I appreciate Rolex for what it used to be in the 1990s when I first got mine: a tough, well made, accurate and reliable tool watch that had a bit of status, but nothing too flashy. Just simple, understated quality. That you could go into any jeweller in New York, Copenhagen, London, Sydney or Hong Kong and get - at worst - at retail and quite likely a 20% discount. But a combination of brilliant Rolex marketing, increasing wealth throughout the world and clearly not too great increase in Rolex production numbers has seen us land where we have been for the past ~15 years...

You could’ve called it “when marketing ruins a brand”. All three brands with a perception problem put all their eggs in the marketing basket. Hublot did it too early, Panerai reach it’s pinacle and fell down to earth unable to get past the image and Rolex is up in the high atmosphere waiting for the fall (gonna make the biggest crater when it hits the ground). All three brands attract customers with socially unsavory traits. It’s very hard to escape that trap after you fall into it.

Mate you’ve no clue what you’re talking about.. Rolex made and continue to make some of the most collectible and sought after pieces that attract the most established of watch collectors out there… just look at how much some of the vintage models fetch at watch auctions. All brands rely on marketing but marketing can only get you so far if your product and how it’s presented aren’t solid enough. Rolex been on top long before this madness started and it’s not going to bulge.. wishful thinking on your part.

The issue with Shinola is that it was affordable. Most people who live and work in Detroit could not afford anything they offer other than maybe the leather baseball. They should have an affordable brand that the working person can afford., Shinola meant quality and affordability back in the day. Today it represents the gentrifier, the outsider and developer who doesn’t live in the city but exploits it.

Thanks so much! With Panerai, going down to very small amounts of WR on what are essentially iconic dive watch designs on some models, and generally what seem like cost-cutting measures, while having a watch priced well above the Omega range, is one that's turned me off. With Rolex, yeah, everything you already said, and just what flex culture has done with Rolex, and how Rolex has *handled* their well-earned success with what feels like less than, well, class, and honesty...as much respect as I've had for Rolex historically, and as much as I love some of their watches, for now, they've really soured on me.

I think all the hate on Shinola is misplaced- they were essentially a micro brand originally when they began selling the quartz watches. Today they offer a wider range of automatic options. I also think their pricing is reasonable for what they offer (similar to some of Longines lower priced offerings). I think the problem is with people that don’t appreciate the Detroit tie in. If Detroit assembly is important to you, Shinola makes sense. If it isn’t, Shinola does not. I am from Michigan and I feel it’s fair to say that Shinola has become the go to entry luxury brand for the upper-middle class working professional. I agree with most of the points Teddy mentioned on why some people love to hate on Rolex but here’s my take on it: 1- Frustration from not being able to get a Rolex at retail within a short period of time. This then turns into bitterness towards Rolex, and jealousy from those who were able to buy one. 2- People being fed up with whole flexing and hype culture, and speculators who only care about investment value . Rolex is not the only brand that suffer from this, PP and AP are in this camp as well. But because Rolex watches represent over 90% of the above, they get the most hate. 3- Childish fanboys of other watch brands that envy the success and hype surrounding Rolex. So they click on every article or video that has “Rolex” in it’s thumbnail and start spewing hatred in the comments section. Some Omega and GS fanboys are particularly guilty of that. Other examples of this childish fanboyism are Apple vs Android and Playstation vs Xbox. 4- The too cool for school/indie type of people who like to be different and therefore hate anything mainstream. Rolex will probably be their main target for hating. On the other, you’ll rarely find an established and long term watch collector/lover who doesn’t admire and respect the history, achievements and success of Rolex.

My 2 Shinola watches were $170USD for a Detrola and $266 USD for a Runwell. I am uncertain why price would be an objection as their third tier of hate, but maybe few people shop as smartly as I do. Still, regardless of your feelings about marketing and patriotism, as a former Detroit resident I am very happy to have these two watches in my collection. If you want a watch to hate based on price, look no further than an Omega Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch, which is manual wind well over $10k CAD where I now live and needs a $600 service roughly every 48 months unless you don’t care what time it is.

Also because hublot prices watches high but makes them low quality. Uses 3rd party movements, if you look at the screws they are never aligned even tho that attention to detail would be expected at that price. Also many of them look like shit and made of cheap materials like Richard millel but Richard millel actually does cool stuff sometimes

On Shinola, I really like their look and being from Michigan, I don’t mind supporting jobs in my state (even if they’re a tad pricey for what you get). Honestly, the questionable marketing is less of a gripe for me than how much they lean into the 47mm sizing. I’m a tall guy with about a 7.5” wrist, so they don’t look awkward on me, but I’m the minority…

Michigander here: I have never understood the fascination with shinola. Fit and finish look great. The dials are crisp and well done. Nice sapphire crystal. And then boom, the hammer drops. 600 bucks for an out-sourced quartz movement with no horology and some questionable marketing tactics. There are just so many companies like Vaer where I just bought an S5 for 250 bucks. Lumed, sapphire, stainless steel case, screw down crown, screw down case back, very nice stainless steel bracelet and black rubber strap. So many other companies that can blow shinola out of the water in price point.

