjoy learning. To enjoy learning, among other things, one needs to take pleasure from accumulating knowledge. This requires a curious mindset, and this mindset takes time to develop. For some people, school just passes by too quickly to fully grasp all the concepts to enjoy them. So, a lot of people think they are somehow genetically not suited for education, but the truth is that if you have a functioning brain, you can almost learn anything, as long as you have the desire.

Remember, we are not talking about being the world's best at whatever we are trying to learn. You being exposed to various activities earlier in your life and claiming you are good at those and other people are not does not form an argument against this. Frankly, I find it really narcissistic.

When I hear Sal (or anyone involved in radical education systems really) speak about the field, I get this intense urge to track down college deans grab them by the shoulders and shake them. I want to ask them what objection or roadblock could possibly keep ideas like flipping the classroom and mastery based learning from being implemented tomorrow. I know that roadblocks exist but the concepts seem so self-evident and powerful that I struggle to see anything being a reasonable excuse.

I am currently a public school teacher who is part of group attempting to put this type of program into place. Trust me when I say that lots of people believe that it is the right direction for education, but the implementation of such a program is difficult because it is difficult to track results. There are lots of books on how it can be done, and there are lots of schools already doing it. Lots of obstacles, but in the end, I believe that it is what is best for the students in my classroom.

I love this. It all starts with realizing that a 100% should be attainable on EVERY TEST. I think that's a concept most students don't understand. They somehow think that even if you "get" the material, a 100% should be for the birthright gods of the subject. But no, the questions on the test are from the material taught. If you understand the material taught, you should be able to answer every single question correctly. Once people realize that mastery is possible, this mastery-based learning will work wonders, I really really hope.

@evanb.61508 жыл бұрын
Sarah Harvey That is, in my opinion, up to the teaching style. If you ask the students memorizable questions and only teach them enough to memorize and don't go in depth at all and don't test critical application, then that's what you'll get.

Beautiful!! As a self taught musician I relate to this immensely. I had all these gaps in my educational learning that I ended up dropping out of school at my junior year. As it turns out I was using mastery learning in my guitar playing. I used this realization to go back and graduate from high school with honors and on to an associates degree with honors as well. The world needs this. We need everyone’s participation on this to push our limits. Creatively and otherwise.

I’m also a musician who dropped out junior year. When you went back, did you do community college or online? I want to go back too. Congratulations btw. The public school environment is not for everyone. Clearly there are more people who fail in that environment yet who are more than capable of mastering the material.

This video really highlighted why Khan Academy has been helpful to so many. Freely available with internet connection, in-depth, and on a HUGE array of subjects. You truly cannot underestimate how much they have helped students all over the globe. Especially with many schools having to rush into online learning with teachers struggling, Khan Academy has been invaluable. As for the look at the education system, I wholeheartedly agree. Sal Khan's point about even the passing student still missing some part of the fundamental was very insightful to me, because I have fallen into the trap of thinking that if my grade is okay, then I've mastered the concept.

I felt completely lost in my first university calculus class and the professor was filling the whiteboard with all those numbers. He did not explain the little details/basics because he assumed that a college student would already know them (and was unwilling to waste time explaining these). I saw that many students were able to follow when I couldn't and I thought with resignation that I was just mathematically-challenged. I wish subjects were mastery-based. It does sound absurd for people to have to pass time deadlines and move on when not everyone got a near-complete mastery. Universities put professors under scrutiny when the majority of their students get an 'A' and students are expected to fall in a bell-shaped distribution. Why can't everyone learn at their own pace?

I have always been an amazing math student, awards for being best in my class almost every year, and during class, I always thought that the student that kept asking questions on the simplest ideas or said "I'm lost" after a teacher explained a two-step, single variable equation in high school was holding me back, that I could be much farther ahead if I wasn't stuck with students in my class like this, and I was thinking "Alright the system needs to change, just set higher expectations, the students that can't keep up will likely not succeed anyway, so just help the good ones" Yes I know this was rude, but my little brain back then thought this. Watching this video I realized, well, what if everyone DID have their own pace of learning be matched at school. The good students will be ahead and the students that are struggling will get the help they need

This makes so much sense to me. The way the education system works in NZ the biology courses are built on top of each other. Basically the definitions of terms get hugger as you go through school. This does mean that people don't understand why things work the way they do in level one or two. People learn for the topic and what it requires rather than actually learning it. I found, when I struggled I actually went forwards and learnt the next years concept I had a better understanding of my currently topic. This was because I was actually understanding rather than regurgitating information for an exam.

'Hard work' is misleading, I used to get ~50% in school, and now in collage I get 90%-100% on average, why? because I'm doing things that I enjoy. is it sometimes a bit of work? sure, but 'hard work' makes it sound arduous, which it definitely does not have to be.
