No disrespect to Bhop and his wonderful accomplishment, but it's hard to disagree with Teddy. Even the no name fighters from earlier eras had decent technique and knowledge of how to handle different situations in the ring.

@QRF11B Spot on. Hopkins loves comparing himself to the old timers but the likes of Archie Moore and Ezzard Charles never spent an entire fight whining about imaginary low blows or put on stinkfests like Hopkins does on a regular basis.

@Taylorslade12313 жыл бұрын
Going by Atlas' way of thinking, we should all just stop watching boxing, because according to him, it is not possible for a modern fighter to do enough to put himself up with the greats of the past, because they fought much more often, sometimes several times a week. Whilst I acknowledge that fighters from that era deserve a massive amount of praise for doing so, it doesn't diminish what a dominant modern fighter can achieve....read on....

Ha! I thought I was the only one who interpreted Teddy the same way. He was trying to be smart by inferring that younger guys don’t really know how to fight 😄
@Taylorslade12313 жыл бұрын
And as (at least in my opinion) one of the best things about being a boxing fan, is watching guys go from being young fighters, and go all the way to the top. And as a fight fan, when we watch guys like Mayweather and Pacquiao achieve great things, one of the reasons that watching them do those great thing, is because we want to see what heights they can go to, and waiting to see the next all time great fighter join the legends of history is a big part of it, but Atlas thinks that cant happen.
@TheRmm19765 жыл бұрын
This was a rare instance when Teddy was wrong, and frankly he comes across as disrespectful in trying to downplay Hopkins' achievements. Hopkins was incredibly gifted and what he did at his age was amazing. Props to Hopkins for not going off on Teddy in this interview, and just agreeing to disagree.
@chayilel980411 жыл бұрын
Teddy cannot argue, because he's not in the ring beating young guys, no matter the skill level... These youngins still have reflexes, speed etc. over aging fighters; B-Hop is legendary, and he was right, no matter the era he would still hold his own. I agree with u villa1991

Two badasses. it's ok to disagree with someone, and you don't have to change others' opinions when you know they differ from your own all the time, that said it made for an entertaining talk but I hope neither of these guys felt emotionally charged or invested and I hope neither one of them felt like a the victor or the loser as it's just an discussion/debate
@Taylorslade12313 жыл бұрын
When you hear Atlas talk, it's no surprise that a lot of people today, like casual boxing fans that only watch the superfights, or the "take it or leave it" fans, or the mainstream media in general, and also the everyday guy on the street who doesnt know any better, when you hear him talk like this, it's no wonder that they all think that fighters today can't fight for shit, and that they are no good guys now, and that the top guys are just the best of a bad bunch. He is so negative its unreal

Teddy is almost saying that on that night, Pascal was totally different and rubbish where he clearly was not before. You gotta realise Teddy that that is to with Bernard, he made him do what he wanted, he wound him up, he got him frustrated so he was throwing wide punches. This fight was psychological as well as physical, and Bernard won that part easily.

I really would like to know how the hell Bradley lost so shamefully against Pac when he had such a master of the craft and coach who I'm sure gave him so much wisdom and clarity about how to fight properly and win.
@kapayako14513 жыл бұрын
His reasoning is very much a reflection of who he is, trying find significance of a by gone era...himself. Though he is entitled with his opinion, he is simply trying to get a spotlight thrown in his direction and not to the re-emergence of the sports. Boxing had its fair share of decline. Now, it is enjoying great momentum no thanks to very athletes he is trying desperately to put down and throw under the bus by not giving them credit they deserve.

@leon170184 I personally do not think that Teddy was being disrespectful. All he is trying to say is that if Bernard fought in a more competitive era e.g. Haggler, Hearn and leonard era, when people fought more often. Then he would not last as long. Fighters today do not possess the same level of basic fundlemental skills, when compared with previous generations. As a result, Hopkins, who is an old school fighter, is able to look good against young fighters.
@JimmyJocksAye12 жыл бұрын
I think that I agree with teddy that pascal is not a level with Bernard in terms of boxing technique and ability. Pascal is a world class operator but remember he is a small light heavyweight and if you look at the fighters that Bernard has exposed it has been super middleweights in the wrong division. Bhopal is a legend but teddy has a point in some respects.

What Teddy Atlas is saying makes a lot of sense because these guys like Pascal are really not good solid fighters who have not learn the fundamentals of boxing like B-hop has. That's why B-hop is a master at what he does. He has mastered the craft where as these younger guys have not mastered the craft. B-hop is not making these guys fight the way he wants them to fight, this is the way they fight all the time. B-hop is the master schooling the students who are not on his level.

well lets be fair, he was rude to say this on tv like this when he could have said it in person off camera, but Teddy is 100% correct. Bernard beat a guy who is slow, uses no jap and throws wild punches that even an armature boxer doesn't throw. Pascal was a paper champion and we seen what Bernard does at this age against a proven champion in Calzaghe.
@arsenalfanrichi11 жыл бұрын
They're both right, I think Atlas is a little bit demeaning about Hopkins ability, Regardless of being 46/47/48 he would always be an extremely tough fight for anyone in any era in any weight. Whereas Atlas implied he was only competitive because of the weakness of the divisions nowadays. I Respect both of them though

teddy's right.... but you gotta give it up to bernard..... chad's know's how to control range, he's got a jab and is a solid all-round boxer but still couldn't handle pascal.... bernard brought him down to his level.... he's a master at that, that's why people all ways think bernard's boring, because he can alter his opponents style - he'll make exciting boxer's fight tense and cagey.... sure pascal threw wide punches, but who throw's straighter punches than kelly pavlik? dawson look out!

Well Mr. Atlis is absolutely right, you're only as good your competition. It would be an entirely different story if Mayweather, Jones Jr, Hopkins fought in the 70's or 80's era when it was MONSTERS in the ring like, Hagler, Herns, Sugar Ray, Iran Barkley, young De la hoya, Julio cesar chavez, Hector macho camacho, and so many more gorillas. I respect all fighters but Mr. Hopkins is a dirty fighter who flops and pretends... But those are some sweet ass glasses he's wearing!

I used to have respect for Teddy Atlas, but now after hearing all of the bullshit he has said latley, that respect is long gone. I don't know what his problem with Pacquiao is, but it's clear to see he has something against him that is outside of how he rates him as a fighter. Comparisons of a great athlete or athletes of a different era is pointless, except 4 the fact there were never as much performance enhancement drugs & video footage of so so many great fighters 2 study. Comparing Royce Gracie to George Saint Pierre or Micheal Jordan to Koby Briant or Sugar Ray Leonard to Floyd Mayweather, betrays truth, U do what U have 2 do 2 win when faced with the competition that is put before U, the more recent champions were inspired by footage of the past champions.

But you are not in the same league physically than most of these fighters or in 2011. Floyd Mayweather isn't at it welterweight. Teddy is right guys like you Floyd, etc have a skill level that surpasses every fighter today, there's nothing wrong with that. Had you have no skill you'd be looking like Roy my favorite fighter. You're not gonna put a 28 year old you vs 40 year old you cause of the physical side. the skill is there on both sides but the physical side will prevail cause youre not there. These fighters physicality is there but the skill is not and that's why you are who you are cause the skill, it showed vs sergey kovalev as well.