I own three Shinolas. I almost owned a fourth, but returned it due to lack of QC. Here's my beef: I purchased a Black Blizzard which came with a black bezel and numbered in white. Within a few months of daily wear the numbers were rubbing off, and had rubbed off completely within 6 months. I have an office job. I'm not banging my knuckles every day. On the other hand, my Smokey Bear and White Hurricane are great watches. I sent back the Forged Carbon Monster in February this year because it looked like a return (the box had a graphic torn off, the watch was crookedly jammed in the presentation box, the strap looked like it had been worn). I love the story of providing jobs and training to Detroit workers, but I no longer have confidence they are providing quality, so much so that I started looking to see whether the company had been purchased or had a management change.

The role of marketing in attracting customers that give a brand its image can’t be underestimated. The brand ambassadors are less significant than the impression that existing customers might have other potential customers. How some watch enthusiasts will always say seeing a Rolex on someone’s wrist is not a sign that wearer isn’t a fellow watch enthusiast. Same for Hubot, footballers people with more money than knowledge. Panerai, muscle men of the 90s making superhero movies with out the costumes.

So, Rolex (obvs). I think the problem with Rolex boils down to a couple of simple questions. Firstly, why are Cartier, Omega and so on luxury brands? Because we the consumers say they are luxury brands. Why is Rolex a luxury brand? Because Rolex says Rolex is a luxury brand and there is a pervasive suspicion that Rolex distorts the market to support this assertion. In other words, Rolex, not the consumer, is the final arbiter in the argument of luxury vs not luxury. Pretty ingenious. At some level I’m fine with this though I appreciate the peer pressure that may lead to individual concerns when it comes to transparency and availability.

The screws on the Hublot not even being aligned is just such an eyesore, especially considering the price. I know with most other brands they're fake, while the ones on the Hublot are real, but still. They're charging so ridiculously much money, even if it meant making their own screws, that are always 1:1 the same in terms of head/thread orientation, they should do it.

Rolex is arguably the same quality as Omega, but gets a lot of hate because it rides on brand power and elitist showmanship to justify the great price difference. The fact that availability is lousy and people get miffed over the endless waiting lists and mediocre AD experience definitely adds to gas to the fire.

Rolex doesn't want you to know allocation because it makes a false sense of rarity. We know they make nearly ONE MILLION watches a year. That's a lot. They don't tell you to keep prices high. A single model they made 700k of in a year doesn't seem quite so exclusive.

As a Detroiter, something that also works heavily against Shinola is that every Holiday season they give ALL employees Shinola gift cards as bonuses (even the Starbucks employees in the hotel lobby). This leads to most of them buying the cheaper ref numbers of watches, and then immediately list them on FB marketplace or similar sites for as much as half off flooding the market. (Also anecdotally they get a bad rap locally because they have a stereotype of being the first thing everyone at the big Quicken loans office downtown buys with their first paycheck, and that company and its employees are heavily stereotyped because the employees are worked into the ground and the ones that make it get the reputation of "finance bros".) Shinola has sort of become the uh... "Live, Laugh, Love" of Detroit branding.

Hublot is basically an extremely overpriced Invicta fashion watch. Panerai is similar but has had quality issues. Rolex makes good watches but they have allowed or promoted the situation of their watch scarcity to get completely out of hand and have burned a lot of bridges with their loyal customers. In the long run I think that this will hurt them, because genuinely classy people know that this is abusive, and once the hype ends I think that it is going to tarnish Rolex's image. Shinola is simply trading on nostalgia and false hope.

Hi Teddy, I totally agree with you on Rolex. They have made their brand and watch desirable by restricting the supply and not being transparent. Recently we saw a swatch moonswatch ($250 retail price) was selling in the secondary market for thousands of dollars due to lack of availability. Imagine if Omega does the same thing what rolex is doing with its speedmaster moonwatch. It can raise its desirability and price in the secondary market to stratospheric levels. No other luxury swiss watch brand plays this game like Rolex. Though PP and AP have many watches lacking in supply but those watches are way beyond most people's reach even on a good day.. Good luck to all those people who are queing up for rolex to eventually sell in the secondary market. For that price I would buy a JLC or Blancpain with beautiful and sophisticated movements any day of the week.

Not being transparent: yes, restricting the supply: no. Rolex produces more watches than any other luxury watchmaker, but can’t cope with the demand, and of course production cannot be increased limitlessly. Given the demand they would be more than happy to sell as many watches as the people is asking for, but this would mean doing huge capex investments.

The problem Panerai has is it’s design. The Luminor is the Panerai most people want and I am giving it as an example. So the question is, how many variations one can do within the confines of the Luminor’s body? Unfortunately not many. Some complications, dial colors, case materials and size. So I don’t understand it’s critics. The 38mm DUE has 30m water resistance because it’s case has to be proportionally scaled down. It is made to suit ladies and thin wristed gentlemen who want to wear a Panerai. What’s wrong with it? Then the company made the Quaranta, which in my opinion is an exceptional watch. It has a beautiful proportionate case with 40mm diameter and 100m of water resistance. This watch can be worn literally by anyone and in any occasion. A genuine “strap monster” too. And of course there are the larger diameter models like the 42, 44 and 47mm for the enthusiasts seeking 100% genuine Panerai experience and wrist presence. We have a plethora of movements and complications within the catalog as well. So literally there is a Panerai for everyone. Panerai! Possibly the most recognizable watch design in the industry.
