Why do so many of us get nervous when public speaking? Communication expert Lawrence Bernstein says the key to dealing with the pressure is as simple as having a casual chat. He introduces the "coffee shop test" as a way to help you overcome nerves, connect with your audience and deliver a message that truly resonates. (Recorded at TEDxRoyal Holloway on January 27, 2024)

Okay wow the coffee shop test with Jim really shows how differently we put things when we feel that pressure to be professional rather than personable!

This makes so much sense, it's essentially just storytelling and people love stories!! -- if they're told right. You gotta go for that emotional connection first!

Key Takeaways: 1. Focus on Relevance: Tailor your message to what matters most to your audience. 2. Use Stories: Engage listeners with relatable examples instead of overloading them with details. 3. Prioritize Content: Concentrate on delivering valuable insights, not on how you appear or sound.

Thank you Alina - really appreciate the summary. The top line is, simply 'how would I explain this to (and make it interesting for) a friend who had no prior knowledge'. Very good luck with all your public speaking! Lawrence

'It's a bit like going to the doctor when you've got hay fever and lots of sneezing and saying 'Can you help me?' and he says 'Get a softer tissue'. It doesn't really stop you sneezing. What you really want is the antihistamine. And for public speaking, the antihistamine is your content.' I really like this metaphor!

Such great advice, I once had to introduce a performance by my school to 10,000 people and I just had to pretend that no one was there. Thankfully the lights were so bright I couldn't really see anyone in the audience anyway!

I've always found a good way to put yourself in a more conversational state is rip a few shots before you have to present. Gotta get the balance right though, kinda like when you've had just enough drinks to be in the zone where you're a god a pool.

There's a difference between remembering your speech and knowing your speech. I was the guy who had an epic script, but could never nail it because I'd be a nervous wreck, now I just prepare dot points and riff off those.

Sorry, but not a great talk full of rookie mistakes. You could even see some audience members tuning out Needs more BLUF, better/clearer organization, and a few more visuals (he had one pic on the screen for 15 minutes). For a better ex, watch someone like Steve Jobs for even 10 minutes. I like the Coffee Test but that's about it

God loves you and cares for you so that this message reaches you. God is the one who created this large universe and controls it completely. The greatest loss a person loses in this life is that he lives without knowing God who created him and knowing the Messenger of Muhammad, the last of the messengers, and the Islamic religion, the last of the heavenly religions. Great intelligence, before you believe in something or not, is to read it, study it, and understand it well, and after that you have the choice to believe in it or not to believe in it. I advise you to do this now, before you no longer have time to do so. Life is very short. It is just a test, just a passage to eternal life. Great advice to those who... Understands
