I'm not a fan of Hublot either, but to say it's hated because of being shown off or overpriced is a bit hypocritical considering plenty of people buy Rolex and AP Royal Oaks to flex. AP charging $20k for a stainless steel watch with a three hand movement and date is moronic too, but people happily pay through the noise for the status. Rolex charges $8100 for a stainless steel Submariner with a basic three hand movement and an ugly undecorated movement, but no one bats an eye. They also charge an extra grand for just adding a date to your Submariner which is incredibly moronic. Luxury watches in general are overpriced and to hate on another brand doing it's own thing is petty and immature. Watch snobs are distasteful. Just let other people enough what they want.
@tiniceek79453 жыл бұрын
AMEN 20 for the AP and 28K for the Nautilus are totally moronoic. Most of the cost in any swiss product comes from the labor a skilled worker here gets around 6000 to 7000 CHF a month a bit over $7200 but that still doesn't make any sense for the Nautilus that isn't really better finished to cost 8k more. And if you couldn't sell the AP and Nautiluses for more than you get them nobody would buy them just like Hublots. They are better watches but still not worth the money.

Richard Mille is a marketing genius though. Makes essentially plastic watches with less waterproofing and strength, let alone accuracy, than most 50 dollar seikos. Puts anywhere from 250k-1million price tag on them, gives some away to some celebs, dumb rappers and basketball players to market for him...and boom, you have a "luxury" brand. Crap quality at high end price, marketed to dumb people. Its like the modern Louis Vuitton bag. Lesser quality than in their past. Cheap material thats practically canvas with spray rubber, marketed as "leather", that practically falls apart if you set it on floor, in the sun, or get it wet. But they switched from actual quality, to marketing just the old LV name to the rapper community. The watch cases are very large bulky and look like they're props from the fantastic 4. Unlike you I've never worn an RM so I can't speak to any of those things.
@fVNzO2 жыл бұрын
@Clay1404 Yes the skeleton movements are very nice. I just feel like, when you make retail watches in the range of 80-500K (i believe they are), having their primary benefit be something that really doesn't make much sense anyway, to actually use the watch while doing sports - it's a bit dumb. Imagine wearing your 200K watch playing football or tennis. It doesn't make any sense. It would just get in your way, let alone be subject to undue wear with an item that's more expensive than most apartments. It quite literally is *the most* useless piece of technology in watchmaking. That's not to say that an AP or Patek or rolex isn't (because of their pricing in particular) but they're a far cry from the likes of RM and actually do serve the function of being discreet time keeping devices - that also happen to, in pateks case be better finished. All mechanical watches are essentially useless from a practical standpoint, but RM are just *the most* useless ones. Is my opinion. For my money, i would enjoy a fine nomos watch, a BB58 or a GS. All very competitively priced and all excessively accurate and well put together. They provide plenty satisfaction in mechanical curiosity and material finishing, all at 5% the price of an RM. And that's not to discredit your point, off course it's nice to be light and wearable. That's my number one focus. But plenty of 2-5K watches are impressively thin and light.

I understand the criticisms of Hublot but I adore the design, personally, and luckily paid cash so I got a very decent chunk off the sticker price anyway (and no tax ... ;) ) A note on your criticisms of the bolts not lining up though... I could be wrong, but I remember reading on forums that they are not allowed to line the bolts up like an Audemars because Audemars had trademarked that look against Hublot, as they were first to the design idea. So instead, Hublot have to have sporadic bolt angles. Also worth mentioning, I believe the Audy doesn't actually have screws, they are just nuts stuck into place and aren't actually holding the case together. Whereas Hublot actually uses Screws holding the bezel to the case. I believe that's correct but don't quote me on it. Either way, great video mate, really enjoyed it. @RA CW Riiight...because Rolex their heritage is so rich right. Rolex was definitely pumped with innovation before the 1970. Like the Daytona (does Valjoux ring you any bells because it should) or the pre-1530 calibers. Or before incorporating Aegler to justify "in-house movements". Give it a rest. I hate people bashing on Hublot while parroting the same excuse of a praise about Rolex. Are you going to claim that Zenith El Primero chronomaster sport is a trend copy of the daytona? “Sturdy but cheap materials” Like what? “Using cheap movements” Imagine thinking that every movement from ETA is cheap. Just because they’re not in-house doesn’t mean they are cheap. If you can tell me the difference between putting an ETA movement in a Hublot and Rolex having incorporated an entire production site under company ownership to do the exact same thing except claiming now that it’s “in-house”, I’ll give you a point. You tend to forget that Rolex still mass produces certain watch models like the date-just and the submariner(date). Almost everything Rolex claims to be the first, have innovated or achieved were already done by previous watchmakers by sometimes even preceding decades. Or that there is always a caveat. Perfect example is Rolex their claim of the Oyster being the first waterproof wristwatch however that’s bs. The first waterproof wrist watch was the Tavannes submarine wristwatch. There are so many beautiful watchmakers who deserve your praise and Rolex isn’t one of them. You either accept it or you don’t. I bought a Big Bang back in around 2004 (very early version with the PVD screws) and loved it. Hublot seemed pretty much unknown outside enthusiast circles. They had some great looking pieces alongside the BB and really appealed to my “stealth wealth” wish to own watches nobody had heard of. I even had personal interaction with JCB himself which further enamoured me to the brand. Five years later, they were well and truly on the “Special Edition” bandwagon and when the Manchester United Edition came out, my BB had to go - that Wayne Rooney might have one turned me off completely. I had no idea they had become so detested, but it seems what killed my love did the same to many more. Shame really.

They’re not my cup of tea but I don’t get the hate design-wise. The pricing is absurd though.

As soon as you said 10,000 I laughed out loud! Granted I tend to feel the same toward people who buy huge Rolex encrusted with diamonds. Bling is just not my thing. Great channel!

I actually thought that was what watched were about, watching rappers and social media people not talk about the mechanics and making of watches but merely the dollar amount they paid for them. Good to hear there’s quality and art behind these insane price tags
@canadianwatchmonkey39923 жыл бұрын
If Rolex can charge the prices that they do then Hublot can. It’s all about marketing and less about the actual watch. Just think what would happen to the Prices of Rolex if they actually supplied the demand. Oldest trick in the book make supply scarce and people will pay whatever.

It seems most of the criticisms levelled at Hublot here could also be levelled (to a slightly less degree) at Rolex. I don't see that big a difference.

My issue with Hublot is simple. I don’t like their models and they are super mega overpriced. I have a datejust and an explorer, there’s another lever. My opinion only.

What you stated about Hublot can be said for every other luxury watch company out there, all of them are way overpriced and meant for people to show off. How can you hate Hublot and not hate Richard Mille, Patek Phillipe, Audemars Piguet...etc, look at their ridiculous prices and you're complaining about a 20k watch?????
@davidstjohn79433 жыл бұрын
It's a fashion watch. If a fashion watch is a watch with a price that is totally out of whack with its horological qualities and where its desirability lies in its accessory status more than its function as a timepiece, then Hublot is a fashion watch.
@mackledee3 жыл бұрын
I think this is probably the most accurate description why it's hated. Watch nerds hate fashion watches. End of story. If they could somehow pull a Bulgari and make a beautifully finished timepiece with a cool in-house calibre, then maybe they could transcend the hatred. Until then. Forget about it.

Agreed! An expensive fashion watch.£10,000+ for an ETA movement?? Buy a Hamilton instead.
