I frankly don’t understand the negativity surrounding this watch. I consider myself a simple guy and I like simple watches. For example, a Sinn 556i has been my daily for the last two years. Personally, I love this watch and will probably own one soon. I’m actually drawn to the “boringness” - it speaks to me.
@steelsteez6118
@steelsteez6118 2 жыл бұрын
I can help explain it to you. The negativity comes from the plain and boring design of the watch. There's nothing wrong (per se) with the watch. It'll suit someone who wants a very plain and simple dial design. It uses high quality parts with an outstanding clasp. However, the negativity is targeted toward the puke green fauxtina and the very simple and boring design especially with all that empty space around the center of the dial. You might like this type of plain design but you are clearly not in the majority. That is why you don't understand the negativity (to you it looks great because you like this type of design). Most (not all) watch enthusiasts that have been in the watch community for years need something a little more exciting than a plain jane field watch like this. This is why most of these people yawned when this was announced 😴. They're looking for something dynamic in a time piece that gives it character or makes it stand out. Again, not all watch enthusiasts, but most. It's why your opinion is not the majority. Hope that helps ❤️.

@@steelsteez6118 yeah that's why the Explorer is also very boring to me. I owned it for a year and sold it after realising I'm not that type of watch enthusiast who likes "versatile" design.

It's about the attitude Tudor is giving towards this release. They are basically Rolex. They are like people gotta buy anything we release anyway as we have the best movement and bracelet at our price level. New design? Sorry next time bro

For me, there's a few things I don't like. The size and font of the numerals being the biggest issues. It just looks a little dated. Applied markers would have also been a nice addition. And the green hue is something that doesn't work on this piece, maybe fauxtina would have looked better (see the Jame Bond Seamaster). But that's just my opinion on this piece.

@@caspar_gomez That's really the issue for most people. Nice movement, finishing and clasp (I think the bracelet itself is nothing special), but if I want a watch that _looks_ minimalistic, there are plenty of good options including homages at a fraction of this price. 100% Bruce. I had a look at this at the new Sydney Tudor Boutique on the weekend. Not looking for a field watch but had to see what the controversy was about. It is far better in person than the detractors could imagine. Like any watch, handle it before you call it. And yes AR coating please! Where an Explorer 1 in NO way backs up its price, this one absolutely does.

Honestly, I think it’s ok. But I can get the same, no, better look from Khaki Field. Sure the bracelet is very good, but you don’t drop $3k on a watch just for the bracelet. Fact is this is getting attention simply because it’s the Rolex sub-brand; every single review on YT and watch media compares it to the Explorer, as do a high proportion of comments. I say that simply because if it said say Fortis, rather than Tudor, on the dial, it would be largely ignored, and reading the comments it sounds like alot of people who’ve picked one up are seeking confirmation that they did the right thing. None of this moves my needle towards considering it. Fundamentally it’s prosaic design lacks that tiny pop, tiny bit of fizz. Perhaps if the hands were white rather than high-polish SS that disappear against the dial, leaving the lume looking incongruous? Perhaps if the second hand tip was yellow or bright green, rather than a somewhat flat red? Perhaps if the Tudor logo was applied, rather than just inexpensively printed? So, it may be VFM compared to an Explorer, but that’s the problem. It’ll always be the ‘cheap’ Explorer, because that’s how most people see it; the younger brother who never made it to med school like his sibling.

The watch idiot channel tried to swap the Tudor pro bracelet onto the 58 and also then just the clasp and apparently Tudor made it impossible to do so due a very small size change of the center links and a tab by the end links of the pro. Apparently Tudor intentionally made it impossible. I have no idea if Tudor did similar to the Ranger to 58 combination swap. Let me know if you find out.

True but at 3k dosen't it look like it should have something more? There are allot of watch brands doing something similar for way less nowadays. Like the hamilton Kahki field for instance. If you're looking for an expensive sleeper this is probably a great watch but when you look at the competition even from good micro brands today this looks lacking. It NEEDS something to stand apart from the rest cause I look at that watch dial and i can count 20 chineese microbrands who've been selling a similar dail on 100 buck watches for years now. Watches with dependable japaneese movments.

