Hi Everyone, thanks for watching! I believe as watch enthusiasts we get very caught up in our passion and forget how absurd collecting these small objects for our wrists can be. My hope for this video (and others to follow in this series) is to showcase an outside perspective on watches and also to pull in those that might be interested to learn a bit more about something I am very passionate about. The previous reaction video didn't land how I intended, but I wanted to continue this style of video as everyone involved had a blast taking part. I think it is important to provide a gut check that these are just watches at the end of the day. Have a great weekend and thanks for all the support!

Just a question if I may. I, unfortunately, did not see the previous video but understand that there was something in that video that incited negative comments. My question is, is this the same video but edited to remove that particular part, or is this a new video in the same series? If this is a new video will you ever release an edited version of the first video? Thanks in advance! Best regards Adam

One big point of incongruency that I notice between "watch people" and "not-watch-people" is the importance of the strap. A non-enthusiast will turn their nose up at an entire watch on account of its strap. Just goes to show how much you can potentially boost the look of any given piece just by swapping the (usually) cheapest part.

But heres the thing, people buy other cars, cheaper bourbons, and clothes in general. Which means Ford can keep selling F150s and yet be able to sell Ford GT to enthusiasts. Same for other examples, but for watches people aren't buying watches for the expensive watches to stay alive thats the problem here. The market is shrinking for regular watches as smart phones and smartwatch sale keeps sky rocketing. I fear regular watches in general are going to end up being a niche product and sadly die 20-30 years later instead of like cars which still have a thriving market.

What impressed me the most was the genuine politeness and almost zero defensive behavior throughout. That alone is light years away from any enthusiast hobby. I do like that you addressed the marketing, or lack thereof, within this demographic. Enthusiasts will seek out information but why are luxury watch brands not trying to entice new buyers into the fold? I will say that this is about the best example you could use to prove why Rolex is positioned the way it is today. These people have almost zero Watch knowledge but many knew of Rolex. FTR, it has always been that way. Nicely done Teddy. That was entertaining and informative.

To some degree it may be a matter of the luxury brands getting into the mindframe that, hey, we're luxury brands, the kind of people who would buy our brands will find us. aka "if you have to ask..." To compare to another significant-expense product, sure, I see advertising for Lincoln/Cadillac/Lexus/Jaguar in mainstream media .. but not for Lambo/Rolls/Bugatti. And the thing is it's not even a matter of exclusivism: if you have the money the luxury brands will sell to you. But since they do not *need* mass market, why seek it.
@thenutcracker2921
@thenutcracker2921 2 жыл бұрын
@@chedelirio6984 I think you’re right about the legitimate high end brands, that you compared to Rolls/Bugatti, not needing to advertise to the mainstream. I do, however, believe lesser brands need to pull their heads out. These kids aren’t even aware of TAG and that is absolutely a mainstream brand. It’s the age of smartphones and watches are redundant so it makes sense new generations are completely uninterested in mechanical watches. The key is convincing them these archaic oddities are worthy of their interest. High end horology will always have an audience because it’s a status symbol for the wealthy but low to mid-tier brands have a much harder time positioning themselves and new buyers are critical to their survival. Yes, those young people who have no interest now but attain wealth later in life will discover luxury watches. Everyone else will be clamoring for the latest smartwatch. Keep in mind this whole smart tech era is extremely new so the vast majority of people on this planet remember when telling time on the go was done exclusively with a watch. Once that metric shifts it will be much harder to lure people to the light.
@chedelirio6984
@chedelirio6984 2 жыл бұрын
@@thenutcracker2921 Yes, it's a tough one for the "middle class" brands with the newer generations. Part of the problem being that as you noticed, before the new generation attains wealth... and even when they get comfortable enough, but not RICH rich, they'll go "wait, what, that thing costs as much as TWO iPhones??" (not pausing to consider that the only reason an iPhone costs what it does is they are willing to pay that AND that's something they *know* is going to depreciate massively and be obsolete in five years). If you are TAG how do you convince this generation this is worth it when if what you want is just something that looks elegant on your wrist and tells time accurately there are plenty of Casios, Seiko5, Timexes etc. that do the job.
@thenutcracker2921

@@chedelirio6984 The same way you sell them $200 jeans. Once you build the desire they will find the means. For many, that may cap out at $80 jeans but it’s still much higher than $30. Likewise, there will be people able to swing a $5k watch while others can’t go beyond $1500. In other words it’s the same as it has always been with commerce; build the brand, create hype, and watch them flock to your product. As you stated we/they already pay an exorbitantly high overpricing of phones. Convincing people mechanical watches are built to last, are extremely cool, and won’t become obsolete in a year should be a cake walk. If brands like Richard Mille can snow millionaires into their ridiculous hype it should be easy to market moderately priced alternatives that are actually worth the asking price. Yeah, all these influencers and social media/online forums echo chambers cause a crazy disconnect. Not just with watches, but a whole lot of luxury items like perfumes, leather items. Even ideologies. That's the very definition of an echo chamber. Here in India, many work awfully hard just to survive. And yet, the ANNUAL median wage of $2500. It would take one a 100 years to just buy a watch. Imagine how unconcievable that is to us.

