More than a decade ago, roboticist Dennis Hong debuted a new generation of cutting-edge robots on the TEDx stage. Now he's back to reveal how his lab at UCLA has eclipsed its own achievements with a fleet of wildly advanced and delightful humanoid robots. Part demo, part time capsule, part glimpse of the future, Hong brings you into the excitement and potential of the next evolution in robotics engineering.

Doesn't matter how they look like, These are surely great machines. The advancement in robotics will literally change every thing, every sector. Along with these machines embedded with AI and machine learning capabilities are leading us to a great future. But we should also keep eyes on the darkest part of it. What if one day they demand for there rights and democracy or even start a war without permission

Ah, what a cynic I have become. I remember when TED talks started, how excited I would be every time I came across one. What revelation from some deep thinker, talented researcher, or imaginative innovator, would amaze and enrich my own understanding today? But TED talks became increasingly infected by the crass, the petty, and worst of all people who only think they have something to say. What has Dennis Hong got to say? Sadly I'm not minded to find out.

I think you were on to something with the very light robots. The fact the new one was made from heavy solid metal was a disappointment. Design a robot that is cheap very durable and soft. This will facility machine learning a much faster rate. We need robots that are desiged to fail, get back up and try again. Also with soft materials there is much less chance of them damaging themselves, the environment or animals. With a soft durable robot it could be left to itself to use machine learning to work out its own optimum solution to locomotion. You could leave it in a room running all night with the lights.off while it tries different motions. This stuff is just too time consuming for humans to be drudging through with millions of man hours. Once basic locomotion is achieved it could be sent to do more demanding tasks and learn efficient technics. Even Boston dynamics don't get this right. I see them toiling away in the code, fine tuning code.

I'm going to state the obvious, why not robots with legs and wheel feet? It's not a new concept, so why is all this research going down a dead end path? Heck, humans add wheels with their bodies all the time.

Add some timestamps TED! Talk about lazy! Anyway, IMHO Ballu is a terrible design/idea. Aside from entertainment (and even then, there must be about 100 more entertaining concepts b4 u'd get to this!), this can't have many practical applications and lets not forget, helium is a finite resource!

This is man's attempt at creating duplicating living animate invention(s)! NOT LIFE!!! These animated machines havenot one ~breathe~ of true-life!!! Also,, these engineers probably are missing the VERY IMPORTANTBY-PRODUCT of their intentional engineering workl!!! These engineers may be missing the most important learning moment about robotics!!! They have shown us, the world,, that just as in CREATING robots,, we human beings, and ALL ANIMATE LIFE needed a supreme intelligence with ~intentional engineering~ in advance of their creation!!! The old saying: "FORM ALWAYS FOLLOWS FUNCTION" is a constant standard!!! These engineers have to agree on this standard!!! If an animate object comes into being as ~matter~, the standard of, ~F. F. F.~ (form follows function!) shows us that ~form~ must have engineered features, just like those different robots!! So, advanced design/engineering can only come from an ~engineer mind~!~ But who or what force exists that can a) create matter (even though 1st. law of thermo-dynamics denies the possibility, b) use laws & mathmatics and create engineering features, c) and last but not least, create ~life~ !?!?