Great footage as usual, Bruce. I'm a fan. I think it's a very solid offering for the price. I also tend to agree w/ you about the dial aesthetics.....if it's not for you, then there is always the BB41, or the BB36. Those IMHO, are more traditionally modern offerings. A lot of people don't like the "spade style" hands as well. I'm a fan of those too. The purpose of the model, is to invoke the experience of the rangers, of the Greenland expedition, on a more contemporary and wearable platform. I think they've achieved that here

I think it has potential, but I’m just not a fan as it is. If the numbers were applied instead of painted, that might help.. but I think what gets me most is the off white/yellow look to the numbers. It looks like you’ve got a brand new watch that’s just been sitting in the case for decades and the numbers yellowed over time. Takes away from that new watch feel.

I just purchased the previous 41mm Heritage version of the Ranger and when it came in I was really blown away by how nice it was in person, but I recognized how it would be too large for someone with a smaller wrist. So this new one should really solve that problem and for that reason I think it will be much more popular. The one thing that carries over, the slightly boxed crystal; nobody mentions it, but it really goes a long way to elevate the watch to another level. I love the hands the arabics, the bracelet! The biggest question for me is: now that I have the 41mm should I get the new one too???

I saw this watch at the AD last week and have to agree it looks and feels so much better in the real life. I didn't purchase as I already have watches that cover this segment pretty well right now. I have to admit that I've definitely not ruled it out at all but just not right now. I would have preferred applied lumed ceramic slices like the BB Pro uses (but obviously keeping the same view of the dial) and just maybe text 'Chronometer' in red (to match the end of the seconds hand) beneath the Ranger text. I do find that I'm still warming to it as it is so maybe one for the future.

As someone who recently got the Black Bay Pro, this watch just confuses me. I will admit, if i had the Pro and the Ranger next to one another i would have an interesting conundrum, as both represent everything i love about Tudor and what i wanted out of a watch, a “get out there!” kind of watch. However, why would their make so many surfaces of this brushed (when not on the original ranger) but leave so many surfaces of the “Pro” polished? I look at this and think “why did they brush that part?” and i look at the Pro and think “why didn’t they brush that part?”

Tudor, in house movement, steel case and bracelet, fantastic quick adjust clasp. If you told someone all of those specs I’d bet they’d be pretty excited. And yet…honestly pretty lackluster in my opinion after I saw it in person. Just doesn’t do anything for me, and I think it’s mostly down to the dial being so one dimensional. But hey, if people like it I won’t disparage them! Spec wise it’s a great watch, so if the aesthetics work for them more power to them. For the price you could do *much* worse.

I purchased this watch in May 2023 and it's scratched every itch that a field watch can give you. I'm glad that Tudor made it smaller than the previous version but with that said what would perfect this would be 37mm and a date with cyclops like an older 70s version of a Ranger. Field watches aren't supposed to be flashy and showy so some of the boring complaints are kind of foolish in my opinion. I think Tudor nailed this model.

This is a great watch.Very true to the Rolex/Tudor models that came before it. I've seen it in person at my local AD and it feels great on the wrist. For those thinking they'd prefer a 36mm - the 39mm has a relatively thick bezel so the face appears smaller. I have the 41mm Tudor Heritage Ranger and think it has a bit more personality. I'll be keeping it. Things I wish the new 39mm version had: a rose logo above the TUDOR logo on the face - to match the signed crown; and a full red seconds hand - that would give it a lot of pop. The lume is great, just a touch greener than the 41mm version.

I love the size, movement, bracelet look/T-fit inclusion. All great stuff. I've had the chance to see it in person. All my complaints relate to the numeral font and colour. The numerals look like they were drawn by a third grader. They are large enough that this is readily apparent every time I look at the watch. Also, the green is really, really green. It's one thing if the lume glows green in the sun or in a dark room but when it's just this pale, sickly green all the time, that's a hard pass. Other than the dial, it's darned near the perfect watch. Case - A+. Movement - A+. Bracelet - A+. Clasp - A++. Dial - F-. The no-date 3, 6, 9, 12 dial layout is my favourite design. It should be a no-brainer for me. With a more attractive font in white lume, this would already be in my collection.
@ugabrew
@ugabrew 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you 100%. Ditch the faux lume and the 3rd grade font (especially the number "1", which is too tall), and this would be near perfect. It's still a great deal for the specs and build quality, but the dial is too important to look like an afterthought, or more likely, an intentional downgrade to preserve the Explorer's standing.