This kind of video is really enjoyable to watch for some reason. We were all non-watch enthusiasts as one point, so I think on some level the thing that makes this interesting are the surprises in the reactions to a largely new sub-culture that most of us have all experienced to some degree (unless you grew up around watches). There's also the aspect of outsiders reacting to a sub-culture/hobby that you're personally into, which makes you feel a sort of connection to the people... I think that's why reaction videos to music, movies, comedians etc. are so popular, because people like watching other people react to stuff that they are personally into. That may sound somewhat narcissistic, but I think it's about connecting with people and feeling like your passion has been shared, which in a strange way makes you feel seen.

Love your videos Teddy! Just a note of advice on the second part of the video where the test subjects react to cheaper watches, a lot of their overestimations have to do with anchoring. You started them off extremely expensive pieces which set their expectations really high. A good way to mitigate this effect would be to not reveal the prices until the very end. If I am wrong in thinking this, please correct my error.
@toshaks
@toshaks 2 жыл бұрын
I think that's exactly the idea. Have the subjects realize how expensive the luxury watch world is and reset their baseline. Then have them guess cheap ones. It shows clearly people can't tell the difference between the two and if you reset their baseline they can never guess. The success of the video is not the subjects guessing it right, it's actually for us to realize, just buy the watch for what it's worth to you.

As far as quartz movements go, they’re going to be accurate, more so than any mechanical. For something like a Fossil, Casio or Timex, it comes down to the materials used to finish it. I would guess there’s only like a couple mass manufacturers of digital quartz movements, but i want to say Casio makes all their stuff because they’ve historically made calculators and they have the capability of creating very nice quartz oscillators.

Very enlightening as entertaining..... makes me take pause of my 20+ watch collection. That being said it’s fun and I collect because it is satisfying to me. Watch collecting must be personal to be rewarding.

The sad thing iss, people who don't appreciate certain things tend to mistreat them. For me, even if I don't appreciate something, I still am careful handling it.

Some day, some day... that's the dream. Personally, I'm not into watches (or cars, or clothes, etc.) as aspirational objects. I just like the idea of good value and if it's reliable. Always appreciate things that just work well, have high quality materials and craftsmanship, but the main factor is usability, not impressive looks.

I am thinking of that watch each time some rapper show us RM and iced PPs, APs. To be honest its same like with Ferrari if I was given monkey for free I would have hard time paying for bananas.

Wow, I would assume they got a couple of them right... But yeah, Millennials tend to be on the more Frugal side of things... Me personally I wouldn't spend more than 500 ish on a watch... I'm big into casio, citizen, saiko, and I really like the Orient Bambino version 8.... but I guess if I could I would get the Hamilton field watch but I wish it came with the day & date and not just the date.... I'm actually picking up the Citizen Weekender Garrison Field Watch BU2055-16E next month over the Hamilton due to it being cheaper plus for an everyday watch I don't think I want to deal with a automatic... when I hear automatics I think more business casual, or investment watch.... but currently I'm using the Casio Pro Trek due to my outdoor activities, and picking up the citizen for my everyday watch... and I do have plans on picking up the version 8 Bambino and maybe the saiko Recraft with green face that square... kind of looks like a reimagined tank watch and thoes two autos I would keep for holidays and special occasions or even date nights.... anyways I know this video is old but I thought I would drop a comment to help 😎✌️

That shows that every one that is buying a watch to flex on non-watch people, won't even know that your watch is more expensive than their apple watch. So moral of the video: Wear what you like, and buy what you will wear cause flexing won't work :D

Super cool video - it's interesting how watches that are "blinged up" or display a different finish (bronze, for instance) are perceived as more expensive, while sportier ones are dismissed. That said, it's nearly impossible for someone who isn't into watches to gauge the value of a Daytona Paul Newman or any kind of valuable and rare vintage time-piece. This whole comparison reminds me of a comic strip a friend sent me when I purchased my first motorcycle, it was something like " what you think will happen (a bunch of girls around a bike, in awe of a guy's coolness" vs "what will really happen (a bunch of dudes / gearheads which ask questions to the owner as they're into the same thing)

My love for watches began when I learned to tell time as a boy and saw my dad putting on his watch every day. I remember speaking to one of my kids' (millennials) teachers during the open house of a new school that had just been constructed and she complained about all of the classroom clocks being digital and the difficulty in teaching kids to tell time. My kids came of age during the iPhone era when they saw very few clock faces or watch dials. It was refreshing to see these young people, especially the young men connecting with watches they might wear to suit their personal style. When they tire of Apple Watches and having to pull their phones out of their pockets, maybe we will have another generation who appreciates the simplicity of a wristwatch.

Great cast of characters and fun to watch. I wouldn't have come close to guessing any of those high-end prices either. Best comment: if it's out of my league I wouldn't save up for it. That's some good advice.

I remember hearing Joe Rogan talk about watches once. He said he owned and regularly wore a Rolex of some sort. After a while he noticed the watch wasn't keeping perfect time so he went to his watch guy to ask him about it. The watch dealer or watchmaker told him, "Yeah that's just how it is with automatic watches." Joe was shocked that for $25,000 his watch would have to be adjusted every couple months to keep the right time. This was very meaningful to me as to how non-watch people view watches. They're an object meant to keep time and look nice. Joe realized he could keep better time with a $20 Casio from Amazon and throw it out when the batter died.

I always avoid Automatic watches due to owning an automatic swatch and dropped it then it lost accuracy. That was 15 years ago. Now i love my Used Sarb033 and amazed everytime i saw it against the sun