It just would have also been nice to see something like a recreation of the silver oyster prince used in the expedition or something that would be more purpose built for modern explorers or something

I too would have liked to see something more like the original expedition watches. The first Ranger came years after. If this watch becomes a success it will be forever linked with BNGE 52/54 just as the Explorer is with Everest, though it too was a watch that didn't exist when Hillary and Tensing summited. Reservations aside my order is in. I like it.

Great review as always Bruce! Got " hands on" with this with my AD and had mixed emotions. If you were in the market for just one piece then this a solid choice. For me it was beautiful on wrist, but, didn't get the heart racing and yet at some point I think it could with it's adaptability.

I was in the dull camp . Tried on in AD love it . It’s beauty is almost in the dullness ..I’m on the next that arrives .it looks great as it is glad no applied or polishing . Can’t wait to get a few dings and scratches at play this is like fine wine and will improve by age ..

Just wish there was a bit more to the dial, it looks so sparse, even for a field/tool watch. In harkening the vintage vibes, this Ranger would have been immensely improved with the old rose logo and smile text without over-busying up the overall look. Still really like it nonetheless.

Thanks for the great images on that watch. As it comes to arc on the outside of the crystal, it scratches easily and would bother me even more. I have no problem reading my BB 58 in all situations till now, so I won’t miss it. I have a scratch in my Certina DS-1 crystals coating an that looks not to good.

I liked the watch first seen, and it still getting beter and beter! Materfact, I am going to purchase this watch end this year 😀 I do have for example a Rolex Day date, but it’s not save to have on your wrists these days. That’s what I like about Tudor…subtiel 👌 Enjoyed your review Aubrey (Canadian) from Netherlands 🇳🇱

Custom Ranger? Maybe Tudor had this in mind, ala Bremont military unit custom watches. Perhaps that is why that big blank area exists below the spindle! Good vid. Keep at it!

I was against getting this watch given the lack of applied markers and simple design, but the more I saw it in person and compared it other watches, the more it grew on me... until I bought one a week ago. I must say that it's a very nice watch and it's vintage simplicity is what makes it appealing to me.

Bruce did you find the clasp edges, and lug tips to be super sharp? I tried it on last weekend, and it was a great size on my 7.5” wrist, but the edges felt sharp. Bracelet also didn’t feel quite as solid as the Rolex on my wrist. Anyway, fun watch, good price point, I think it’ll sell good over time.

I love the fact it doesn’t have an AR coating so that it mimics an acrylic crystal like the vintage ones used to have. Only thing I don’t like is the size could be smaller and the crown should be like the black bay 54.

I got to handle it a couple of weeks ago and as much as I dislike Tudor I must admit that it was kinda impressive. The bracelet, case and clasp was very nice. The brushing seemed coarser than something like an Omega or a Rolex though, so I can't really say that the pricing is wrong. I love the fact that they didn't stick snowflake hands on the watch, the colour of the lume is nice as well, really well judged. But there is nothing that pops. The dial just falls flat for me. Then again, if it popped it would compete with the Explorer and since this is a Tudor that just cannot happen. I'd go for an Omega Railmaster instead. Almost as cheap and much more charming.

I really have zero clue why there is such vitriol online for this watch. It's a great release, but because a couple of hipsters online decided that it was too big and the 'lume color is ugly'.... you can't make this stuff up. But it has become a massive echo chamber. I really don't get it. When makers come out with somethine new, everyone hates it... and then complain about submarinar clones.

Hi Bruce, nice video of a watch that, like all Tudors, seems to polarise opinion. I was underwhelmed when I first saw it, but it is tough, versatile and has a great movement. I really need to see this in the metal before passing judgment. One of your posters commented on a blemish on the Ranger he bought. There have been too many examples of problems with early production Tudors: my suggestion is to let production settle down before purchasing. Hang on to your money until any quality issues have been dealt with.

100%. Really liking this after seeing video. For me this is a 39 version of a vintage Explorer. I'd like but wouldn't pay market for a 20yr old Explorer that wears a little to small but this is nearly perfect in my eyes. That said, a Tudor 36 wears larger than a Rolex 36 and I'd like to see this watch in 36. I believe we will. The Exp39 is a watch I love but style wise it is bordering on Datejust more than being a tool or field watch (white gold applied markers, polished surfaces). This is a tool watch. Going to try one on very soon.
